Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Gameplay Trailer Now Online

Look, screenshots are all well and nice. Certainly better than an endless stream of concept art that doesn’t clue us in to what the final product will actually look like. But ever since Sega revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 was being developed, there has been one main request: to see how it looks in motion.

Well, just as was foretold, today Gamespot.com officially unveiled the first gameplay trailer to Sonic 4: Episode 2. How does it look? Well, judge for yourself.

That is certainly more than three seconds of gameplay footage!

So from what can be seen, the main focus of this trailer is on what is presumably the first two levels in the game, revealed by Famitsu to be called Sylvania Castle (the Aquatic Ruin/Marble Garden Hybrid) and White Park (the carnival snow wonderland) in all its glory. We get to see the avalanche in motion. We can finally see just what the heck that Sonic/”Tails” move is all about (oh, it breaks walls. Hopefully that translates into alternate paths). We even get to see Sonic’s new running animation full on, which certainly does look better than what we got in Episode 1.

The trailer also makes a very big point on showing us that, yes, Sonic now stays curled up in a ball when he is launched off a slope. Don’t know if any of you remember that, but it was a point of contention for some people in the last episode. But now Sonic can careen into the unknown without worry or fear, able to bounce on enemies instead of just smacking into them and dying. Also sneaking its way into Episode 2 are the warning signs from Sonic Generations, signalling the arrival of a bottomless pit. Let’s just hope half of each level is covered in them!

Of course, there can always be room for complaint depending on how specific you want to get. The homing attack is still there (though to be honest, no one should be surprised by that), Sonic still curls up immediately when hitting a boost panel, and the whole “run through walls real fast” feature from Rush is present. But on the whole, it definitely looks to be a step in the right direction from the game’s last outing. Of course, now that we’ve seen it in motion, the next step is to play it. Then we can get super excited, instead of just normal excited.

Well, there is a Homing Attack, so that’s got to piss off a lot of people. I could really care less about the Homing Attack, but the physics seem good enough. My main disappointment is that I didn’t get to see the industrial level (the one with all the oil pumps). But it seems pretty good right now.

least they stopped using nolstagic levels and are using fresh new themes…kinda. now the question is weather they kept the physics, improved them alot or alittle, or are using the classic sonic physics from sonic generations.

Well, the run animation looks a lot better- pity they can’t just use classic Sonic seeing as these are pretty much re-imaginings of the old games. On the whole it’s an improvement- at least in visuals- but everything about episode 1 was terrible so I’ll need to play the demo first.

Homing attack still sucks balls though. Always has. Always will.

I loved the first one, and with the improvements I’m bound to love this one even more.

I wonder how it would make sonic and tails faster while they are 69ing šŸ˜€

Dammit!! I wish this was for the Wii! Its not fair that we’re the only ones that will be stuck with only Ep.1! šŸ™

None of the zones seems to match with the escarabesque and sandworm badnicks, so I suppose we are still missing to see some sort of desert level?

Thank god Sega are being direct with the reveals this time instead of teasing us with next to nothing.
Maybe there’s something we’ve not seen yet, but there’s a fair few different kinds of stages going on, and it looks good!

Maybe they weren’t showing off Episode 1 so much, because they were ashamed of it even?

Looks like a blend of Generations Classic Sonic and Sonic Rush. I like it :]

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the music in the background sounds a lot like a re-mix of the menu music from S&SASR.

it looks pretty good, but i was hoping the homing attack would be more like the one in megamix.

The physics look to be marginally improved, especially the rolling off ramps and the bumper physics, but I noticed a few niggles here and there. But definitely looks better. I wish they would change that weird homing attack sound. I preferred the Sonic Adventure games’ ‘Hoff’ thing.

Interesting thing to note, the music was a remix of the menu from Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing. Interesting Choice.

A very cleverly edited trailer if you ask me. A lot of the footage seems to be consisted of scripted events so there’s no real indication as to how the new physics work. Still looks way better than Episode 1 though, and it’s damn gorgeous to look at.

  • Reply

it doesn’t seem to improve the physics as I expected, and why didn’t they show the important parts like getting stuck on walls or rolling downhill?

  • Reply

Looks good! I will definitely pick this one up! (I’m never going to get Sonic 4 Ep. 1)

That’s not bad, I was hoping for at least 15 seconds of gameplay. Good to know I was proved wrong in a GOOD way. Well uncurling is taken care of. Looks liken the game just might be even faster than Ep. 1. Homing Attack is still there but of course it would be. Final Result: I Like it!

I just saw the ‘death below’ sign form Generations. Interesting…

BTW, I bet you can turn them off.

Why is the music in the trailer from Sega All Stars Racing?

  • Reply

Well, the music sounds a hell of a lot better, and the physics seem to be slightly improved, though it’s difficult to tell for the most part. We’ll have to see a bit more gameplay to tell, but this may actually be decent.

There will be a PC version, right? No game is worth anything to me anymore unless it comes to PC.

Well, I personally can’t find too much to complain about at this point. Yeah, homing attack’s there, but no surprise, so not really got a gripe about it. Honestly, never really had a problem with it per say, just how it was used in episode 1. Beyond that, this just feels…right, to me, or at least pointing in precisely the right direction. Seems clear now, too, that Sega has definitely learned from their outing with Classic Sonic in Sonic Generations, as it has a faint Generations feel to it, in a very, very, good way. šŸ˜€

Why are people complaining about the homing attack? It’s put in a lot of fan made games and no one complains, but when SEGA does it, it’s a problem? I love the homing attack, I just don’t want to feel like i HAVE to use it to get through every stage.

Still a lot of bumpers and boosters.

I’m loving what I’m seeing so far. But part of me is disappointed that Sega couldn’t get it right first time round with Episode 1. If the next episode marks yet another departure, how will Sonic 4 be perceived as a whole in years to come?

  • Reply

My consensus: The major issues that brought down Episode 1 have, for the most part, been fixed. Visuals look heckuva lot nicer, uncurling has been removed, slope physics look like they work a bit better…my only complaint is that the jump physics still seem kinda floaty, like in Episode 1. Here’s hoping jumping is improved to at least resemble Classic Sonic’s jump in Generations…

Haven’t played many of the fan made games- but unless it’s a power up or in the not very good 3D Sonic games, the homing attack should get cut- just over simplifies an already simple game. Why bother building up speed and aiming for enemies when you can let the game do if for you?
Ah well, as with every other Sonic game I’ve ever played I’ll give it a chance- but 10 years of disappointment does tend to leave a mark!

@MetaruSonikku Sometimes I wonder if i’m the only one that doesn’t like homing attacks even on fan games like megamix. Like many already said, is a cheap skill and uneeded on 2D Sonic games. I would rather prefer the Insta-shield, which is simpler but powerfull with good timing.

@Topic says almost everything I would say. So, we still need to see if ALL physics are right, less bottomless pits, less “hold right to win” (Hey! Running and breaking walls is Knuckles work!), soundtrack, paths variety, fun gameplay…
… Umm, okay, i’ll be quiet.

If they delay it for PC, then they’ll probably release it on Steam two years later like with Ep 1. This trailer is amazing and I just can’t wait to play the game. I hope the music is just for the trailer and not for the game because electric guitar does NOT give a nostalgia feel…Ā

Forgot to comment: I wonder if we will be able to fully switch controls with Sonic and Tails. There’s an interesting shot after 00:49. Tails seems to be more essential than ever now. Hope he’s less disasterous too. lol
And Metal Sonic? No one excited? :V
    … Generations…

This made my day. Now, if we could get a good glimpse of the soundtrack of Episode 2. I mean Episode 1’s composition was fairly good but the instruments sounded just atrocious on so many levels. Still, regardless of how the soundtrack turns out, I am still looking forward to this awesome installment in the Sonic 4 saga.

around 20 seconds 2d to 3d like sonic generations 3ds

@MetaruSonikku: i see no homing attack chains, so it looks to be optional

DAMMIT, there’s the homing attack. Sonova…

…well, ok, to be fair, it looks like it’s downplayed a lot this time, but that accursed move got me killed a LOT in Episode 1 thanks to that little air boost that goes off when you’re making quick successive jumps while not locked on to anything. And what’s with Sonic breaking through stone walls with his head? Shouldn’t that hurt?

Fortunately there’s a substantial list of good things on display too: minibosses, new moves, combination moves, and other little things. These are fantastic features to see, but they all hinge on whether Sega can get the basics right this time. I’m tired of seeing Sonic games presenting creative and unique features as part of a fractured and unpolished gameplay system.

I guess I’m gonna have to buy it after all since it at least looks good enough. I just wish it was safe for me to get excited about it; I won’t feel that way until I see that I can build up insane speed by curling up and rolling down a slope.

For the peopleĀ that’sĀ complaining about the homing attack….QUIT IT! lol….he had in Sonic 3D blast and afterwards..why does it matter now??..geesh fanboys ask for so much…as for myself,iĀ DEFINITELYĀ loved the trailer and look forward to getting this!

What new physics engine? Sonic was running downhill without gaining more speed!

Well, but better not complaining before knowing for sure.

wow it says comming this spring so we should expect it sometime this fall like the first episode stated.
it looks promising but im not sure i like the like someone else said it already the 69ing move not sure how that will make you go faster but i gotta love the tails swiming for you underwater that is a nice new thought anyway.

To be fair, I was going to curl up after a booster anyway. Now I have computers to do it for me.

    That’s the future, baby!

Looks like they haven’t fixed the mixed up spin dash sfx still.

I’m really glad Tails is in, because in the more recent games they’ve had nothing but Sonic game-play.

  • Reply

According to a member of SEGA pr, we can’t play as Tails in single player mode.

    And there goes the hype.

My only niggle with Episode I was how short it was. Ā Other than that, the physics were never really much of an issue for me (although uncurling after launching up a slope was a bit odd), and the soundtrack was nice and the graphics were okay. Ā Episode 1 wasn’t terrible, but let’s hope that Episode 2 can improve and be greater for it.

  • Reply

Actually, I had one other niggle: It was a bit overpriced at $15 bucks. Ā It was kind of a hard sell to me at least.

looks like they couldn’t get rid of the looping music after all

@SkySlider… I was HOPING that the insta-shield would be in Generations. I love that thing so much. I was kind of addicted to it. But at the same time, in the hands of the wrong person (like me), it’s over-powered. But I still like the homing attack. I always hated missing a jump and having to start the whole level over again.

@sonicplayer… that would be a great improvement over Sonic 4: Episode 1

Also, I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed this, but when Tails spins, his tails stay behind him, and don’t spin with him. It looks kindaĀ ridiculous.

  • Reply

@MetaruSonikku The insta-shield was in sonic generations only it was a skill and was called twin-spin instead. I prefer the name insta-shield because it sounds cooler.

…uh… Sonic 3D Blast wasn’t a good game though. >>; It was awkward at best. Even after removing the Flickies via ROM hack, it’s mostly a curiosity in Sonic’s history, and in retrospect a warning of the disasters that would follow.

  • Reply

If their going through this game to work it definety, needs to take out the jump problem we was gettin’ use to. Plus its needs to change about the booster to get across slopes. Sonic does not nor needs boosters to get across slopes. Mostly they need to think about the classic elements in Sonic 1 to Sonic and Knuckles like put back them I’d see the Elecric sheld in Sonic Riders: Shooting Star Story. But come on make a good story!
