Sonic 1 Remastered Releases Later This Month, First Gameplay Footage

Android Police reports that Taxman and Stealth’s remastering of Sonic the Hedgehog will be released on Android and presumably iOS as well later this month for $2.99. Those who have already bought Sonic 1 on iOS will get this release as a free update. The site also released some gameplay footage of the Android version, which confirms that this is indeed Sonic 1 in widescreen running nice and smooth.

Also it has shows that Sonic can indeed use the spindash in this new version. The music isn’t present in this video, presumably because they aren’t done making the tracks sound nicer yet. The menu isn’t present either, as they probably aren’t allowed to share the neat new features. Also no zone title cards for some reason.

    No PC?

No platforms besides iOS and Android have been announced so far. I’d expect it to at least come to consoles and possibly PC as well though.

Sonic definitely looks more fluid here. I like what I see!

“Also no zone title cards yet for some reason.” If you notice, each level starts on the 0:02 mark, meaning they are skipping it.

The wrecking ball boss seems to move faster and longer distance because of the wide screen, and the ball spins near the end, interesting…

I hope to comes to PSN or Steam!

I really hope this comes to PSN. I can’t stand these sluggish Backbone ports!

Gotta love that wrecking ball. It rotates. everything makes sense now.

And moreover, the wrecking ball’s emulated 3D color depth switching frame scheme seems to have been replaced with a single frame image. It is much less wearing on the eyes!

      …just keep in mind you’re watching a 30fps video, not 60fps gameplay.

I hope they apply the “update” to the Live/PSN version.

I’ve noticed three things that I’m not sure if two of them already exist in Sonic 1 or not.

    1. Lives counter is in upper right.
    2. New bobbing baby blue flower in GHZ? Looks like something out of Sonic CD.
    3. The ball on the boss fight rotates as it swings now. Did it do that before?

What? This flower has always been there.

And hopefully Windows Phone support will follow too!

so it’s an update on the IOS? YES!! I DON’T HATE TO PAY!

Seems the levels were slightly changed!
First boss has the platforms moved wider apart to help have them against the walls as they are in the original.
Also the trees and flowers surrounding the capsule at the end are all in different positions.
(Compare with original game if you want to see difference)

Nice. I’m satisfied with the original in just about every way, but there’s no harm in recreating it.

Like how in Act 1 the bottom of the screen could keep up with Sonic. Of course Act 2 & 3 shows a few hiccups, but it’s an early build. Also, is it just me, or are the colors off?

Yarr! Now I want Tails as playable character, level select and various extras and overall MORE LEVELS! I hope Sega won’t make the same error of Sonic Cd!

It’s almost next month and still no release. So much for “Later this month”.

Not exactly surprising since SoA itself has been rather quiet on it. The only news from them has been a delay on PSO2.
