More Classic and Modern Sonic in Chemical Plant, Plus “The Blocks”

Earlier today, Sega decided to share a few more screenshots of the Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic Generations, the latest level officially confirmed to be getting the star-studded treatment. While the original unveiling was focused on Classic Sonic with only a hint of what the Modern take would be, the latest batch of screens get to show how the green-eyed wonder will handle the same terrain.

Once again, we’re promised to explore areas of the level that we’ve never seen before, and who knows, maybe some of that Mega Mack will actually have a floor for our modern hero! Probably not. And just look at those badniks. I can only imagine how excited Lander is going to be to hurt Sonic this go round.

For all you Classic fans out there, yes. Your fears have been answered. They are back. You know what I’m talking about.

Wonder how many times it’ll take to get to the top this time…well, while we all sit and dread the rising water, check out the gallery below and get yourself psyched.

This makes me even more anxious for the new trailer or the music reveal! 8D

    What fears? The purple water?

If you don’t get it, the rising Mega Mack in some sections of the original (the acidic purple water in CPZ) doesn’t help the fact that you’re also trying to move up those platforms that usually come in four squares, which are a bit hard to jump by (and even harder when the Mega Mack gets to you if you LET it get to you) and the platforms themselves could crush you during those acts while you were trying to escape! (Act 2, from what I remember. That’s where the hard part was)

^ This is probably the most epic scene I’ve seen in a Sonic game. Looks so much like Eggmanland with that perspective and those twists look amazing!

    Chemmy looks sweet

They pussed out and put an extra life there. Kind of takes away that feeling of dread.

Well I won’t be getting that one up haha

When is this coming out? November? Guess I’ll have to spam myself with SA2’s Green Hill Zone until then. šŸ˜›

Yes! As much as that section can be annoying for some people, I still love Chemical Plant and will patiently await the trailer šŸ™‚

So… The evil blocks are back… Oh joy! I love to see how I’ll get out of this one. The dread and fear will come back to those oblivious at the wideness of a double-block. I can’t wait now, and Sonic Team: please make a PC version Now! I NEED to play it!

    Modern Metal Sonic boss maybe?

i never understood why people found this level hard to begin with. when i first got here it was pretty easy to me. purple water or not. now labyrinth zone was a different story. but chemical plant as i remember it was pretty easy as fuck. šŸ™‚

Yeah its the second level wtf its easy. always has been

As much as I’m really excited for this game, and those amazing graphics, yet again I see greeneyes running in 2D an awful lot and yet again I must ask…if classic sonic has to stick to 2D why can’t modern sonic stick to 3D we don’t need 2D modern sonic. Other than that this looks fantastic

That waterslide looks pretty fun. Hell, most of modern Sonic’s screenshots for this level look pretty epic.

I agree…modern sonic’s 2D transitions are unnecessary. Its sloppy. Dreamcast styled 3D with unleashed’s speed and camera is win.

    • Reply

Because boosting all the time in 3D would make you trip balls from all the shit rushing past you. And besides that platforming doesn’t really work in Unleashed day 3D environments. It works when it’s 2D, but not otherwise.

    Agreed.
Now can we realease more levels than the demo confirmed.
And redo the idea of hidden palace zone for a boss

The water is impossible to meā€¦mainly because I always skip that purple water area and am probably too rusty to actually get through alive.

Looking at the screen shot of Modern Sonic sliding down a waterslide in a tube has me wondering about something. Since Modern Sonic is going into 2D a fair amount, I am starting to wonder why they couldnā€™t have Classic Sonic in 3D (Sonic 2, CD, 3&K, Drift, 3D Blast, Blast etc.). Obviously the special stages and unrefined concepts of old could be used for that (perhaps coupled with a pseudo-father/son moment where Modern tries to show off his extra dimension in a manner similar to riding a bike for the first time with Classic being just like ā€˜whateverā€™ and runs off to fight UFOs).

there is classic sonic in 3d. check the blog post a while ago where someone put modern sonic in classic stages and classic sonic in modern stages. there is a 3d engine in there.

I recall reading that before, but I meant something more…official. The 16-bit era had a large focus in pushing towards 3D and Sonic Team kept pushing more then any other character of that time period. It only makes sense that he should get a proper 3D section that doesn’t require me to learn how to operate anything beyond the power button.

You N00B, that was never a fear, that part was sooo easy.

    • Reply

Well it wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to do as far as platforming goes but I agree, it wasn’t that hard at all

Maybe Retro is getting these blocks confused with the blocks underwater, which were a bit harder but still a breeze

Keep in mind David is appealing to those of us who played it in 1992 and 1993 as little four year olds, not so much the more older crowd or those who played it later. Because I certainly remember getting stuck there as a four year old. That drowning music…

I, at the age of somewhere around four or five, actually liked that rising water part. It was fun climbing to the top, listening for the sound of the AI Tails dying.

I remember barely making it up, falling off the platforms then having to climb it…again…underwater…]:[

The second to last screenshot of Chemical Plant Zone already tells me that this level is going to be completely stunning to playthrough! This may sound really stupid, but I just hope that CPZ doesn’t try to include rock in Modern Sonic’s version of the theme. That’s all I’m gonna’ say.

    YES.

What I wanna know is will Modern Sonic go in his own version of the chem-tube (water-rise part).

Holy mind fuck, Chemical Plant Zone is Stardust Speedway. That’s Ni…

Wait. Modern Sonic running into possible Stardust Speedway.

Two ideas: MODERN Metal Sonic boss OR Generic Modern Eggman boss.

The only thing that still bothers me, is that classic Sonic looks so shrinked.

I would love to see them put the cancelled hidden palace zone from sonic 2 in this game…

maybe the real question should be how many players will go for that “conveniently” placed 1UP before racing to the top.

Do people actually think this section of the game was hard in Sonic 2? The only difficult part of CPZ was the boss.

    • Reply

Most people still don’t know that ducking makes the mega mack he drops on Sonic not hurt. But at the same time, most people these days know to just jump on him as soon as he enters and by the time he has enough mega mack collected, he’s dead.

Anyone notice how the drowning theme channels John Williams’ “Jaws” theme? the original Genesis scoring is the best version.

dis is a little of topik but why dont they modern sonics speashel stage sonic 3 and knuckles and classic sonics stage sonic 2.
