PSA: All Stars Racing Transformed Has Game-Ending Bug

What can you say about launch day games? They’re usually the sloppiest, trashiest bits of data to hit a system if they’re not from a first party developer. It’s unfortunate that this is so with All-Stars Racing Transformed on Wii U. It seems a bug has been reported that essentially makes the game unplayable.

Those starting off the tour mode in single player find themselves at an impasse on the first boost challenge stage when the checkpoints you must pass through to extend time fail to load, essentially making the level on all difficulties unbeatable. There’s no getting around the stage either, leaving Wii U owners high and dry on the game.

This seems to affect all Wii U consoles that downloaded the update patch for the game upon boot up. Deleting the update data causes the system to redownload it upon booting up the game, and taking it offline will cause the system to complain at you to get an Internet connection to play the game.

If you’re deciding still which version to get, we highly advise staying away from the Wii U port until further notice.  Hopefully Sumo Digital and Sega are on top of this and working up another patch, but such a gross oversight on a release game is reprehensible and lazy. Come on, Sega, this isn’t 2006 anymore.

Maybe that’s why GameStop didn’t have it in stock when I went to pick up mine today. Hopefully they fix it.

They’re even bigger idiots than Ash Ketchum.

So I know this is Sega and all but how come they didn’t notice this game breaking glitch? :V Surely they tested the game before releasing it. x.X Since I don’t currently have a Wii-U I don’t have to worry about this. Though I will be getting the game for the 360 of course, once I get paid again. 😛

I read something that said the game will let you skip the challenge if you fail it on the easiest difficulty a few times.

Still a bad glitch that needs fixing though.

Yep, this is the only way around it. You have to do this for every boost challenge stage.

They probably didn’t catch it because it only occurs POST update. I didn’t update before playing and passed it no prob.

Well I will say this much: at least Sonic didn’t have to choose between 7 girls fighting over who will marry him (TENCHI REFERENCE).

Sorry to hear that Gene, you were originally aiming for the PS3 version but ended up getting it for Wii U, you should have known never to get a console on day release!

Bummer. No wonder the second boost challenge is so hard, there’s no checkpoints. I managed to complete the first one before I updated.

Sucks. Oh well. Guess I’ll stick to New Super Mario Bros U till it’s fixed.

Theres some weird issues going on with a number of Wii U titles honestly. Epic Mickey 2 has horrendous slowdown, Mass Effect 3 has less detail and a few hitches here and there, and games seemingly take longer to load on Wii U than it probably should. Wish there was an explanation that this piece of hardware that is more powerful than the current consoles is somehow struggling to handle these ports. Then again, they probably had like 4 months tops to work on them.

That’s just harsh, that last point. I’m pretty sure some of them got an SDK sometime before or after the 2011 announcement.
Then again, that’s what happens with launch day and launch titles…

From what I heard, the CPU is worse than the PS3 (I’m not sure about the scale though).

    It’s purely unforgivable.
Even with a patch, it means the disc itself is f*cked up and nobody at Sumo/Sega took the time to test it.

Videogame industry became an awful piece of shit during last decade. Now you sell crap and sometimes, a few days later, you repair it with f***** patch/DLC if people are angry. After that when your disk drive die, you lose your patch with it and stay with your broken game – can put it in the a** if you want.

Bring back offline consoles and polished, autonomous completed games.

Online patches aren’t the problem, nor is it Sega/Sumo’s fault. As stated above, the problem only occurred after the release day update made by nintendo behind the backs of the game devs.

Also, the fix isn’t make it offline, its better communications between devs. Need I remind you of the game breaking bug in Super Paper Mario and the 10s of 100s of glitches in Super Mario 64 DS?

The bug is *not* in the Day 1 Wii U system update, it’s in the Day 1 ASRT update. There’s another bug/”feature” where deleting the ASRT update prevents you from playing the game entirely unless you redownload it, making it impossible to roll back the update.

Toot: Patches are a double-edged sword. Nintendo’s prior stance on “NO PATCHES” was supposedly to force developers to get the games right the first time, but we ended up with silly game-breaking glitches like in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Nintendo ended up “patching” Skyward Sword by releasing a channel that fixes save files affected by the bug. (Note that if you use this channel to fix the save file, the file becomes “owned” by the channel, so deleting the channel deletes the save!)

Gah stupid update the game wasn’t broken there’s something about the update that did it.

So I’ve been playing a little more. The Golden Axe Boost Challenge still works but every other one in the Career mode is completely broken. It’s like it loads the Boost Race map instead of the Boost Challenge map.

And I don’t think it was the Wii U day one patch that busted this, it was the SASRT day one patch. I did the first boost challenge before the patch downloaded/installed and it worked without a hitch. Only after taking the day one SASRT patch did it all break.

Game breaking bugs aside, game is incredibly enjoyable.

Any news about them fixing it yet? I heard they’re working on it, but does anyone know when another patch will be released?

Steve has reported that they are working on a fix as of today. When the patch will be released is not known currently. They’re also keeping a close eye to anything else in the game that may potentially break, so if you spot anything else, I highly recommend reporting it into the game’s main topic on the forums.
