Sonic Winter Adventures Gets First Public Release

Sonic 1 hacks are a dime-a-dozen these days. This makes getting excited about them a little difficult if nothing more than a few palettes are edited and zones are sloppily renamed to fit their new color schemes. That said, it’s never a dull day when someone steps up and delivers a new Sonic 1 experience with new boss enemies, moves for Sonic, and more.

Enter Russian Sonic hacker vladikcomper and his project Sonic Winter Adventures. In similar stead to Sonic 1 Megamix, Adventures enables Sonic to enable the full power of blast processing  with the addition of light speed dash, super peel out, the spin dash, and even the homing attack. Let’s give the purists a little time to seethe. … All right then!

While the level variety isn’t very boastful, vladikcomper laments, the amount of work put in so far is a very commendable effort and definitely worth playing though. Some of his bosses make specific use of Sonic’s new age moves meaning you can’t just throw Sonic’s body into Eggman eight times and waltz over to the Egg Prisonpod so easily.

So what are you waiting for? Download this bad boy and give it a spin yourself! And don’t think that beating the game means it’s over. vladik teases that more playthroughs unlock more things.

Another awesome hack, but yet it still doesn’t amuse me. I don’t find anything that differs it from Sonic Megamix’ gameplay and etc. I only see Winter-themed levels. No highlights.
    Sorry.

Bravo, you watched the first 30 seconds. Try playing it now.

Well, look at that. I’m interested in Sonic hacks again.

Looks great! Can’t wait to try it. (:

Also, lol @ the “Icecap is now playing in your head manually” tag. I love it when you guys add funny or fun tags that no one is going to be able to search related material by, it defeats the purpose and as such is humoring. XD

    It was ok.

I was kind of disappointed with Marble Zone.
But I can only blame myself with hoping to see a watery-ice version of Marble rather than it being a recolor.

Still, it was original level design, so it’s a plus in that regard.

Sonic felt a bit stiff at times (spindash and peel out) I found myself abusing the Air-dash much more.

A boss per act was cool, but eath taking 8 hits and above is just overkill.

I’d love to play more, but it’d be nice if we get something out of the WINTER theme than just a name and palette swaps. Though I repeat, original level design was a plus.

I know what you mean. When you jump after rolling you can’t control yourself in midair. It can lead to some frustrating deaths 🙁

It’s a good display of hacking skills, but in my opinion the level design could use some work.

That said, it has some great original boss design. It’s worth playing for the bosses alone.

I found the boss of FIZ Act 3 to be waaay too cheap. Just my opinion. The fact that it got invinciblity while running is just not fair!

    Is there a Mac version?

It’s not available on inferior platforms. Sorry. =/

It’s just a Genesis ROM and is therefore playable on any platform that had a readily available Genesis/MD emulator. Which is every platform ever.

Looks nice will try it out, I wonder why don’t we get more Sonic 3 hacks though is it that difficult to hack it? I love the physics there and art style plus 3 playable characters!

The speed of the game and the boss battles are so awesome!

Definitely a step in the right direction. I’m happy to see such innovative boss fights that I never could have even imagined! Very nice work, and if you improved the level layout I’d give it a solid A.

I have to ask though, was anyone else as impressed as me by that SEGA logo? It startled me when I loaded it up.

Yeah, that SEGA logo was pretty cool.

Personally, I think either the stages should have been made harder or the bosses made easier, since as of now the difficulty is all over the place.

Bosses need to be nerfed and this hack DESERVE new art instead of simple recolor, i know it is hard to do, but it need to be done in order to transform this hack into great game.

The story – Eggman build freezing factory machine and freeze the whole southern island. Sonic is here to return things to normal.

Here are couple of themes for levels:
    1) Blizzard hill – for this one there could still be recolored palm trees and flowers in order to show what happened to Sonic’s world.
    2) As Ecchi already said some ice and water.
    3) Christmas eve – fir-trees will lights on it, eggman’s face snowmans, some salute – like in Sonic 4 ep 2’s white park
    4) Ice Quadrant
    5) Frozen City
    6) Cold factory – you appear inside a giant Eggman’s ice factory, which is a reason why everithing was frozen.
    7) ending is nearly the same as original one – Sonic jump off the exploding ice factory back into blizzard hill, now here is explosion on the back and it becomes warm (green hill pallete) again.

Feels like something dimps might make after having too much coffee, springs and dashpads EVERYWHERE.

I LOVE the level design! I hope you include multiple paths to get to the end of a stage too! Also all the secret powerups are awesome I’m still finding new things. Boss battles are good too. There is a bug or issue where anytime Sonic rolls and jumps you can’t influence your direction until you hit the ground. Please fix this. Until then I give this a 4.9999/5 I need that rolling issue fixed. 😉

What is the name of that song that plays in the background of the trailer? I can’t get it out of my head!

Sampled it today. I was glad about what I got to play. Was really impressed with some of the boss fights.
