Sonic 2 Mobile Update, Transformed iOS Unveiled

Sonic 2 2013 CPZ

Sega announced today their Winter 2013 lineup features Sonic 2‘s mobile update and Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed for iOS. The two titles are joined by Rhythm Thief and the Paris Caper (which is fantastic and worth checking out if its 3DS counterpart indicates anything) and a new MOBA card game called Demon Tribe.

Sonic 2’s update brings the same enhancements that Sonic 1 received in the form of wide screen display, a smooth 60FPS gameplay, and a host of other enhancements such as high quality Mega Drive sounds, leaderboards and achievements. I’m sure most of you are wondering about the game’s two-player mode. While Sega’s said little about the title, title developer and connoisseur of vegemite Christian “Taxman” Whitehead offered a little tease.

“I’m pretty limited in what I can mention about Sonic 2 right now, but when the Press Release says that the game runs widescreen at 60fps, that applies to all aspects of the game… wink wink, nudge nudge,” Whitehead said.

The Transformed port for iOS will feature a refined World Tour mode to accentuate gaming on the go and also provides four-player local and online multiplayer.

Both titles are currently scheduled for release sometime next month. Grab some hot chocolate, a blanket, and your mobile device (these should undoubtedly make their way over to Android users too.) Sega is aiming to provide a comfy winter for mobile gamers. Let’s just hope Sonic 2 can make it in time for its Nov. 24th anniversary.

About time the iOS Transformed port is shown. I’ve been waiting for that one ever since its announcement just because of the fact that it was said to be a Free-to-play game.

Sonic 2 for Android, hell yeah! I wonder if Knuckles will be playable, I hope 2P VS mode has extra levels now that the water is no longer an issue due to using two devices for split screen!

All-Stars Racing Transformed for iOS? And we JUST got All-Stars Racing for Android, here we go again, 2 years of waiting for it to come to Android and we’ll end up with Sonic Dash or Sonic the Sketchhog!

Hmmm,I am giving my bets that Taxman “60FPS and Widescreen will touch every aspect of the game” hinting may be related to Special Stages… Those graphics animations aren’t that smooth at all, so I guess that it will be remade on some way or another instead of being ported directly.

Anyway, wish for these Sonic 1 and 2 remakes to come out on Steam, gotta brag with achievements after all!

I thought it might be referring to 2p mode.

Time Attack Single & Multiplayer Mode + Lost Levels,Multiplayer Score/Time Attack have to contain:
Wi-Fi connection (optional Bluetooth/Mobile Network),Knuckles/Amy/Metal Sonic as unlockable characters(including Super Forms of each characters) and of course Super Tails just like Super Sonic+Extras Menu like in Sonic CD (2011).

Oh boy, a Sonic 2 remake! I wonder how they’ll butcher this one? Terrible “remastered” music (Marble Zone, now with accordion and clap-track), broken sound effects (because who really wants a spindash that sounds like it’s gaining power?), rearranging the HUD (great, I always wanted to see the bottom left of the screen, it was worth sacrificing visibility of the sky!), score tallying long after the end-of-act jingle has ended and the pointless removal of features (CD let you toggle spindashes while letting you change soundtracks, where’s the option of having the good music back?) have already been done. Oh well, I’m still all in favour of the development of Sonic Genesis 2!
Oh wait, they screwed up the life icon. That’s a start!

      2/10, apply yourself.

Fun fact: the remastered music in the Sonic 1 remake doesn’t have any added instrumentation. It’s literally the music direct from the original game run through the synthesizer the YM2612 is based on. You’re just used to hearing the music in a shitty emulator.

And the life icon was moved to the top right so that it’s not being covered up by the touch controls (and your thumbs), which is fairly obvious if you think about it for about three seconds.

Point 1) Actually, I’m used to hearing the music through the YM2612 of my not-an-emulator Genesis. Also, if no instrumentation was added, explain the clap-track.

Point 2) …Which is made redundant if you happen to use a gamepad.

        1) An insignificant change. You can hear the notes that comprise it in the original track. The synthesizer was used to add a different drum sample to bring it out more. Honestly, I like it more since it brings out a little more variety in Marble Zone’s otherwise bland theme.

        2) You’re really going to complain about this on a mobile platform? I hope you at least are aware you’re in a vast minority. (That said, I can’t blame you for using a controller. Hate touch screens myself, but can’t be bothered to go bluetooth up a controller to my Nexus 7.)

There is one minor difference in Marble Zone – what sounds like a hihat in addition to the drum kicks in the last section before it loops. There is no “clap track” and certainly no “accordion”, and it would take someone hella familiar with the original song to know there was any change at all. This is making mountains out of molehills in a way only Sonic Retro commenters can.
