Sneak Peek of Modern City Escape Music in Japanese Trailer

Over a week ago, we made available the full Classic version of City Escape’s stage music in Sonic Generations and the download ticker showed you all ate it up. Some even caught the Endless Mine reference within the auto-tuning (meaning yes, there was a point to the auto-tuning.)

Thanks to the Japanese trailer for City Escape, instead of the generic butt rock techno we got, we catch our first listen to the new modern remix of “Escape form the City”, featuring new vocals by series singers Tony Harnell and Ted Poley.

Opinion injection time: I don’t know about this one. I hope it’s just a studio draft because the vocals just sound like the singers are tired or have food in their mouths. There’s no strength in the guitars either. It just sounds passe and lackluster.

What do you guys think?

    Eeewww….

Bad version… Very bad version… Maybe the dashing version will be better… Unless this IS the dashing version in which case… The normal running version… MUST be bluech… I’ll just get an MP3 of the wicked classic version or the original version and play it on my 360 when I play modern’s City Escape stage…

I’m more of a fan of the original City Escape, followed by Classic SG, then this theme. I don’t think it’s bad, but I agree with the “sounds like food in mouths” singing. I’ll wait for full judgement till I hear the full thing, though.

And yeah, the Endless Mine auto tune was great. Yay for obscure Sonic 3 multiplayer track.

Gee, I wonder why modern sonic gets the crappy music?

      GenericSonic gets GenericMusic.

    I agree with your thoughts

    Better than original.
    No powerfull guitar is good.

  • Reply

I think it sounds like when the singers try to ‘experiment’ with different pitches when doing life concerts. Overall it doesn’t seem finished but is far from bad. As long as they keep it a guitar focused affair this should be good.

    OMG. *Sonicgasm*

Right at :30 is the part that bothers me the most. Too different for my likings. The Classic remix fared better, IMO. Too bad it’s not just a touched up version of the original, but hey, maybe it’ll sound better when it’s done.

Please tell me this isn’t the finished version.

    • Reply

I hope it isn’t. It doesn’t sound like it was fully mastered. You could hear differences in vocals, for example, if you listen to the production versions of the Sonic Heroes themes that were leaked out.

      • Reply

If this ends up being the final version, or the final sounds quite close to this, then I’ll just be muting the music and playing the original Escape From The City when I play Modern’s stage. The whole thing just bothers me. And the bass at the start. The fuck is that shit? THAT IS NOT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY

        • Reply

It’s the 2P version of Escape from the City remixed with the original. All the songs in this game are remixes, remember?

        • Reply

So it is. Never actually heard the 2P version. I feel slightly less anger towards it, but I still dislike the overall sound of that part.

  • Reply

While I think it’s a good idea to do an alternative take on the song, the version from SA2 had a lot more energy to it and the vocal work does seem worse. Not to mention the bass intro in the new version sounds extremely half assed compared to what was easily one of the most memorable parts of the original version of the song.

  • Reply

    It’s probably a WIP…at least I hope so

  • Reply

It’s sounds like horseshit at some parts, but it’s good.

  • Reply

They sound like they need a cough sweet. intro was good though.

  • Reply

I dunno, it sounds tangy and new. I think I like it actually. Bouncy guitars definitely make an upbeat songs. I’ll rip this and put it on my ipod.

    It’s been ruined.

Really? Only just now? You mean Sonic 06 and Sonic 4 didn’t do that enough for you?

You sir, are a trooper, and yet somewhat shallow 😐

      • Reply

Just because SA2 was my first ever Sonic game. Yes, those games were horrible, but the fact that they modified my first Sonic song into… THIS… is baffling D:

        • Reply

Then they just ruin mine too 🙁

      • Reply

maybe it’s one of those “add up” things… like, Sonic 06 blasted it, but it still stood… Sonic 4 blew it up, but there was still something to maintain… but this? this was the last straw, and boom. Marble Zone.

Na na na by My Chemical Romance.

For me, this version is better, I can listen Bass Line with quality.
Mmm, the boost version of music probably put the full guitar song.

  • Reply

Ehhh, this version of City Escape is a bit cut down so I’m not going to judge this just yet.

  • Reply

I’ll wait to judge until I hear the entire fucking song.

    Y’know, like a reasonable person.

  • Reply

It does feel kind of weak…

Music has been the one constantly good thing about the sonic series, until sonic generations modern sonic music. Wasn’t that keen on the green hill remix either. Classic city escape was way cool though.

    • Reply

Cmon dude, the green hill remix had more EPICNESS then that city escape remix

  • Reply

Classic good, modern bad. I guess it’s a thing of Balance or something. If they used the original it would be tooo epic.

  • Reply

After sonic heroes and Shadow, the music becomes so crappy.
The unleashed main theme is cool, but not gooooood.
    The colors theme is pop-gay-crap

    • Reply

I’m not sure how a song can be homosexual, but okay.

      • Reply

I love that Colors theme is apparently “pop gay crap” and Heroes cheesey WE ARE FRIENDS FOREVER TOGETHER theme is considered the last of the good stuff. Some people make no sense XD

        • Reply

I liked Sonic Colors’ theme songs >_> and it’s not pop, it’s electronic. It fits the theme of the game. Be more open minded with music man.

Tyler, I hope you’re speaking to Mcgigas and not me, because I was MOCKING him for that very reason, not agreeing with him.

  • Reply

I kinda assumed they would use the SA2 version for the Modern City Escape theme. I mean, what’s the point of doing a guitar version if they already have a guitar version that everyone already knows and loves?
All they needed to do was tweak it for the BOOST version and everyone’s happy.

Ah well, here’s hoping this version gets a drastic improvement anyways.

    • Reply

Agreed. Sonic Team, stop getting in fights with common sense

      • Reply

        Two things:
-There’s no common sense in this world anymore.
-Example: CAPCOM ARE PRACTICALLY BOYCOTTING MEGAMAN right now. Fans are denied of Mega Man in Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3 are cancelled! There are things to justify UMVC3 (such as ENOUGH CHARACTERS ALREADY REPRESENTING MEGA MAN, I MEAN COME ON THEY ALSO HAVE FRANK WEST IN THERE. HIS REAL MEGA BUSTER IS NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU PEOPLE!? Yes, that’s how desperate they are for the Maverick Hunter). Apparently there’s no common sense for both Capcom AND the fans which complain (I’m fresh off of the Shoryuken comments…)

  • Reply

Yeah, this version isn’t really bad, it’s just the original is better. I was kind of let down, but what can you do. Right?

  • Reply

After listening to it about like 34 times, it sounds pretty promising.

    • Reply

      same here lol

    • Reply

      Magic number 34…damnit.

  • Reply

I think this one is awesome.

I completely disagree about the guitar, I think its still strong they just led the song with the bass more than before, which was much more interesting than the generic guitar .

  • Reply

I feel like the original is waaaaaay better. I can only imagine what they would have done to something like Green Forest… and to think, there was maaaad hype for the “City Escape” redo when it was announced some time back.

  • Reply

Actually the “generic butt rock techno” is an instrumental version of “Na Na Na” by My Chemical Romance… I find it sad how you don’t recognize this immediately, as it is an incredibly popular and well known song…

    • Reply

Yes, I’m supposed to know a song by a band I don’t listen to. Okay.

      • Reply

What Gene said. I didn’t know or care to know, either.

    • Reply

I did post this earlier, but okay. And no, it’s barely “popular” and “well known” compared to their previous work. But, this is getting off topic anyway.

  • Reply

It seems …..ok. I mean, it is not the best in the world, but it’s not a bad start. The bass line at the beginning is pretty good, but the guitar… sounds like shit. I can play this through my old Marshall amp, that gives me an ass load of feedback, and still make it sound better. The vocals..are ok, I mean, it’s kinda how Cash Cash is doing City Escape Classic’s vocals. It’s not terrible, but it’s really half-assed. I mean, hopefully, praying to God on this one, that this is really not the final product, because if it is, then this game might have lost some of my respect.

  • Reply

Being a musician myself, i can tell this is just a recording that has not been studio dubbed yet, the guitar parts are not finalized other wise they would be more dominant, or at least as much as the bass. I do like how it sounds, in terms of the arrangement it is bad ass. much more technical than the original. I love how tony harnell and ted poley switch up on the vocals, thats pretty awesome. for all of you overly dramatic nit pickers out there, (sadly many of my fellow sonic fans) this is not the final version and you will all eat your words when it is released.

    • Reply

I had a feeling as much that it hasn’t been fully mastered yet. Crush 40, for example, sound quite weird before being cleaned up in post-production.
Good catch with the 2P City Escape reference. I honestly forgot about that version of the song. Here’s a link for everyone else to check it out.

plus i dont think any of you realized that the guitar part is very similar if not making reference to Sa2 battle’s multiplayer mode, when you play SA2 battle there is an alternate city escape level and the song is different than the original city escape. the stop and go quality of the guitar in this song is very similar to that of the added SA2 battle multiplayer level music.

This is awesome, I like them all 😀

  • Reply

Needs full version soon to release the Generations mix for this stage

  • Reply

I think it just doesn’t sound….done. It’s missing a lead guitar track. But for a WiP it sounds pretty good. Can’t wait to hear the full version.

  • Reply

Sounds kinda bland, it could’t be final version of it.

  • Reply

Shit sonic for the shit part od the game aslong as they nail classic sonic thats all i care abput. The preview at the end of the clip im guessing thats rooftop run zone?

    • Reply

Yep. The usual little teaser for a level they’ll show off in the future. I wonder how they’re going to change up the Unleashed and Colors levels so they don’t just feel like recycled unused levels from their respective games.

  • Reply

I’m OK with this; I think they focused on the harmonies more, as the 2 voices sound further apart from each other than before.

  • Reply

It’s not that bad,but it isn’t as good as the original.

hope this isn’t the final version through. 😐

  • Reply

Bassline is funky fresh, guitar work is interesting, drums could use some more punch, and the vocals sound pretty bland in my opinion. They lack that sparkle and edginess that made the original fun to listen to. That being said, I still don’t think it’s bad. It’s cool, and I’m sure they’ll be touching it up in post.

  • Reply

sounds like the base player was really fucking having a sick time while the vocals and guitar were well just tired and lazy. I sure hope they keep the base though cause that guy is rocking

  • Reply

That remix must be a rehearsal. It sounds like they got to together and were like “ok ready to jam guys, 1, 2, 3,” *plays* And Sega just threw in the song for background music. (That’s the most logical answer) It’s a good remix, I like it, but I personally can not believe that a musician would allow something like that to be the final product. It’s got “rehearsal” written all over it. But it’s good so the final product should be sweet.

  • Reply

I like the direction it is going but it sounds empty.

  • Reply

This is just a ‘Teaser’ of what to come for Modern Sonic’s City Escape Stage, cause Sonic can’t have that music since it sounds plain.

The music sounds like a draft,
But in the Final Version, It will sound more improved, polished and complete.

  • Reply

Oh and it sounds like a Sonic Heroes track! The opening riffs remind me of ‘Race to Win’

    • Reply

And yet, Race To Win is Sonic Rivals 2…
Ah well. On your Wah-Wah comment down below…New Super Mario Bros. much? (you know what I’m talking about, right? If not, go search its music up. I assume that you’re not going to, though. This is SONIC we’re talking about.)

  • Reply

But I LOOOOOVE this song, and I wish I get Sonic Generations soon despite some ‘Wah Wah’ and stuff here and there!

  • Reply

Well, it looks like I’ll be playing classic Sonic’s version of City Escape for this level. I really, really, don’t like the way this sounds. I think it starts off good, but then just gets meh. The vocals sound “off”, and the guitar just doesn’t seem right. Damn. I thought since classic’s was great this one would be too.

  • Reply

I don’t prefer this version, but I think Sonic & the Black Knight has the best recent Sonic soundtrack. Fight the Knight and Knight of the Wind are two of my favorite songs in the entire franchise.
