“Sonic Colors” Announced!

Sonic Colors for the Wii and DS has been announced today, along with a teaser trailer! It seems like this is Sega’s answer to Mario Galaxy.

Details from Sega of America’s Blog:

We’re excited to announce a brand-new game for Sonic the Hedgehog! Sonic Colors is a high speed action-adventure in which Sonic races through theme park-inspired worlds to rescue a colorful alien race from the clutches of Dr. Eggman. An extraordinary amusement park has been seen orbiting around the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog, and rumors are spreading that an alien race of Wisps, who have a unique colorful energy, are being held captive there by the evil Dr. Eggman. Soon after arriving at the amusement park, Sonic discovers he is able to use these mysterious alien forces to help the Wisps escape!

Sonic Colors will be available on the Wii and the Nintendo DS around holiday 2010. Sonic Colors for the Wii seamlessly combines both 3D and classic 2D game play perspectives, while the Nintendo DS version takes full advantage of the console’s dual screen.

Sonic Colors sees Sonic accelerating to adrenaline-pumping super speeds and blasting through obstacles in ways never before seen in a Sonic game. The alien Wisps featured in the game each have a unique “Color Power” that, once freed, Sonic is able to absorb while speeding through the various theme park inspired planets. The Wisp energy enables Sonic to create new paths through the stages by drilling through the ground (Yellow Drill) for example, or speeding through the stage as a laser (Cyan Laser). Stringing the Wisp power-ups together creates a combo that increases Sonic’s boost gauge even more quickly. Exclusive Wisp power-ups will be available for both Wii and the Nintendo DS versions, ensuring a unique and super speedy gameplay experience for Sonic fans everywhere.

    Yawn.

from the description, it sounds like Sonic Unleashed without the Werehog.

    I’m admittedly slightly hyped.

on another note, this is definitely looking bad in terms of a 20th anniversary game…

c’mon Sega… traditionally, the anniversary game that ends in 0 is supposed to be good.

    0: Sonic 1 (amazing)
5: Sonic 3D Blast (not so much)
    10: Sonic Adventure 2 (amazing)
15: Sonic 06 (not so much)
20: ???? (get with the pattern damnit)

    • Reply

You call that a pattern? That’s two games, one of which was the initial release (which was subsequently one-upped four times in a row), and the other is hardly worthy of building up expectations for “amazing anniversary games”.

Besides, if your patterns are to be so strictly believed, then your expectations for this game should be HIGHER, not lower.

      • Reply

right… except, there was 2 years of no Sonic games between Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic Adventure 2. (unless you count Sonic Shuffle). And it was only being done on one console.

my expectations for the 20th anniversary game is lowered because of the two Sonic games that are coming out by the end of 2010, which would lead me to believe that their concentration is divided.

Fun fact: Sonic 4 and the Wii version of Sonic Colors are being worked on by two entirely separate developers, and therefore Colors’ primary development will not be impeded by anyone’s divided attention.

Unfortunately, Dimps (the company working on Sonic 4) is apparently in charge of the DS version. So, if anything, that could potentially impact Sonic 4 and the DS version of Colors. While that does put a frown on my face in regards to Sonic 4, I think that handheld ports of console games should be dismissed as half-assed cash-ins anyway, so I’m not too worried about Colors DS.

Descriptions hypes me A LOT! (Wii version) BUT I wish there would be more enemies and more platforming. Unleashed felt like a On-Rail Shooter without shooting.

    Sounds like a racer.

Wow, that came out of nowhere.
Sounds fun, and there’s Tails too!

    Uh… huh…

I hope they think up of a better name.

I’m laughing at the fact the title of this uses ‘Colors’, but the video used uses ‘Colours’.

Why doesn’t he move his arms when he runs anymore? Did the Animators get lazy?

I’m excited they’re going back to a Sci-Fi story, but so far it does just sound like Secret Rings, Unleashed, and Black Knight. I’m hoping there’s a bit more of a platformer hidden within this one.

    • Reply

I think he’d look pretty stupid if his arms moved. They’d either be too slow or at the same speed of his legs which would also look stupid.

      • Reply

With his hands as big as they are, I would have preferred they at least balled up into fists à la Unleashed. It’s the little things in life, lol

It seems to be a Sonic Unleashed game style without the werehog of course. The powerups hopefully will just be an aura around Sonic and not some sort of kiddy costume like Mario has.

  • Reply

Man, I practically shat myself when I first heard the news. Sort of lost interest when I read the bit about the Wii version having 3D bits (Sonic Unleashed) and the speed boosts (Sonic Rush).

From what I’ve seen, it seems kind of…girly. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with being colorful and bright, but I fear Sonic and Dr. Robotnik will turn out wimpy compared to their previous iterations. It sounds like something out of the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Remember, Bowser’s aim in Super Mario Galaxy (which this game is clearly based on) was to DESTROY THE FRICKING UNIVERSE and re-create it in his own image. And there were numerous dark and menacing levels in that game, along with bright and cheery ones. Why should Dr. Robotnik, world-conqueror extraordinaire, be any different in his goal?

If Sega is going to do this right–and I sincerely hope they will–they should add some edge to this game. I don’t need Shadow in this, but I also don’t want this to be a kiddish romp through bright, cheery, and harmless levels.

Of course, this isn’t even near a full trailer, so I can almost guarantee there will be changes between now and its release. But if this is what the entire game will be like, I’ll think twice before buying it.

I, for one, am fucking excited to see Sonic doing something besides saving the fucking universe. I am so goddamn sick of this “dark gaia, perfect chaos, biolizard” bullshit. Sonic games are SUPPOSED to be bright and cheery, not angsty and face-palmingly epic serious. Metropolis or Death Egg Zone should be as “dark” as it ever gets. I’m sure Robotnik’s little theme park is gonna secretly big a great big, unoriginal laser cannon, or a means to harvest energy to summon Galactus… but I really Really REALLY hope they keep it as simple and light. I’m GLAD to see something so carefree. Even the promo art actually shows a REAL goddamn smile on his face for once. It’s refreshing.

I guess it’s a matter of differing ideas of what Sonic should be. I, for one, feel Sonic should be more of a punk, and Robotnik more aggressive. You feel the opposite, and that’s just fine by me. It’s just a matter of opinion.

I am also getting sick of Dr. Robotnik trying to revitalize various gods and monsters to further his plans, but that’s because I feel he is running out of ideas and becoming less evil. I mean, he’s had to team up with Sonic on several occasions; to me, that’s counterintuitive. But that’s just me.

        • Reply

I wouldn’t mind Sonic having more of a cocky punky attitude, to be honest. And I would love a more aggressive Robotnik. I just miss the days when Robotnik and his bad-ass war machines WERE the threat, and not the “ancient God” universe-threatening garbage we both mentioned. Sonic doesn’t NEED to be so epic. A simple good guy vs bad guy story has always been more than sufficient. I can’t really tell what gives you the impression that Sonic and Robotnik are going to be tutu-wearing sissies, just because the promotional cutscene focused on a cute little introduction instead of the final boss fight. Is it just the idea that he’s creating a theme park instead of a battlestation? I think that’s a pretty weak assumption. You can bet your ass the theme park thing is just a cover to lure in the aliens so he can harvest their energy and do something evil, or something to that effect.

Wow, this looks really interesting! Granted, they’ve shown no gameplay, but I’m kind of excited nonetheless. The music and bright colors got me, I think.

On another note, I really like how the logo looks. It’s kind of a silly thing to admire, but I love that shine over ‘Sonic’ and that lovely blue surrounding it. Makes me want to go try something out for the Sonic Freerunner logo (they’re in desperate need of a decent one as it is :3).

I think the name needs some work and the trailer should always have gameplay footage, even if it’s only 2.5 seconds long.

Honestly, I’m excited. This looks and sounds cool. And I like Mario Galaxy, so if this is SEGA’s answer to it, then I might like it even more.

Two reactions: “-_-” and “…and remember kids! you can’t judge someone by the color of their alien exterior!”

…hey now that i think about it…is it going to be called “Sonic Colours” in Britain?

The moment I saw this trailer last night I almost died with excitement, it looks really good, it has beautiful graphics, and Tails is flying with Sonic and not in some mechanical device again! It seems like Sega are going back to what made Sonic games so fun! 🙂
I think the aliens are adorable and it has a retro feeling to it, this teaser trailer gave me a very good vibe. When I first saw the news on here I was curious and skeptical at first due to the name I’ll admit, but I’m in love already now lol.

I loved the very colorful, lush, futuristic and fantasy like environment Sonic and Tails are in and the trailer and story remind me of the Sega Genesis games. Those games had pretty simple story plots and this one seems to have that as well. The background also reminds me of futuristic stuff from the Genesis like Ristar and some Sonic games too.

The power ups reminds me of the power ups in the old Sega Genesis games as well like in Sonic 3 you had the bubble shield, fire shield, and electric shield and each shield did something different and improved Sonic’s movements and performances.

I have a feeling the power ups are going to be like Sonic 3’s where you break the capsule and are granted with that ability for a short period of time and I’m perfectly okay with that. I highly doubt they are going to give Sonic multiple new forms for each ability (I really hope not).

You know something interesting, the teaser trailer uses a sped up remix of splash hill zone music from Sonic 4. I really like the music and it was also something that really attracted me to the trailer. If the game has good retro sounding music like that I’ll love it! 🙂

They must have been working on this game for a long time…I wonder if they purposely distracted our attention with Sonic 4 as they continued to work on Sonic Colours. I also find it interesting that both Sonic 4 and Sonic Colours are going to be released in late 2010.

Well I know what I want to get over the holidays and thats Sonic 4 and Sonic Colours, I have a good feeling Sega are starting to get back on track! 🙂

Because Sega just can’t give up on 3D games, even if they know it’s a gigantic waste of time and money.

…although that’s pretty high up there with the people that write paragraphs upon paragraphs on its announcement.

    Christ almighty.

Whether the games are actually good or not, the fact is that they generally DO make Sega quite a bit of money. And that money speaks louder than any review website or comment like this.

OK I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THIS BLOG FOR THE PAST 426,943 YEARS AND HAVEN’T COMMENTED ON THIS BLOG, EVER, BUT I JUST COULDN’T TAKE THE NEWS. THIS GAME IS GOING TO WIN. I MEAN, JUST LOOK AT THAT EXISTENT GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE!

Um, that’s not gameplay footage. That’s just a trailer done by SEGA’s animation team.

“…Sega just can’t give up on 3D games, even if they know it’s a gigantic waste of time and money.”

Well, it isn’t the fact that they can work with either 2D or 3D, it’s just that they have not found a way to truly utilize Sonic in a 3D setting yet. They have 3D graphics down, sure, but when it all comes down to the mechanics it all goes down the drain. 🙁

    The Good:
    -No shitty storybook plot
    -FUCKING TAILS
-Sounds like it will be largely speed/platforming based
-Concept has just enough “twist” to make it unique, yet not too gimmicky
-Looks like it will be a beautiful game
-The logo looks like a very delicious hard candy

    The Bad:
-There’s gotta be a reason why it’s a Wii exclusive, and I’m willing to bet it has to do with some funky control scheme.
-If this game is a major success, I don’t want to see future Sonic titles get even more Barney-fied
-Nintendo Power’s cover says “SONIC REBORN.” #dejavu
-Can’t we just get ONE more Sonic Adventure? Please? Speed is great, but it’s not everything.

I would probably be more excited for this game if it was coming to 360/PS3; not because of platform availability (I have PS3 and Wii), but because it would probably have a more “normal” control style. Not that I’m not pumped to have a new Sonic game on the horizon.

We’ll just have to see what E3 holds. Keeping my hopes high, as you all should.

Sonic Heroes, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic ’06, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Unleashed.
Knowing the above list, I know that I should be cynical regarding this announcement, but I don’t want to sound unoriginal. And so I will join in with the other Sonic fans in denial that say they’re hyped about the game, and in turn sound like a complete fucking idiot. Here goes:
I’M HYPED ABOUT SONIC COLORS, WOOOOT!

  • Reply

If it’s coming out this holiday 2010, then that means Sega had to have been working on Colours THIS WHOLE TIME, even during Sonic 4’s development. That means that they don’t give a shit about returning to retro; as long as 4 year olds mindlessly buy their crap games, Sega’s just fine and dandy with itself as it is. And if enough dumbc*nts boycott Sonic 4 on the day of its release, then Sega’ll conclude 2D Sonic games aren’t commercially viable, and stick to making 3D games like this one.
My opinion’s subject to change as more footage/screenshots emerge, but ’till then, fuck Sonic Colors.P.S. can everyone who reads this comment mistakenly and consciously say how I’m stupid and cynical, and presume I’m judging the entirety of the completed game as a whole? Because guys like you make my day.

Actually, I agree with you. From what I have seen–all 22 seconds of it–this looks kind of lame. Of course, I have yet to see any actual gameplay footage; so I’m still hopeful–but very concerned.

This is ridiculous, a random teaser video pops out of nowhere about some game nobody knows what it will be exactly, and people still knit-pick on the extremely minimal amount of information revolving around it at the moment? What in the world is wrong with this fanbase?

Well now it’s clear : some fans are ready to judge on anything without seeing the thing in itself. The only thing I can say about this video is that for now, it is totaly irrelevent.

I can’t wait for this, all the other 3D Sonic games from millenium or up have failed, the only game from that era which you could say was ‘good’ was Sonic Unleashed, but the night-time stages ruined the game. SEGA says this game is basically Sonic Unleashed without the daytime stages. Or at least that’s my perspective.
