Sonic X-treme Meets Mario Galaxy in This Sonic Lost World Debut Trailer (Update)

Update: Screenshots of the Wii U and 3DS version and a preview with loads of details have been uploaded to IGN. The preview can be read here, the screenshots can be found below.

IGN just uploaded the debut trailer for Sonic Lost World, showing what the six guardians look like (surprise: they’re evil aliens!), but more importantly the new gameplay style. This isn’t just more of the same of what was seen in Sonic Unleashed, Colours and Generations. This also adds elements from Super Mario Galaxy and the cancelled Sonic X-treme into the mix.

Also note-able is that the game has a new beautiful plasticine-like style. Those who have wanted an incredibly stylized Sonic game (like me) will probably be very pleased by how this turned out. In addition, Flickies are back. Sonic Lost World will be out this fall exclusively on Wii U and 3DS.

Looks good, I like that they’re moving away from trying to make Sonic games dark and moody. It really suits being colourful and cartoony much better.

I hope they don’t overdo that crazy spinning camera stuff, though. It made me feel sick in Mario Galaxy

Sonic hasn’t been dark and moody for YEARS. Like wasn’t 06 the last time?

    • Reply

meta, I mean Sonic Unleashed definitely had some moments for sure.

Sonic is dark and moody? I wish.

    This is… It’s just that….

    I like this. A LOT.

    Arg, Nintendo exclusive.
The 3DS version isn’t going to look this good and it’d be the only game I play on the Wii U ever. My Wii’s collecting dust as it is and that console was a commercial success.

Wow- this actually looks like a Sonic game! A good one! No more angsty, Shadow/Silver crap and instead vivid colours and crazy levels. The aliens look ridiculous though- like they were the first thing an intern at Pixar scrawled on a hankie.

Shame it’s only on Nintendo consoles though as I don’t have any. Also it would’ve been good to have classic Sonic back as modern Sonic doesn’t gel all that well with the old school stylings.

    Okay, Sega.

    Now you’re getting somewhere.

    Looks pretty cool!
I only have a 3DS so far so I hope that version isn’t just a 2d game like Sonic Generations was on the 3DS.

    • Reply

Same here. Sonic Generations could’ve easily been 3D on the 3DS, but Dimps seemed to stick with the 2D path. Also I wonder if Dimps will be involved with this title also, seeing that it’s also coming out on a handheld.

IGN says it’s gonna be full 3D.

    Color me impressed.
No, wait, that’d have been clever if this were Sonic Colors we were talking about. 😛

Well color me impressed regardless, this is quite a risky move but one that looks like it could have a huge payoff, the stages look like a ton of fun.

    Eggman, Anyone?

IGN says a team-up is in order “For the first time” SA2? The Dark Brotherhood? <–Don't exist.

    !! welp
    This is it!! : )
it took a long time but everything in between was worth allowing this to exist. The one missing piece in 3d sonic has always been the camera and now it looks to have transformed into a camera as intuitive as the S_CD animation sequences. : ) <3 a brilliant new beginning! Just for fun imagine what realms/zones like this would be like with tails or knuckles in future games! : ) <3

I have the strangest boner right now. 😉

I can’t wait to actually play this game so bad! My Wii U needed an awesome title to play on right now, and I’m interested in that they’re trying to revisit the ideas they’ve scrapped from the cancelled Sonic XTreme.

It’s a shame that they are once again giving poor ol’ Robotnik the boot and putting him onto the sidelines rather than allowing the evil doctor to be the villain we know he can be. I am disappointed with Sega and their choice to make six aliens the villain rather than Dr. Robotnik.

    • Reply

Eggman has been the villain for almost every Sonic game now. Them using different villains really isn’t a bad thing (though these are kind of generic). Besides that, Eggman probably is in the game because there are badniks.

    • Reply

Eggman isn’t getting the boot. He supposedly tried to use “The Deadly Six” to his own advantage, and they betrayed him, so he’s allied with Sonic in this game.

Hmm… Don’t really know how I feel about this.

I forgot already that Sega went exclusive with Nintendo… I still can’t let that go, and I just want to forget again…

That aside bravo, Sonic’s really starting to look fun again. 🙂
But now I have to play Sonic on a Nintendo console. This just isn’t right. 😐

I can’t believe people on YouTube are already bitching about the game. Jesus Christ, its the first fucking trailer!

    Is that… somewhat classic-style gameplay?!

Also, hooray for Flickies being back.

    Hooray, Sonic meets Mirrors Edge!

    • Reply

Hey! Someone still remembers that game! 😀

Looks Great! At least i have a 3DS. XD

  • Reply

Hmm. Looks cool. Though I’m honestly sorta hoping those gameplay shots aren’t entirely finished. The lighting and graphics don’t match up to previous games.

I don’t care as much about graphics, but seeing that this doesn’t seem to look nearly as good as, let’s say Sonic Generations or Sonic Unleashed, I’m not entirely sure what to think.

Overall, though, this actually looks really nice. Yet another reason for me to get a Wii U.

Also, I like how they used the “Cinema” track by Benny Benassi in here. 😛

    • Reply

I wouldn’t be surprised if they made it less graphically demanding to make the game run at 60 fps.

    • Reply

      That would make sense, yes.

  • Reply

Well, of course there are 6 guardians. How else can you explain the creation of the 6 chaos emeralds in Sonic 1. “Hint Hint” This does look really cool. I love how every person I talked to says this is a crossover of Sonic X-treme and Super Mario Galaxy… Now I just need to steal a Wii U and I’m set. LOL

What the… what did I just see. This looks confusing as all FO8!. But It has my attention… What is this

  • Reply

It reminds connection of Sonic 3D Blast : Flickies Island and Sonic X-Treme Camera Gimmick Mixes also linked with Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 . For me this game is mixed renovation of Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic X-Treme . I love this game . I can’t wait to play demo and full version I’m serious right now .

Other than the fact it is more of a rip off of Super Mario Galaxy than Sonic Colors was (which was still fun), I think it is going to be a great game. I am a bit disappointed because I saw the picture and I thought, “yay, sonic is going back to the way it used to be, with bright colors and hes protecting Mobius and its going to feel like im playing old sonic but with more speed and modern sonic and 3D level design” and I’m sad to see that its ripping off mario galaxy. I still think it will be fun, though.

Although the style is certainly distinct (albeit Nintendo and Sega are collaborating, so perhaps it’s deliberate), I still find it funny that people like to go “GALAXY RIPOFF” when technically Sonic did the ‘looping areas with self-contained gravity zones’ gimmick first.

Except that was in one of the worst levels of Sonic Adventure 2.

    Wow, they actually remember X-Treme!

    • Reply

X-Treme makes me cry. This game…:D

I hope the 3DS one actually looks OK. New Super Mario Bros 2 looked pretty good, and Generations looked OK. I can’t afford a Wii U AND a $40-$60 game for it!

(my WordPress account isn’t working. Hm.)

I am looking VERY forward to this game. So far, in the trailer, it seems like that’s a test level. Even though, it looks very nice and bright, even like a comic book. I have been told that lost world MAY be a collection of scrapped ideas. The monsters, Sonic X-treme gameplay, and world themes may be an example of that.

The gameplay, like I said, it like Sonic X-treme. It may make VERY good use of the 3D’s and Wii U’s gyroscope. And finally, no awkward story. No half-assed plot-important recolors, no world-destroying monsters, no gimmicks, just good ol’ plain as a bagel Sonic the Hedgehog. Thank you.

Oh, and being released on Wii U and 3DS only? I don’t care. PS3, 360, and PC fanboys, you had games like HD Generations, 06, and Sonic 4 ep 2 ALLLLLLLL to yourselves. So suck it up and buy a used Wii U or 3DS.

  • Reply

Haha, I’m pretty smug I have both a 3DS and Wii U now. NYAH 😛
Plus this game looks as bright and colorful as Sonic Heroes did so I like they’re bringing back the childish aspect to the series.

Of course, the most epic looking game I’ve seen in weeks has to be for two consoles I don’t and never plan to own.

  • Reply

It’s like a mix between Generations and Adventure with a bit of Mario Galaxy and a sprinkle of Colors.

  • Reply

Ah YES! Im lovin the details here, anybody else notice that Sonic running animation? FIGURE 8 AAW YEAH!! And the boost panels? classic Chemical Plant style! 😀 And the Homing Attack looks MUCH smoother. But I would also have to agree that the aliens look a tad silly. But hey, if the gameplay is great, then I don’t mind 😀

    Sonic Xtreme: Good Edition XD

No seriously that’s what first came to my head when I saw it earlier this morning, looks like I’m getting a WiiU!

  • Reply

Wow. This game is RETRO. Sonic X-Treme, the return of Flickys, Classic Badniks return for the 3rd straight main game, And even the Peel-Out is back!

You got my attention SEGA, but for you to get $400 from me, you better get at least all 8’s or Above.

    • Reply

The WII U is only 240 at target, the black version is only 349. You will not have to pay $400! Why do people keep saying that

  • Reply

    …I don’t know how I feel about this game. Looks too… weird…

And I’m surprised no ones complaining about Tubular Green Hill Clone.

    • Reply

Because at this point it should be obvious that Green Hill esque levels are just parts of the same trope in different location in the Sonic universe. Nothing to butthurt over.

  • Reply

Only interested in it now because I wondering how the hell you’re supposed to control this stuff. And where are sonic’s friends? Aren’t tey supposed to be playable?

    • Reply

According to IGN, Sonic’s friends won’t be playable, but they will appear in the plot. As for how to control it, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  • Reply

YES! The 3DS version is not the average Sonic Rush-esc game! It’s a dream come true!!!

please tell me the 3ds version is a port of the wii u version

  • Reply

Y’know, instead of whining, you can always RENT the Wii U and the game, right?

    • Reply

There are still places that rent out consoles? I remember before they all shut down, Blockbuster did that in the U.S. but then stopped because people would wreck the machines. Can’t trust customers to manage a $300-$500 piece of equipment when most can’t even take care of a simple DVD.

Sexy. Nice to see our favorite hedgehog’s firmly on his way up, the last few games have been great [Generations, Colors, most of Unleashed], and it doesn’t seem like the quality is going to drop. I’m hype.

The 3DS version of this better not suck like Generations 3DS though. Ideally, it’d be a straight port, but then there’d be no reason for me to ever even look at the Wii U version, haha.

  • Reply

I’m entirely neutral; I’m not sure how I want to feel about this. There’s only one downside I’ve seen so far, though: again ONLY Sonic is playable. When are we finally going to be able to play as the others again..?

Wouldn’t mind hearing a remix of Space Queens in this…

Gameplay looks solid, and yet again Sega and I seem to be thinking similar things (I was thinking to myself not so long ago that Sega ought to try the idea behind Sonic X-Treme again). Questioning what kind of role Eggman might have in this, if any at all (Yeah, there’s badniks, but that actually doesn’t confirm or deny anything IMO. They could just be there for old time’s sake), but after that all I’m left wondering about is what kind of story this’ll have. I’m not asking for anything dark of angsty (though…I will admit…I am kinda missing it now) but it would be nice for the game to have an actual, decent-sized, plot. More plot than either Generations or Colors had at least. Maybe something more along the lines of the plot for Unleashed, except more lighthearted, probably…

Please don’t Kill off Eggman, SEGA :'(…

The story ALWAYS begins… with who’s gonna win. Knowing the dangers that lie within.

Looks like a nice adaptation of some SM Galaxy elements. Cool style!
