SEGA Holds a Sonic CD Fan Art Contest

With Sonic CD getting a re-release done by The Taxman next month, SEGA has started a fan-art contest with 50 prizes being given away in North America, Mexico and the United Kingdom each, so that makes 150 winners in total. The five best winners in each territory will get a copy of Sonic CD on XBLA, PSN or Steam and a copy of the Japanese soundtrack signed by Takashi Iizuka, Jun Senoue, Naofumi Hataya and Kazuyuki Hoshino, something any fan would appreciate. All the other winners will get the same except the soundtrack isn’t signed.

There are a few things you need to know before entering the contest: your submission needs to be related to Sonic CD. If it isn’t, your entry will not count and you’ve done all that work for nothing. It needs to be original, created by you and it can’t have appeared anywhere else, so it can’t be something you’ve already put on websites like DeviantArt or on forums, and you can’t show it off before the contest ends. You also need to be 13 years or older to take part in the contest. The deadline is 10:00 AM PT/18:00 GMT November 29th, 2011.

To find out how you can enter the contest and for more information regarding the rules go to the SEGA Blog.

Second Sonic CD Trailer Commands Changing The Future

With Sonic Generations dropping in less than two weeks, sights are beginning to move to the next point for Sonic as he hits the Past signpost and revisits a more simple time where Time Stones, Metal Sonic and Rosie the Rascal where some of his bigger headaches.

Sega released a new trailer for Sonic CD, powered by Christian “The Taxman” Whitehead’s Retro Engine, showing off how the game looks in its new wide screen perspective as Quartz Quadrant’s International Present music jams on in the background under a random announcer. Not much more to say outside of it’s Sonic CD as you truly remember it, only with a wider perspective and a different soundtrack for the U.S. folks.

Before jumping the gun on the Sonic 4 mention, please remember that Sega’s own Sonic Digital Brand Manager Ken Balough clarified that Sonic CD‘s story will be a pivotal point in Sonic 4: Episode II, especially given the Metal Sonic nod after completing Episode I with all seven Chaos Emeralds in tow.

Sonic CD is scheduled to boom onto Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, PC Download services, and the iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7 app stores later this year.

Sonic Generations Demo Live Tomorrow, Expires In 20 Days

To those of you who patiently waited and didn’t get a chance to sample the demo at Sonic Boom for whatever reason, your waiting is over. Starting tomorrow, both Xbox Live and PSN will be receiving the demo to Sonic’s upcoming adventure.
Unlike the Sonic Boom build patrons got to sample, this version will only feature Classic Sonic’s version of Green Hill Zone Act 1, omitting Modern Sonic entirely.

One small catch: the demo will only be available for 20 days. After that, the demo will be removed from the services and downloaded copies will expire. Whether this is an anti-hacking measure or a way to build up hype by releasing a second demo with modern Sonic remains to be seen.

Fox Xbox Live users, the same rule as other demos applies in that Gold level users will be getting the demo first with Silver level peons waiting until next week. Don’t think burning demos to a disc works, as members on our forum are saying that no longer works.

Demo aside, Sega will also release a 20th Anniversary Bundle consisting of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Sonic Adventure (and its DX add-on), and the Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 dynamic theme on PSN for $19.99/£13.99/€17.99. A similar deal is expected for Xbox Live users. The offer also expires on July 12.

Sonic Teaser Video Shows… Classic Sonic?

Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic team up in the next Sonic game.

At 9 a.m. EST, Sega showed off the 50-second teaser video on their Sonic The Hedgehog fanpage on Facebook, offering that it’s a teaser of the next major Sonic title. [UPDATE: Video after the jump. Thanks, Twimfy!]

The footage begins with the green-eyed modern Sonic running along through a very white, lightly textured version of Green Hill Zone in 3D, going through pipes and shuttle loops until flying through the air and being joined by his classic chubby companion.

The two then run along side by side and we’re treated to a loose release date of “Coming 2011” and confirmation that the game will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, including online support in some capacity.

Although it does not confirm a title, it’s very likely to hold the name Sonic Generations, especially with how recently the domains were registered. Did your guess on our poll from last night come true?

Sonic 1 Hits PlayStation Store For Everyone

Add one more to the number of ports this game has.

While people enrolled in PlayStation Plus have had the game (for free) for over a month, the game has now been deemed worthy of release to the lowly free peons of the PSN in exchange for $4.99 out of your PlayStation Wallet.

What will you find? Just Sonic 1 as you remember it, only now with a new menu system that prevents using the level select code but allows for savestates to be made at the player’s leisure.

In other words, it’s a port of the Xbox Live Arcade “Sega Vintage Collection” port of Sonic 1, with all the pluses and minuses (moreso minuses) well intact.

If you’re visiting this site, you’ve likely played this game in some sort of capacity. This one’s purely for the diehards who want Sonic 1 on every system they own (legally) or for those who somehow missed on the multiple other ports of the game. May I suggest just picking Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection instead?

Sonic 4: Episode I Priced, Dated

Despite other sites reporting a lockdown on Sonic 4 discussion here, well, this certainly warrants coverage, no?

According to IGN, Sonic 4 is homing in to consoles as early as the early half of next month.

  • Apple’s iDevices will be the first to get the game on Oct. 7, though no price was confirmed at this time.
  • Next up, the Wii will receive the game on Oct. 11 for 1500 Nintendo fake money, translating to $15/£10 / €13/ AU$20.
  • PSN receives the game on Oct. 12 for $14.99 / £9.99 / €12.99 / AU$19.95
  • Xbox Live Arcade will see minecart goodness for 1200 monopoly dollar points on Oct. 13

Pricey? Surprised at how soon the game’s hitting? Sound off; don’t worry, your comments won’t actually be censored.

Sonic Adventure homing in on PSN

Keeping in line with that leaked document last year that detailed plans to bring Dreamcast titles to Sony’s PlayStation Network service, an ESRB filing shows that Sonic Adventure will also be making its way to the PlayStation 3.

The Xbox 360 is also listed, though its existence has been known about (unofficially) for quite a while. Sega has yet to officially reveal the titles arriving on the two services.

While the 360 version is based off the PC port of Sonic Adventure DX, it’s unknown if the PS3 version will be the same, though extremely likely. However, the rating lists entries for both versions of the game.

What’s your take? Will you be picking this up if the price is right or has the title aged unfavorably for you?

Sonic 4 Episode 1 Delayed to Q4 2010; iPhone Port Confirmed

Today Sega announced that the Episode 1 release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been moved to late 2010, with the extra dev time being spent on “tuning and balancing” the game. Nothing more concrete than this window has been announced.

The press release that was released today officially confirms the iPhone & iPod Touch release of the platform that was discovered from the offcial website’s assets earlier in the year. A video is due to be released after tonight’s episode of GameSpot’s On The Spot feature, which will go up at 10pm UTC/GMT (i.e. just over half an hour from this post).

“SEGA is incredibly happy at the overwhelmingly positive response to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I  from both press and fans around the world, and wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible,” says the official press release on the Sonic Blognik blog. “With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, SEGA has decided to extend the development of the game, and will now release Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I in the latter half of 2010. The additional time will allow the Development Team to focus on ensuring overall high-quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands, and ultimately providing fans with an unrivalled classic Sonic feel.”

In addition, a new Sonic 4 trailer has been released featuring footage from the first level in the game, Splash Hill Zone:

As you may recall, Retro & Stadium exclusively broke the news of this upcoming announcement 3 days ago. Stick with Sonic Retro for future developments on the Q4 2010 release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1.

UPDATE: According to Gamespot’s On the Spot, the iPhone release of Sonic 4 will sport two exclusive levels not present in any of the console releases! No specific details on that yet, but we’ll let you know.
