Sonic Boom Behind the Scenes Video Released

It’s not often that we get a look at how Sonic games are made, so it’s surprising that SEGA suddenly released a behind the scenes video for Sonic Boom. While there’s not much new info, it does show a lot of new concept art for the game and a couple of voice recording sessions for the TV show. There’s also one very small bit of new gameplay that you will probably miss if you blink.
The cast for the game and TV show was also revealed, which confirms that Orbot and Cubot will be present in this spin-off. It also shows that Tails now has a new voice actress, with Colleen Villard replacing Kate Higgins. This isn’t the first time Villard voiced a Sonic character, as she is also the current voice of the beloved Charmy the Bee.

Wow, I actually laughed at Knuckles’ lines. This is promising. In fact, this Knuckles strongly reminds me of Gonard from the Nicktoons Network show Kappa Mikey. Something about Dr. Eggman just screams Dr. Drakken from Kim Possible too. WHY DIDN’T THEY REPLACE AMY’S VOICE ACTOR?!?!? Of all the characters, I’m pretty sure people gave Amy the most complaints for her new voice actor in Generations and Lost World, but they change Tails’ instead? How SEGA? I’m not saying Tails’ new voice actor is bad though, I’m saying they gave the new voice actor to the wrong character! But still, this is looking ultra promising! 😀 (I am a bit worried though about that short clip with Sonic and friends JOGGING through what I’m guessing is the hub world. What was up with that?)

If this was reddit, I would upvote your comment, as it generally includes those thoughts I would have contributed to the discussion.

Thank you for agreeing with my points! If you want, you can just copy and paste what I said. As Kim Possible would say, “It’s no big.” 😉

Amy did sound a bit awkward but it didn’t bother me much. But I DO agree with you on Knuckles. He seems pretty funny, and I think his voice, his knew design, his dialogue suit his character.
I always thought that Sonic and Knuckles were the kind of “bros” that just go and do stupid shit together, while Sonic and Tails were the kind of “bros” that would go bike-riding and eat icecream together. And by the way Knuckles reacted to Sonic’s offer about the rock, it seems close to what I had in mind.

Is that Taxman’s Sonic 1 I see in that video?

Please have the game on Angel Island, Please have the game on Angel Island…
But seriously, this looks like it could be good. I really liked that “laser” thing and the whipped cream line, although I hope it makes sense in context…

I *need* Sonic to do comedy, that ultimate measure of wit. I need to know that one of my favorite fictional universes is capable of making me think and laugh, because for as long as I can remember, I’ve just had to picture in my head what potential I think this series has.
    “Sophisticated storytelling”, I hope so.

…Excuse me but did Iizuka just say, unlike other Sonic games, you’ll be able to experience a story and world?
Please tell me that’s just a mistranslation of “Players will advance through a storyline and world /different from other Sonics/” and not what I think he’s saying. Else this is one of the dumbest things I heard come from his mouth and he’s said a /lot./

Even if it’s a mistranslation, almost everything Iizuka says is PR speak. Don’t see it as much more than “the game will have a focus on story and the world it takes place in”.

Why Sega Why? Why did y’all replace Kate Higgins as the voice of Tails for Sonic Boom? In my honest opinion, She did a damn good job of doing Tails.
Oh well, Colleen sounds close to Kate’s Tails voice though.

Ha ha ha, those little dialogue teases we got for the show were great, and indeed sound very promising. I’m now more interested in the show than ever before.
Game sounds ultra promising too. They all discussed things I’ve been longing to see in a Sonic game, so I hope they actually deliver.
Approve of Amy’s spunkier character, but not the voice acting, which now seems out of place in addition to being…well…dislikable. Reminds me too much of Minnie Mouse, to be honest.

    >realistic ugly ass character redesign
    >open world
    >character tag gameplay
    >emphasis on story
    >development studio is a total stranger to sonic games
    Hello Sonic 2014.

Realistic? I don’t know about that. I mean, Sonic still doesn’t really look like a hedgehog and Knuckles doesn’t have 3 penises.
Also, a studio being a total stranger to Sonic games doesn’t mean that they can’t make good games. There are a lot of good people at Big Red Button.

Sure, they can make good games. But not good Sonic games.

If you wanted a good “Sonic game”, then you haven’t really had one since Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I probably disagree with you on what makes a Sonic game good and specially on the key element of previous megadrive games.

How come there’s 3 or more people that can do Tails’ voice and not feel different at all?!

I’m starting to really dig Robotnik’s new design. It’s more straightforward than Adventure’s redesign, with elements of a more cartoony side. It’s fresh, yet it fits Robotnik well.
Tails, I think, looks younger, and his forehead bangs have more personality now – I always hated the more jagged anime styling of his hair.
I kind of understand the intention behind Sonic design, and in particular I like the idea of a scarf/ascot thing, because it would allow them to hide the connection point between Sonic’s body and head, which never really works in 3D. Plus, actually *using* his brow and eyelids and mouth in facial expression is key to getting his personality across, something the games painfully avoid.

Back on the good old horrible SEGA forums I started a topic for “Hype train: Sonic Boom edition!” featuring everyone who requested it drawn crudely in MS paint.
