Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition Announced – Europe, Australia Exacts Its Revenge On America

This announcement isn’t exactly out of the blue, what with the rumors of a collector’s edition for Sonic Generations floating out there for quite a while. There have been listings in various gaming retailers, but some thought it might be nothing more than the Casino Night DLC packaged from the get-go. For those who were fearing the worst, they have been more than pleasantly surprised to find that isn’t the case at all. Not since Sonic Adventure 2 has a Sonic the Hedgehog title received the royal treatment, and as many consider this game a return to form, can we blame Sega for being excited and doing this? Not at all!

You do have what everyone expected there to be – a code to redeem the downloadable content for free. But the other content that’s hiding out in that oversized box adorned with the two Sonic’s…that’s where things get intense. Hiding out are a pieces of physical swag that will surely start adorning the desks and shelves of many a Sonic fan, the most prominent of those being a statue with both Classic and Modern Sonic, fingers ready to waggle if they were more than a statue. There is also a commemorative numbered “Gold Ring,” which hopefully doesn’t disappear the moment you touch it.

The content you can’t see in the display picture is what should interest you the most, however. We do get yet another “Best Of” music CD that will surely cover the 20 years of Sonic music the only way a single CD can. The second disc looks to be far more interesting: a never-before-seen documentary on DVD called History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon. With interviews from who knows how many people, it will hopefully tell the story of Sonic in a way not even the GameTap documentary could successfully accomplish. The details haven’t been revealed, but it’s something to look out for.

But the cream of the crop? It has to be a mysterious “20 Years of Sonic Art” book said to contain designs and sketches from the last 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog, including those never before seen. Could we finally be getting concept art for “Tails” and Knuckles? Or maybe even seeing more from the hand of Ohshima connected to the first game? We won’t know until November, but let your imagination run wild.

Of course, if you’re an American reader, you’re going to have to just sit and be jealous, as right now it’s only showing up in Europe and Australia. So if you want to get that deluxe package, you may be forced to import and deal with PAL. Maybe something else will show up in the United States? Well, that’s what I’ll tell myself as I cry myself to sleep thinking about that artbook…

Dude, you can buy it on Amazon.du now.

It cost me $133.00 US Dollars.

I’ll be posting download links for the soundtrack and Sonic Documentary, and the initial unboxing here:

Stay tuned, and good luck in getting one before they all sell out!! ;D

God dammit SEGA. First the record with Dreamcast Collection and now this. I WANT THIS SO BAD (and that record of course)

YES!! After all this time of ‘Good Things’ being something that happens overseas FINALLY Europe gets something this epic!! This is MINE!!

My favorite has to be that gold ring. I imagine it looking absolutely spectacular in person. so long as its as shiny as the picture says it is, and made of metal. Not some cheap plastic thing. The statues look awesome too!!

    • Reply

      I love the ring too!
And it’s metallic. A gorgeous, metallic ring replica.

It’s funny ’cause my brother is getting the Uncharted 3 Collectors Edition for Christmas and it comes with a ring as well!

I wonder if you can wear it on your finger… If that’s the case, I’ll probably use it to propose to someone special! ;D

      • Reply

I thought of the same idea 😛
But I think it looks a little big for the finger, pus I’ll be keeping it in the little box to keep it shiny.

Quote from friend: ‘I will use it as a Pe**s ring.’

PS3 is region free, you guys can just import it like we do with all the cool american exclusive stuff! 😛

REALLY wish it was in the US… ):

I will be happy only with a official PC version confirmation QQ

As an American user, I am greatly jealous.  I might just try to import the ps3 copy.

  • Reply

    No, I don’t want this.

    I NEED THIS.

  • Reply

I like this! Hopefully it will come out here… If not, IMPORT!

This is straight bullshit. It always seems that one country’s getting something another isn’t. Quit being lazy, fuckin’ gaming industry.

    • Reply

You’re just saying that because the first time in your life, Australia and Europe got the upper hand. 😉

      • Reply

It could of been Antarctica for all I care. Did you see all the stuff Japan got with the Collector’s Edition of Resident Evil 5 as opposed to America?

        • Reply

Did you see the “Collector’s Edition” of Resident Evil 5 that Europe got?  It was in a STEELBOOK.  Big whoop.

      • Reply

Notice he said “Always”. As in, it’s a criticism against Europe and Australia not getting stuff, too.

          and anybody else applicable.

Not missing out on this! If you live in the UK, I will give you 200 bucks if you buy an extra copy of that Collector’s Edition. I’m not even close to joking about this. I will do it. I missed out on the SA2 Collector’s Edition and I’m not going to miss out on this! If anything pops up in the future that says we Americans are getting something just as good (which I assume will be jack-squat), then I will reconsider. I am hell-bent on getting this only because of that statue! I. WANT! D:

You know when they put THAT much work into a Special Edition they think they must have made a good game or something.

Yes, and i hope it will be for pre order soon…

PCDVD (Steam Activated key) Collectors edition, please Q.Q

I heard that there might be troubles getting the free DLC to work on a PS3 in the US if imported, but can’t you just create a UK account on PSN and use it that way?  I remember I did that for the Heavy Rain Demo when it was released a few days before the US got it.

  • Reply

The title makes it look like it’s coming to America only. Way to bring my hopes down. Again.

    • Reply

How did you manage to think it was coming to America?

  • Reply

Why SEGA…how could you just betray the American market like that…
Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a grown man, and I’m about to cry.

    • Reply

Because Australia and Europe almost never have gotten anything of the sort.

      • Reply

Y’all didn’t get any of the SA2 special stuff? Well, I don’t think that’s right. That’s no reason to deliberately LEAVE OUT the U.S. for this one though. What did we ever do to SEGA?

        • Reply

I guess I wasn’t around when some of these things happened (I wasn’t as competent at gaming and didn’t follow it as closely, we only had dial-up back then and even in those promoted on TV I didn’t get them)
I did say ALMOST never, it’s obvious that I’ve missed stuff in promotions.
And the US have possibly done to SEGA what scrubs of Shoryuken are trying to do to Capcom AS WE SPEAK (WE WANT CHANGE or something of the sort. In this case the scrubs all want a Yun serious nerf in SSFIVAE). Which isn’t a good sign.

    • Reply

Because Sonic sells best in Europe.

      • Reply

That…is undeniably true. I wish I could say Sonic also sells well in the U.S., but I can’t because…he doesn’t. Stupid COD and Halo fanboys…

        • Reply

Not even them. The brand in general has just fallen out of favor due to continual screw ups on Sega’s part and the brand falling out of touch.

        • Reply

I hate to say it, but you’re right. Platformers are a dying breed nowadays. Who still platforms? Mario, and that’s about it. Sure we have R&C or even Jak or Sly Cooper, but nobody likes platformers anymore outside of a few selective groups including us. People just want to shoot stuff nowadays.

anyone have any tips for importing for americans?

      • Reply

Keep an eye out at major British game retailers’ websites. Most of them allow for International shipping. However, understand that a weak U.S. Dollar to a strong Pound Sterling will mean the product will be quite expensive, not including British VAT, shipping, and any duties added by the U.S.
This will easily be over $100 to import, possibly as high as $150-$200. People considering importing should strongly consider if the money dropped on the game for all of this can be justified.

Everyones worried about the States, but what about Canada! We don’t even get anything if we preorder…

    • Reply

Are you serious? I assumed we’d be getting the DLC if we pre-ordered… We got the Sonic hats here last year…

      • Reply

If you go to Gamestop.ca it says nothing about a preorder bonus. Shadzter from TSS checked something for me and concluded that Canada gets zip. That’s why I’m waiting to preorder and if nothing good comes 2 weeks to release I’m preordering.
I think the hats are all we’re gonna get.

This is SEGA’s revenge for all those years that Sonic Retro dissed them. And the wound is deep.

    XD

    • Reply

Not really as quite a bit of Retro is still looking to pick one of these up. All it does is make it a little more expensive.

  • Reply

Wow, Sega of Japan being in charge, they really fuckin hate us Americans so badly. Why, is it because Sonic was so popular in America than the rest?

UGH you take away our canon, now you’re trying to take away our fandom.. assholes..

    • Reply

Please don’t make me hit you upside the head. The whole canon thing was fixed ages ago. Seriously, anymore complaining about that and I’m just flat out deleting it. Some reading comprehension, please!

I don’t usually spend my money on Special Editions, in fact I avoid them as I see them as a waste of money.

      Hello there Fry.

  • Reply

    I will actually purchase this;
There is a Region All version of the disk, keep that in mind.

The Region All version of what I now have named Sonic Adventure 07: The Hedgehog’s Generations is compatible with Region 01, 02, and 03 consoles. 🙂

  • Reply

I can understand this considering Sonic has always been more popular in the UK than he was in the US, at the time the SMS beat the NES in Britain!

  • Reply

EU/AUS = DLC, Statue, Ring, Documentary, Art Assets, Music

    US = Sonic Hat

    • Reply

Actually… Australians can get the hat too…

  • Reply

What about a PC version? 🙁

  • Reply

    Curse you, Europe & Australia

  • Reply

I’m considering this as our revenge for Popful Mail

    • Reply

Popful Mail what now? Didn’t SEGA decide themselves that replacing the cast from the series with Sonic characters was a bad idea, even without fan backlash?

  • Reply

Actually, that art book is already avaliable in various shops and stores, atleast around here in my part of the UK anyway 🙂 It came with a massive poster featuring Sonic’s artwork from each of his games, some classic era stickers, and four badges 😀

    • Reply

Sounds cool. Any specific stores for our U.K. friends looking to pick one up?

    • Reply

…are you sure you’re not just talking about that Games Master magazine about the history of Sonic? If that’s what you’re talking about, I’m pretty sure that is something completely different than what is in the Generations Collector’s Edition.

  • Reply

Any word on the game being region locked at all?

    • Reply

PS3 isn’t, which partly why the American complaining about this isn’t really justified, especially when we get rarities so little compared to the USA. PS3 will work out of the box on any US system, no modding required.

360 MIGHT, it depends on whether or not the region coding is enforced. That decision is up to Sega.

      • Reply

Well, I can only hope I suppose.

Hey. EBGames now has the limited and the collectors edition on there site.

    Prices.

    99.95 – Normal Edition
109.95 – Limited Edition (Has sterioscopic case, or something like that, plus the DLC code for Casino Night.)

Collectors Edition – 169.95. (Contains the above.)

Geez its expensive but its going to be so worth it.

    • Reply

Sounds like a waste of money to me.
      ………………
      *preorders*

  • Reply

    *Sighs*

Once again over seas get all the goods… Not all of us have nearly $200 to fork out over imports… Which is what these are priced at, buy it at one certain foreign site, pay around $170, buy at a second site, pay around $140… Considering we have a SEGA corporation situated here in America, why can’t they bring this product to the USA instead of once again only giving over seas the good stuff…?

I mean… All we get is a sucky pinball download for cheap pre-order…? Really…? Without America you would only have half of your gains SEGA… Meaning you would have gone out of business long ago more than likely… How about paying us back too for a change…?

    • Reply

So what other “goods” did we get here overseas, exactly?

And America chose Nintendo over Sega; it was the Europeans who really dug Sonic way back when.

  • Reply

And what’s with the limited quantity crap…? A 20th anniversary and you can’t fork out enough Special Editions for all the 20 year followers to get? Your starting to fall low of expectations again…

…it’s been this way for a LOT of important celebrations…

I don’t even own a next gen console and I’ve pre-ordered this already. I’m not missing out on it.

    must have. NOW!!

  • Reply

Ok people are telling me that th PS3 is “region free”. I Live in the US and since the PS3 is “region Free” will I be able to get this at a local Gamestop or Best Buy?

    • Reply

You’ll need to import it from Europe or Australia. Region free only means your system will be able to play it. If it was region locked, anything not designated in the U.S. cannot be played on there, so like Japanese games on a U.S. Nintendo 3DS.

      • Reply

Thanks for replying. guess i’ll have to get ready to buy them on Amazon or bid high on Ebay.

  • Reply

I went to Gamestop earlier today and it said that the 3DS version would be set back to January. Probably a mistake or the guy was screwing with me. Cuz why would the game celebrating the 20th anniversary be released in Sonic’s 21st year? It definetly a mistake. Somebody find out more info! THIS MAKES NO SENSE!

    • Reply

Very likely a screw up on their part.

  • Reply

stop complaining, order it on eBay, jeez us australians never got Mortal Kombat 9 AT ALL so get over it 🙂

  • Reply

    lol

Just bought it. Having it imported from Germany!!

    • Reply

I’ll be uploading everything that comes with it!!

Once I upload them, how do I post them on Sonic Retro?

      • Reply

Just link to them in the comments section of whatever the most recent Generations article is at the time. I’ll be more than happy to give it a little publicity.

  • Reply

Can someone give me a link to a website i can buy this and import it to the US?

  • Reply

I jus pre-orderd my copy, it cost AU $168, it’s one expensive collectors edition.

    (totally worth it though)

  • Reply

What’s that box with classic and modern on it?

  • Reply

The way they look each other on the box (the two Sonics , that is) , reminds the title “Sonic rivals” ! They look like they are about to fight … I think the designers should had avoided that .

  • Reply

I just want that Classic Sonic figure.

    …And the CDs…..

    …and the boxes…

    …along with the game….

    …I also want the ring…

…Sega, take Modern Sonic out of the collector’s edition and send it to me pls

  • Reply

I’m concerned weither this game is even worth getting anymore, judging by how SEGA is this game will most likely be medicore or even worse, a flop.

Everytime they announce a sonic game they have always abused us, the fans by giving us high hopes and in the end the game always ends up being crappy.

I think I am going to cancel my order, I’m tired of SEGA letting us down all the time

    • Reply

You could always rent it to give it a go. No one’s really forcing you to buy it.
