[UPDATE: It’s now on the Google Play store.]

Ever wondered when Taxman and Stealth’s Sonic 1 Retro Engine remaster would be made available? Next week? Next month?! Well, in fact it is actually hitting both the iOS and Android as soon as today or tomorrow depending on your region and platform. Most regions should be seeing the iOS port as soon as right now, or at least tomorrow. As for Android, according to Taxman on the Retro Forums he says, “Thursday 16th PST for Android, US & Canada so you’ll have to wait a bit longer sorry.”

In the meantime, there has been some light shed on some of the differences and new features the port has. Such as Time Attack modes, remastered music, spin dash feature, slightly updated boss patterns, smoother motion in the Special Stages, and unlockable characters? Perhaps there may be more surprises in store, but the wait for this release is just about over, depending on where you are.

Check out some of the features shown below with images taken from staff member TimmiT.

This is the equivalent to all the awesome things in the world. This has to be the biggest highlight of the year considering classic Sonic titles. Come on, Tails and Knuckles as playable characters? This just SCREAMS must get! It is the biggest achievement Sonic 1 has ever reached!
Plus, I believe that if you live in the northeast region of America you must wait until tomorrow for the app.

I am so glad I’m getting this as a free update, I almost thought I’d wasted money on something that doesn’t work right but now I get an amazing version that won’t run slow on my 4th Gen iPod Touch 😀

Oh it’d be incredible to have Amy as DLC later on (from E-122 Psy’s hacks)

Free for those who purchase the whole trilogy. :V

Just updated my iOS version. This port is amazing. I hope they give this treatment to Sonic 2 and Sonic 3&K. This port oozes with respect and love for the classic Sega games. This is a huge deal.

It’s AMAZING. The original iPhone port reminded me of that excuse for a port on the GBA. Now, it’s pure gold. I find it better than the original, actually.

I should probably hide in my titanium crate now before make anybody angry.

Just putting a thank-you post here to Taxman and Sega for putting in a 3D audio implementation (for perspective, this is better than crossfeed and Dolby Headphone for those who would understand) for headphone audiophiles like myself. That is not to blantantly ignore the plethora of other features has left me in constant awe and shock for the last hour–extra characters, region settings, worldwide language support (até português, pessoal!), a slick, minimalistic and yet organic menu system. Hat’s off to Taxman and Sega for making the best Sonic game re-release in history, period!

Bought it immediately for my android. Perhaps a PC version like Sonic CD? CD made sense since it had a PC version before, but I’d still like to see this there too.

I can’t find it on Play. Hm.

Please Taxman and Stealth make your Sonic 1 Version on PC Steam , XBLA and PSN ?

I found a problem in the credits for Knuckles which stops you viewing the rest of the credits. It’s in the Labyrinth Zone part where the characters are being pulled along by the water current, but with Knuckles, he just dies on the spikes when he lets go, and then loops round with no music continuously.

    Is this going on Amazon?

Until Taxman’s Sonic 1 won’t be on PC Steam , XBLA and PSN you can download the best android emulator called : “BlueStacks” . You can just buy this game app on Google Play and play it with that on your PC.
