Snowmageddon and Sonic: The Final…Flurry

Here at Sonic Retro World HQ, the blizzard has more or less passed, but the evidence remains everywhere. Good luck, New England (and to our Australian readers with Cyclone Yasi.)  We’ve tallied up the votes on the four level divisions from yesterday’s poll, and have narrowed down our finalists. Sonic Unleashed‘s Cool Edge deserves an honorable mention, as it was neck-and-neck between the water-running, icy half-pipe level and Sonic Adventure‘s Ice Cap–in the end, the margin was only 13 votes.

Our finalists, in alphabetical order:

Blizzard Peaks, the Sonic Rush Adventure snowboarding and springy vine home of the Vikings

Diamond Dust Zone, Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island‘s level full of icy blasts and slippery surfaces

IceCap Zone, the original winter zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and proof that robotic penguins can seriously slide

Ice Cap, Sonic Adventure‘s platforming-heavy level with snowboarding antics

Actually, considering that three out of four of these levels feature snowboarding, clearly it must be a fan-favorite. This final round of voting will determine the greatest winter level for our readers. What particularly makes you like one over the others? The soundtrack? Gameplay styles? That face Tails makes in the Ice Cap cutscene during the level? Let us know in the comments!

As much as I love Sonic Adventure…(no sarcasm) Imma have to vote fore Sonic 3&K’s Ice Cap Zone. It was just…so totally sweet…

    The tag does not lie.

I did not see this result coming at all.

This left me so torn. Diamond Dust has the best music, Ice Cap Zone has the best overall gameplay experience, and Adventure Ice Cap just felt so… fresh, flavorful, and cinematic.

In the end, I went with Ice Cap Adventure solely because “Be Cool, Be Wild, Be Groovy” is such a damn good (and fitting) song.

I voted for Ice Cap Zone. Why? Because I love the BGM for both acts, and I felt so happy when I first made it to the level. CNZ was a bitch to finish (that damn barrel) and the snowboarding sequence at the beginning is awesome. Forget SA’s snowboarding sequence, ICZ’s is 10x better. xP Also, the vertical wrap glitch. <3

Ice cap from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The music composition is just epic.
Its one of the most remixed songs on newgrounds don’t ya know :’)
The level sprites are pretty nice and I think the snowboarding scene will stay in fans hearts forever 🙂

Clearly, Sonic needs a dedicated snowboard game. (without an inch of “the world is gonna explode if we dont race!” story)
The Olympic games dont count btw.

Would be kinda fun seeing a more SSX Tricky style game with Sonic characters in it just to have a goo compitition.
As fun as hover boar racing for the fate of the planet is >.>

No surprise IceCap one is such a favorite. It has the best level design out of all the games despite having only one somewhat short snowboard section.
Man that was a cool level intro.

I could see a Sonic snowboarding game–but only after Sega actually makes some good Sonic games and gets back on its feet. Sonic Colors was good, but it’s not nearly enough.

The first Sonic Riders was pretty good minus the dumb story and a few small quirks. (loved the music)
So a snowboard game would seem easy enough if they didn’t bother with random gimmicks.
Sonic colors didnt have a snow level, so it loses. xD
Don’t hold your breath for a good sonic game but maybe thats a good point.
With physics engines all about and an open source penguin game sorta like a snow boarding game, the fans could probably manage something good.

How hard would it be to mod Sonic characters into SSX Tricky or what-have-you anyway? I’m not a modder myself, so I have no idea…

Only a matter of changing the models, then getting them to display right and maybe editing the sounds. Providing we can manage to access the game files.
Plus takes a ton of time for a small amount of content that barely anyone can use.
Better off making a new game from scratch.
That way Icecap Zone could be remade into a full sized course.:3

Ice Cap from Sonic 3 is where I’m placing my vote. You just can’t beat nostalgia.

Actually, you can. It just takes alot of courage.

        >_> That’s just one mans opinion…

In all seriousness though, yes, there has been some tracks that are overall more appreciated then the Original Ice Cap Zone, but I’d love to see that theme remixed and used in an upcoming Sonic game.
