Well, by the looks of this screenshot they using Sonic 2 special stage idea. Well, least we won’t have to worry Tails hiting the bombs and make you lose rings because theres online coop.

glad to see the Sonic 2 Special Stage back, but why oh why is there a freaking timer in the lower right? The remake of the Sonic 1 Special Stage for Episode 1 was bad enough, please don’t make this Special Stage even worse.

What I’m thinking bmhedgehog is that, like the Special Stage in Ep I, this version is altered as well. In this case, I’m thinking you’d have a certain amount of time to run around a looping circuit and collect the required ring total.

I believe that the bottom-right timer is designed for timing purposes, in which we’ll get a score bonus and Time Attack capabilities, but we may indeed get timed sections. However, do realise that the original concept involved sections in which to collect a certain amount of Rings.
