Sonic Lost World is right around the corner for those that don’t own a Wii U – trusting of course that they do have a PC and a Steam account – and it seems that SEGA is pulling off at least one official community event this year after all. Summer of Sonic it ain’t, but SEGA Europe is going to be hosting a relatively small community open day at London’s Loading Bar on Saturday, October 31st.
The event starts at 14:00, finishes at 20:00 and you must be at least 18 to enter – alcohol will be present, this being the Loading bar after all. Visitors will be able to play the new version of the game ahead of it’s general release on November 2nd, as well as get the chance to meet Dan Sheridan, the new European community manager. There’ll be a chance to win prizes, presumably from some form of challenge involving the game itself, though this isn’t clarified. The first fifty people to turn up to the event will receive goodie bags, apparently again featuring that Sonic hat. Yes, the same one as Summer of Sonic 2011.

I’m starting to wonder how many of those Sonic hats were or are still being made.
The once Wii U exclusive Sonic Lost World is coming to PC through Steam. It’ll be released on November 2nd and you’ll get the excellent Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed if you pre-purchase it. The NiGHTS themed DLC will be included, though it seems doubtful that we’ll be getting the Nintendo-themed DLC as well. Not until it’s inevitably modded in anyway.
You can pre-purchase the game on Steam here for $29.99/£19.99/€27.99. The Steam description touts that it’ll have new features like 60 FPS gameplay (except it already was 60 FPS on Wii U… oops), HD resolution support, full gamepad and keyboard support, and all of the Steam features like achievements and cloud saving.
Really the most exciting potential feature is the one that isn’t listed: mods. Like with Sonic Generations, there’s the potential for various mods like character model swaps or improved graphics. So hopefully people will be making a decent amount of those.

It’s been a while since SEGA unleashed Sonic into the world of Yoshi’s Island to save the rainbow-hued miniature dinosaurs. For those of you who haven’t given in and traded your Wii U copies of Sonic Lost World, SEGA’s Aaron “Ruby Eclipse” Webber, aficionado of all things Sonic and Hatsune Miku, revealed ever so suddenly that their second Nintendo-themed DLC for the game is going live tomorrow for the ridiculously expensive price of free.
As hinted back in a Nintendo Direct, the second DLC is centered around the world of The Legend of Zelda, and Sonic takes the theme to heart by sporting the legendary iconic green tunic of Link. In stark contrast to most of Sonic Lost World‘s offerings, the level is quite vast and focuses much more on exploration than just running through the level like you’re trying to beat that blasted mailman to the Kokiri Forest.
Webber mentions that this level complements the Yoshi DLC’s ability to score lives rapidly by focusing more on amassing Flickies rapidly, the little birds required to get past certain roadblocks between levels, and that many little secrets are hidden throughout the stage.
It may be a bit too late for a chunk of Lost World’s Wii U‘s players to get much out of the DLC’s intended purpose, but the level of work that went into the level is certainly impressive. Perhaps a sign of things that can be done with the engine given proper motivation? Let’s hope so.
Now that the fires caused by Sonic Boom‘s unveiling have begun to simmer, SEGA’s financial report reveals Sonic Lost World did okay. The combination of both the Wii U and 3DS versions shipped a total of 640,000 units by Dec. 31, 2013, marking it as the company’s second most successful boxed title behind Football Manager 14.
The company noted however that, in the nine-month span of packaged software shipments, the consumer business side still did not return expected total sales numbers due to “a harsh market environment,” yielding only 6.31 million total games moved. Favorable performance was indicated for Phantasy Star Online 2 and mobile games such as PUYOPUYO Quest and CHAIN CHRONICLE.
The bulk of SEGA’s gain came not only from its Pachinko machines, but from selling investment securities and non-current assets. This garnered them a whopping 44.3 billion yen, or about $434 million. As a reminder, this is after factoring their 14 billion yen expense to purchase Index back in November.
While this may not seem like the most exciting news, it is at least good to see SEGA floating on some decent cash. Given the Wii U’s humdrum state the last year, Lost World‘s low return isn’t surprising. Perhaps Boom will prove more successful? Let’s just hope it includes a cameo from our new favorite purple mascot, Zazz.
Sonic Lost World for the 3DS is the latest in a recent trend of handheld Sonic games – while there was a long string of completely original Sonic titles, from many of the Game Gear titles all the way to the Advance and Rush series, the last couple have instead been downscaled versions of their console counterparts: Colors, Generations, and now Lost World. Why this is the case, I don’t know, because it will invariably result in comparing these games to their consistently better big brothers, and in every case they fall short, including this one. Which is tremendously worrisome, considering the Wii U version of the game didn’t exactly set a high bar to begin with.
Nintendo just announced on the latest Nintendo Direct that Sonic will be kicking Shy Guys and collecting Yoshi Eggs in a new downloadable zone based on Yoshi’s Island for Sonic Lost World. This cross-over is available on the Wii U eShop right now for free.
Also announced was that a second piece of Nintendo cross-over DLC will be released at a later date. Iwata hinted with a pun too terrible to mention that Sonic will be running around in a Legend of Zelda-themed world in the upcoming expansion.
