Generations 3DS Brings Mushroom Hill, Reminder It Still Exists

With all the hullabaloo about Chemical Plant, Seaside Hill, Spagonia’s Rooftop Run and yet another return of Sonic 2’s Giant Robotnik mecha, it’s understandable that the hype levels for the console version of Sonic Generations are slowly inching toward critical levels.

But then there’s the forgotten black sheep, the 3DS version, pining for attention after a mostly dud performance and reception at this year’s E3. But as a reminder that it’s still alive and kicking and is begging for a home this November, Sega has revealed that 3DS owners will forgo scaling Sky Sanctuary’s heavenly heights in favor of stumping through Mushroom Hill’s seasonal segues.

In this case, Classic Sonic will run through the fungi forest in its Spring time prime while Modern Sonic tackles the level in its waning Autumn form, including an on-rail grinding section and giant flower propellers.

Check out the gallery for full shots of mushroom bouncing goodness.

Does that kanji next to the boost gauge say “Boost” in japanese?

    • Reply

It’s not Kanji, it’s Katana, and, yes, it says “boost” in Japanese.

Well, I guess I should apologise if there’s any chance I offended someone. Ignorant foreign guy speaking.

No harm done, I’m actually learning Japanese as a 2nd language for personal gain.  No way am I offended.

        • Reply

And, I made a typo…. “Katakana.”  Don’t know how I managed to make that mistake.

      • Reply

        Katakana, you meant.

Hm. It seems that the 3DS version might actually be worth playing, as long as the classic/modern/middle-way levels are not duplicates of their respective games’ geometry to either Sonic (GHZ staying that way would be sad, but meh…) and most importantly the GAMEPLAY IS FIXED. I’ll be very depressed if SEGA bombs their portable version (which it seems they will). If they don’t, I’ll be suprised, but happily.

Owning a 3DS was worth it.When does this come out anyway?

    • Reply

Sonic Retro says Nov. 22, but I read somewhere that it’s coming out Nov. 1.

I saw a PS3 game list at gamestop, and it showed Sonic Generations SD for November 1, 2011. I asked the Gamestop Guy what the SD stood for and it meant Street Date. That means it’s confirmed to be available for purchase on November 1st. So as far as Americans go, November 1st is the way to go. Whoo!

      • Reply

For the PS3/Xbox 360, it will be released on the 1st of November in the US and on the 4th of November in Europe.

The 3DS version will be released on the 22nd of November.

For the record, both are placeholder dates retailers put in lieu of an actual date. Sega hasn’t announced a concrete to-the-day date yet. We just know “November 2011.”

      Don’t you mean “hill” level?

      • Reply

Planet Wisp isn’t much of a hill level. Guess he was trying to include that

        • Reply

You forgot Seaside Hill. Then again if what the newest trailer is implying is true, it seems that Seaside is becoming more of a ruins level than a GHZ knock off

3DS zones ported to consoles as DLC. Make it happen, Sega.

    • Reply

What you just said is “give console players no reason to buy the 3DS version”.

      Will never happen. =)

Wow, I love how there’s no feedback on the 3DS Generations and tons on the Generations console update. Then again, I think the tribute SEGA did for Sonic’s 20th completely tells you what’s in both versions. Whatever was included in the trailer is going to be referenced or included in the game. Examples?

Green Hill Modern = Sonic Adventure orca is giant Chopper
Seaside Hill Classic = One of the screenshots showed a Hydrocity reference.

That’s all I can think of at the moment.

Generations 3DS is doomed to be the “inferior version”, eclipsed by its console brother. Does that mean it will be bad? Probably not. But from my experience with Sonic Colors, the DS version also lacked a lot of the charm the Wii version had and the gameplay just felt like Sonic Rush 3 with wisps… which may please a few people.
Eitherway, I’m hoping that Sega/Dimps don’t drag their feet too much and try to deliver a quality experience for 3DS owners.

I did like Colors Wii over the DS one, but I also liked the DS one, same for Unleashed for the console version VS mobile version so I say Sonic Generations 3DS can go either ways, but I have a feeling it’ll be a good game even if not better than the console version!

I also like how Dimps finally listened to feedback and fixed the uncurling and slowdown. My worries of the game are gone.

Anybody else wondering where all the badniks are?

I’m glad they haven’t forgotten about Mushroom Hill, here’s hope it’ll hit the console version as a DLC, finally that Mushroom Hill video is coming true and they even added that cool light effects… well sort of.

but I wonder, wasn’t the 3DS version to have levels from handhelds only? so far all we saw are from the Genesis!

They’re using the Genesis stages as a basis because for some reason, Iizuka doesn’t give a damn about the Game Gear games, even though they were, in their own right, very good platformers. But, with Sonic 1, Sonic 2(?) and Sonic 3 confirmed, there are four stages left to be shown in the 3DS version. All of them will be more modern titles, so now the real fun begins.

      • Reply

while I really liked the Game Gear ones, I hope if they pick levels from GBA/DS they go for the most memorable ones like Sky Babylon or Haunted Ship!

        • Reply

I hope the 3DS version has GBA/DS levels too. I’d love to see them do the music zone from Advanced 2

Sonic 2 Game Gear sucked. I’m sorry, but it sucked. Sonic 1 Game Gear was good, but not as good as the Genesis version. And as many people pointed out, the background in Green Hill is close to the Game Gear version.

        • Reply

Most of the people that say this usually say it because the first boss of Underground Zone beat the living tar out of them. I thought this too until a few years ago I said, “Screw it. I’m beating that game.” And after clearing that stage and just rolling through the rest of the game, I have a respect for it for being surprisingly fun.
That said, the Game Gear version suffers from a zoomed in screen. I recommend playing it on the Master System.

        … Four stages left?
        They confirmed (just) that?

        • Reply

The 3DS version is only getting seven stages.

  • Reply

Levels from the 3DS version im guessing are from (the first 3 are all ready confirmed) Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and SOnic 3+K
Going with what we already know is that there are 7 stages the 3 games all ready listed and im predicting
Sonic Advance 1, 2 and the and then rush and rush adventure so I dont think colours with be there 🙁

    • Reply

I think Advance 3 may be there with Rout 99, it’s a city level and it’ll be a crime if not put it there, I don’t see any level from the first Advance game that’s worth adding though!

      • Reply

I don’t understand why they can’t put all the 3DS Levels in the console versions
And wtf is the point playing modern sonic in 2D and classic in 2D.
Btw if there is a vita version I hope to god it has both in console.
Hope and pray is all I can do

        • Reply

But if they make a vita version and I can’t buy it.
Sega can you make it for the freaking Zune.
