Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice Announced

boomfireandice

So this is a surprise – SEGA have announced a new Sonic Boom title, named ‘Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice‘, coming exclusively to 3DS during ‘Holiday 2015’.

So far, details are pretty scarce but we can report that playable characters will include the main four and Sticks, with Eggman returning for villain duties alongside all-new bad guy, D-Fekt. Reportedly the game also features a new mode known as Bot Racing that will be tied to the single player campaign while featuring multiplayer elements. What this means is anyone’s guess at this point, but it will be focused on racing and speed (duh) where users unlock bots based on the characters.

Development duties are with Sanzaru Games by the look of the trailer, who were responsible for Shattered Crystal. Given the infamy of the previous two Sonic Boom-related titles, we’ll hold off on any excitement for now. You can check out the trailer for the game below.

To be fair Shattered Crystal wasn’t bad and this actually looks good

      I reviewed it and no.

          • “I’ll say this pizza is made out of cardboard because god forbid it isn’t and someone actually enjoys it”

          • No I mean it actually is incredibly hard for me to believe that someone would enjoy the full game. I could understand a game not being for me, but Shattered Crystal is just pretty much what you get in the demo repeated for five-six hours with little variation. I could understand enjoying the demo, as in that you don’t have to endure all of the repetition. But it’s as likely that someone would enjoy the full game as it would be for someone to enjoy Shadow the Hedgehog: not very.

It wasn’t AS bad as the Wii U one. This looks like they’re learning from their past mistake.

At this point I’m wondering what the thought process behind making this game is.
The Boom name has been muddled by both of the games released thus far (sure, Shattered Crystal was merely mediocre as opposed to the unmitigated disaster on Wii U, but still), so consumers likely won’t trust any new games under that title. Particularly when it looks almost identical to Shattered Crystal.
Are they trying to redeem the name somewhat? Because at this point, I think it’s a lost cause. Shame this new franchise has to get shot in the foot right out of the gate.

Memes aside, I’m gonna pass on this one.

lol, SEGA is really trying to kick a dead horse

It’s.. it’s literally a sequel-expansion of Shattered Crystal but with fire-ice gimmicks literal to the name and a playable Amy now.
I’m not sure what to think on this. Except “underwhelming.”

What’s more surprising to me is that the post announcing this on the Sega blog was written by RubyEclipse. No joke, that news is far more interesting to me than the game that was announced.

What’s funny is Aaron tweeting ‘And so it begins’ to announce the game on his personal account. Also the tag on the Sonic Tumblr account, ‘#it’ll be better than the last one’.

    Ugh. Not another Sonic Boom…

DEAR GOD WHY. We thought we were done with this, now we’re getting ANOTHER one? This has “sales filler” written all over it, no matter how much brand-damage it does.

Buying it day 1. Not sponsoring a giveaway this time, though.

    D-Fekt? More like D(a)-Fuck.
Welp, looking forward to see how this game will fail just like the last ones.

Great, because the last game was SO AWESOME, you know, excuse me if I’m not excited but out of the three Sonic games released for the 3DS “excluding spin offs like All-Stars Racing Transformed and Mario and Sonic London 2012 Olympics” they picked the one game I really didn’t give a shit about and made a sequel to it, I’d take a sequel to Sonic Generations even though I didn’t like it, and I may be the only one but I really liked Sonic Lost World for the 3DS, why not make a sequel to that? At least Amy is playable now, fuck that badger!

It looks better than the last one. Hopefully they are learned what went wrong.

Cool. The Unleashed/Generations branch of Sonic Team will have more time to make a good Sonic game for the 25 anniversary next year.

Well, it looks okay, but will it look better than the others do?

“What do you get when you mix fire with ice?”
Water…you probably get water, which is bad since Sonic still can’t swim…or maybe water vapour. Soooo, the developers failed miserably in chemistry class?
Jokes aside, the little they show in the trailer seems to add little to no new features to the gameplay. You can break or “create” new blocks with these fancy powers…which when it comes to gameplay is pretty much 100% the same as just breaking blocks normally or the blocks being there already, just makes all this look more fancy. So it’s prettys much just changing the appearance/looks for the same feature/gameplay element. Sooooooo, how is that supposed to thrill me exactly?

This IS a surprise. I really didn’t think Sega, if they were going to release any new Boom games at all, would do it so soon, much less without a complete change in approach, which as already noted, this game doesn’t really do.
That said, I am a BIT more impressed with the trailer for this than Shattered Crystal, which really was mediocre all the way through, and looks a bit more eye-grabbing, so there is SOME improvement. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be a successful game…in fact I’d be surprised if it was given how the previous two went…but the fact there’s improvement at all renews my faith in Sonic Boom as a gaming sub-franchise just a little.
Given how quick after the last one this one is being released, I suspect this was already in development before the release of the previous games, and Sega didn’t want all the time and effort getting this one this far to go to waste and so they saw it through.

I’m praying that this doesn’t suck as much…
It’d be awesome if we actually got a good Sonic Boom game…

In all honesty, I really don’t know why people are opposed to Sonic Boom in general. The failure of the previous games shouldn’t really mean anything since a lot of Sonic games in the past decade and a half have been really bad. Taking away the Boom aesthetic and designs won’t magically make Sonic good, especially if Sega does to whatever other dev the same thing they did to Big Red Button during Rise of Lyric’s development.

yeah this is totally Unexpected. If they release a demo and I like it I’ll get it.
