Bayonetta 2 Coming Exclusively to Wii U

Nintendo announced at their press conference earlier today that Bayonetta 2 will be coming exclusively for the Wii U. Surprisingly the game will not be published by SEGA, but by Nintendo. SEGA will instead act as an advisor on the project. It’s also the company that owns the franchise, so it’s a bit hard to not put their logo on the game.

The director of the first game, Hideki Kamiya, will only be a supervisor for this sequel. This is because he is already busy directing another upcoming game by Platinum published by Nintendo, The Wonderful 101. Instead, the game will be directed by Yusuke Hashimoto, who was the producer of the original Bayonetta.

Wait…what? Why is Nintendo publishing? Why is it Wii-U exclusive? Well that’s lame….I…I have so many questions but it would take too much effort. Imma go lay down

The most likely reason is that Nintendo wanted a sequel but Sega did not. It’s similar to how Mega Man 6 was published by Nintendo in North America.

Your second question answered the third one.

I think it might be to do with the developers liking the system…or just the fact that the new generation consoles from the other two haven’t even been revealed yet. Even though they could work on the PS3/360 as it is, it’s probably just the decision that Platinum Games made in the end.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Sega isn’t publishing this. Remember back in March, Sega announced that, due to financial issues, they would only be concentrating on four series: Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager, Total War, and Aliens. Bayonetta isn’t one of them.

Incidentally, if you check out the Wii U launch window lineup, you’ll notice that there’s several third-party titles being published by Nintendo, including Sing Party (FreeStyleGames), Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge (Team Ninja), and Lego City Undercover (Traveller’s Tales). I don’t recall Nintendo publishing third-party titles previously other than the M&S series in Japan.

I hope this doesn’t affect the games charm having all the obscure classic SEGA references.

It wasn’t just classic stuff. That game was chock full of references.

I’d say it’s an opportunity to stuff Bayonetta 2 with tons of Nintendo referances instead.
