Let’s Pretend It’s 1998 For Five Minutes

So I’ve been in a Sonic Adventure kick for a few days now. Looking back at what made the game great, going through how it was developed…there’s no denying that, regardless of how you feel about the game nowadays, the Sonic Team that made that game put a lot of care and effort into it. They gave everything the thought it deserved, didn’t take any one aspect lightly, and somehow had a blast while making it. And they went to a different country just to gain inspiration! That’s nothing to sneeze at.

What some of you may have forgotten, though was the huge media push that went on during the buildup for the first game. And how was it all launched off? With a gala event right in Tokyo, showing off the game for the first time to the masses. Being a thirteen year old kid at the time, I couldn’t attend in person, instead watching a live stream over dial-up at a blazing 33.6k. Sure, I couldn’t understand a word of it, and I could barely make out anything over that RealPlayer stream, but gosh darn it, it was amazing. It was Sonic.

And it wasn’t hosted by this guy:

The above footage was taken from a “video magazine” called Fuse. I bet you wish you were as cool as that guy. Then you could make weird faces when talking about wrestling and awkwardly try to hit on that girl in the video and never get to first base. Yes, he is very late 90’s, but there’s nothing wrong with drifting back to a more simple time. I still want those pins…and that book…

I like Sonic Adventure but I think this is a good case of nostalgia. They didn’t put all of that much care into it. Have you looked at the syncing of the voices before? 🙂

hmm, how about the original Japanese dub. perhaps it’s synched to the Japanese dub?

but then again, lip synching was pretty brand new back then. so it was excusable

besides, Ryan Drummond’s attitude voice made everything better 😀

        Heck yeah! Go Drummond! 😀

Shh! Don’t let Slingerland catch you guys appreciating Sonic voice acting. He’ll be very angry, and might even spend hours piecing together a parody of you to post on the front page! You guys should know better than to value things that Slingerland, in his infinite wisdom and maturity as one of the leaders of the Sonic Retro community, does not.

Who made Slingerland the absolute boss? Sonic Retro has plenty of other leaders, and they don’t ALL share the same ideas. You know what I say? Let Slingerland catch me writing this message! I love Drummond! I’ll take you on, Adventure hater!

    That guy was indeed awesome.

Also, nice to finally see Sanshiro and the crowd chanting Sonic’s name. That is used just before the battle with Perfect Chaos, right?

I thought Sonic Adventure was the shit when it was first being advertised, I honestly remember being in class looking at one of my gaming magazines with a picture of Sonic and Tails riding in the Tornado with the title reading: “Sonic Adventure (128 bit)” and thinking “holy crap! That’s two times better then Mario!” having heavily being into the N64 at the time. The Dreamcast really was ahead of it’s time, I also remember after that I all I played was House of the Dead 2 and Sonic Adventure. Which unfortunately enough were practically the only games I had for it, save for Power Stone 1 & 2 which were sorta fun, and Sonic Adventure 2. It was kind of uncomfortable with the sexual tension thing that went on with Knuckles and the big boobed bat though. Thanks for ruining the innocence of many children Sonic Team, and sending them all to deviant art.

But I’ll digress, I’m going off course.

    Ahh… Remembering things…
