On this SEGA News Bits we discuss the news that spread through social media like wild fire. SEGA has announced that they would be moving on from licensing Sonic the Hedgehogcomics to Archie. It has been about six month since Archie Comics released a brand new issue of Sonic the Hedgehog and its multiple side series, but now with San Diego Comic Con closing in they finally let the cat out of the bag. On this episode we discuss what leaving Archie Comics could mean for Sonic the Hedgehog comics, what happened in the last story arc, what comic book publishers should take over, and what Archie Comics original characters we will miss if the series continues without them.

Inside SEGA’s booth were a dozen demo stations for both Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces making their first and last E3 appearance. Con-goers did their best to pilfer posters given out any way they can. E3 was packed this year due to the convention allowing the public to enter for the first time in years which means the lines were more than double and that means plenty of eager people wanting to check out whats new.

It’s hard to believe that Sonic Mania is only a short two months away. It seems like only yesterday the game was first announced, a magical look at the Sonic experience that could have been on the Sega Saturn. When the digital pre-order trailer came out a couple weeks ago, some assumed that very little new content would be revealed in the days prior to E3. Yes, we’re a bit late to the party, but SEGA did announce a new level in style: Chemical Plant Zone.
Sure, you’ve watched it before, but there’s no shame in jammin’ out to that Act 2 music all over again. Hit the jump to see what else Mania has been up to as it speeds to it’s release.
Sega just released this lovely new trailer for Sonic Mania. It features animation by Sonic Mega Drive artist Tyson Hesse and music by Hyper Potions, along with a first look at Stardust Speedway from Sonic CD. Also there’s a reference to one of Sonic’s rejected character designs, so that’s neat!
The trailer also reveals when you’ll be able to download the game: on August 15th. Plus it can now be pre-ordered on Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Live Marketplace for $19.99/€19.99/£15.99.

Now that the SXSW Sonic the Hedgehog panel has passed, George and Barry discuss what we learned regarding Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. So that Sonic SXSW panel happened, and we got some pretty good reveals out of it. And enough of them for us to actually make a recap article for once! 2017 promises to be a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog. With not one but two major game releases slated to come out, excitement and speculation has been running wild. Since being announced last July, both Sonic Mania and “Project Sonic 2017” have been shrouded in mystery, with only scant pieces of information being released on either title since their grand unveiling.
Though there’s nothing wrong with keeping things close to the chest, SEGA has promised to reveal some new details on both games at this year’s SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas. To get the hype train rolling, the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter has been teasing some of what’s to come, especially for Sonic’s return to form in the 2D platforming landscape.
The SXSW 2017 schedule has confirmed that Sega will hold an official Sonic the Hedgehog panel at the event this year. The panel will feature Aaron Webber (PR), Mike Pollock (voice of Eggman), Roger Craig Smith (voice of Sonic), and Takashi Iizuka (producer) as speakers, and promises to give a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Sonic Mania and Project Sonic 2017. Dive into the world of Sonic the Hedgehog in this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at both Sonic Mania and the upcoming Sonic 2017! With presenters from SEGA and Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka, this panel will answer questions about both games, showcase a new reveal for each title, and will discuss Sonic’s resurgence in the world of gaming since the reveal of both games. Of course, with Sonic involved, who knows what other surprises might be in store?
The panel will be held on March 16th from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. And while previously SXSW Gaming was free to attend, tickets will be required for this year’s event. While last year’s Sonic panel at SXSW was live streamed, Sega has not yet announced whether or not they’ll do a live stream again this year.
