Taxman and Stealth celebrate Sonic & Knuckles’ 20th anniversary with a Sonic 3 & Knuckles proof of concept

Today marks the 20th anniversary of SEGA’s Sonic & Knuckles, and to celebrate, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remastered developer Christian Whitehead shared a proof of concept prototype from the Taxman & Stealth personal vaults featuring Sonic 3 & Knuckles running on the Retro Engine. Of course, this is presented unofficially, so don’t jump to the conclusion that a Sonic 3 & Knuckles remastered is on the way anytime soon. Still, awesome to see that they’ve done work on the much requested title, even in an unofficial capacity. The Taxman himself shared this link in our forums, stating that “this isn’t an official announcement of any Sega project, nor to we intend to work on this as a fan-project. It’s simply a proof of concept from our vaults that has been kept to our chests for some time.”
You can learn more about the technical side of the project in Stealth’s latest blog post!

Man, if this is only a proof of concept that means they aren’t working on an official port. The port looks pretty sweet tho. Too bad Sega don’t want the port right now.

Couldn’t the Sonic fan communities organize some kind of petition or fan effort to convince Sega to contract with Taxman and Stealth and make this a reality? I guess I don’t know how well the previous remakes did but they were in top charts on the iOS App Store so I have to imagine they did decently enough to warrant the final and best game of the series to be made. What can we do to make this happen?

I could still happen, just give it time. Remember that Sonic CD was originally just a Proof of Concept, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUHsVgRL_DU

If they’ve had Taxman and Stealth create ports of CD, 1 and 2 in that order, then it’s only a matter of time once the licensing and other factors are dealt with unless SEGA hates money. And I doubt they do.

Having already purchased 1, 2, and CD numerous times on various consoles – it only makes sense for me to purchase the F**K out of this little number.

Amazing, considering that Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) has a total engine rework, and that it has a lot of other things the others didn’t have (And honestly… WANT!)

forgot to mention that they should add music from Sonic & Knuckles: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Remix. Seeing that Sonic 3 Complete fan game doesn’t have it.
