Project Sonic 2017 Announced for PS4, Xbox One, NX and PC

Sonic Mania wasn’t the only new Sonic game revealed at the 25th Anniversary Party. At the end of the stream, Takashi Iizuka revealed the debut trailer for Sonic Team’s next game. Like Sonic Generations, the game will feature both Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic. However, Iizuka stressed that this isn’t a sequel, so it’s not Generations 2.
It also appears that the game will have a dark and serious story line. If so, hopefully it won’t be as bad as the series’ previous attempts at having one of those. The game doesn’t have a name yet aside from a working title, Project Sonic 2017, but they did announce that it’ll be released on PS4, Xbox One, NX (!) and PC during Holiday 2017.

I always found it curious that people spout everywhere that Sonic can’t work with a dark and serious story, despite SatAM, Sonic Adventure 1 and ESPECIALLY the Archie comics proving that wrong. The stories of Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 06 for example didn’t suck because they were dark and serious. They sucked because they were convoluted and made no sense, explained things that didn’t need explaining, had everyone act out-of-character, and just generally got in the way of the game.
Instead of worrying about it being dark, you should worry about how competent whoever’s writing it is. If it’s Pontiac and Griff again, give it the benefit of the doubt, since their attempts at dark writing had hints in Lost World, and weren’t bad. If it’s Ian Flynn, you should be excited, not worried. If it’s Iizuka…well, I guess you have a reason to be afraid.

I’m not worried about it being dark, I’m worried about how Sonic Team usually handles dark story lines. I honestly wouldn’t mind a Sonic game having one if it was handled well, but I don’t trust Sonic Team to do that.

Hmm well sonic generations did involve time so maybe this is an alternate timeline where something happens to make them lose.

Are those modified Death Egg Robots? The models are almost identical, save for the glowing eyes…

I’m still confused as to why, this is getting out on a Nintendo console and not Sonic Mania. Oh well. I have a ps4 I can play it there.
And Screw sonic adventure 3 I want this!!

    “dark storyline”?
The trailer barely showed anything, and this really only looked serious at the beginning, until Classic Sonic came in.
I’m very sure that the tone will be something more akin to Sonic 3 or the Dreamcast titles. It’s been a very long time since a Sonic game had a scenario with Eggman actually being dangerous (like in the Mega drive and Dreamcast games), and after the cringeworthy “humourous” writing in Lost World and Colours, it’s time to change something.
And from a gameplay perspective, the trailer did hint at a very similar style of gameplay to Generations so that’s going to be fine anyway.
So pleeease, Classic Sonic Purists, don’t get silly and judge a game by Sonic making an angry face in the first few seconds of the trailer.
Also, am I really the only one who noticed that the destroyed city is basically the one from Adventure 2 (City Escape)?

So you’re ignoring the trailer literally saying “In the darkest of times”? :V
I didn’t like the writing in Lost World and Colours either, but it was still far less bad than when Sonic Team tries make Sonic dark and serious.

between 00:51 and 00:54 is obviously gameplay.

It’s not obvious. Most game trailers do that so you can know what to expect in the title. Look at the mortal kombat x, for example. Everything showcased, but the game didn’t look anything like that trailer.

Except not, since that’s still entirely pre-rendered.

Mixed feelings on this. I’m not at all against the darker storyline as I’ve long thought it’s something Sonic’s been overdue to try again and always knew it could pull off if done right…problem is that Sonic Team’s has had an iffy hit-and-miss record at pulling it off successfully.
But at the moment I care more about the fact that it’s coming to PC. Woohoo! Love for the PC users!

So they feel like the Classic Sonic thing can be milked a little more, ok. Then they get on with ignoring once again why Classic Sonic appeals to people, and present to us another game about dark times, clenched fists, everyemo needs a hero.
Then it’ll bomb because just stop trying the angst-fueled Sonic already, it’s not a thing, and they’ll be like “Oh, I guess people don’t really like Classic Sonic that much after all”.
Basically without Classic Sonic there getting everyone’s attention, all media would say is “They’re doing another angsty Sonic game.” So that’s all Classic is… good IP they’re dirtying up as usual to use as bait instead of making an actual good game.

So I guess you didn’t see the Sonic Mania trailer? :V

Nah yeah, looks great! Here I’m just bagging on what looks like deliberately milking Classic Sonic in a modern game for no reason at all… No reason, except that it’s the only thing that distracts attention away from Sonic 2017 looking like every other angsty 3D SOnic title.

Am I the only one who the ending of the trailer made them think of Sonic SatAM?

    • Reply

No, the same thought crossed my mind as well, which has made me wonder if Sonic Team’s drawn some inspiration from that for this…but it’s still too early to tell for 100% certain on that.
The thing I’m still trying to figure out about all of this is how Classic Sonic fits into all of this…the only thing I can think of to explain him is that time travel gets involved here…either that or he’s just THERE without explanation, sort of like the Wisps in Lost World.

Because chucking stuff in and hoping it works is how Sega makes money with Sonic.

That is my biggest fear about this game at the moment, yes.
But for now I’m in more of a “wait and see” mentality.

It’s look like will be a Sonic Chronicles sequel, remember how end this game?

    • Reply

I do severely doubt Chronicles is ever get any nods in main game canon beyond that one level appearing in one of the Mario & Sonic titles.

      • Reply

Well, Chronicles explain a lot of plot holes that Adventure and Battle have, such as the Pachacamac clan and the Gizoids; and (this is only a theory) probably Chronicles take place after Generations (or Lost World) because Tails doesn’t recognize Green Hill and in Chronicles do, and ever in Generations Rouge call Sonic ‘Big Blue” a nick that she use to call Sonic in Chronicles (Well, that’s even be a easter egg).
Ah! the dimensional rift will be a good explination for Classic Sonic, Blaze and Silver apparence because an anniversary without Silver this isn’t an anniversary lol.

I haven’t commented on this one yet, I really hope this isn’t another Generations like game and this time we actually have a decent plot and a gameplay other than 2D boost-to-win, but I know I’ll be wrong.

Has anyone claiming Unleashed/Colors/Generations are “boost to win” ever actually attempted to clear a level using nothing but boosting? :V
