Sonic 4: Episode 2 Concept Art: Week 4

It’s that time again! Friday has once again made its merry way, and what do we get? More Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 concept art! We were spoiled a bit last week, seeing as we got two days in a row of conceptual Sonic the Hedgehog imagery thrown at us, so this week Sega has decided to scale things back to normal, with the black and white/color combo of the main attraction at their official blog, with the Facebook side dish. So, what do we get today?

Seems not every badnik we’ll be fighting off will be original. If that fish looks familiar, just one glance at his name will tell you why. Meet Chop Chop (or simply Piranha if you want to be Japanese for a day), the blue fish that would love to rush at you back in Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s Aquatic Ruin Zone. Unless he’s learned how to fly, you can expect to trend some water in the next installment, so those who have a fear of the drowning music best get prepared now. He has been slightly redesigned since we last saw him, with the brand new addition of eyes.

The bonus piece of art is simply being called the “Flip Platform,” so make of that what you will. Yes, that bottom does kinda look like a bumper. But who yet knows if it is, or simply something interesting to look at while running through the game? I’m sure we’ll find out how it all comes together at some point.

I think Sega mistakened a screw for an eye when redesigning chop chop~ So I guess thius confirms that aquatic ruin screenshot we saw a while ago in onm

I hope it will be a ice level but that flip platform makes me think it will be a aquatic ruin copy.

From what I could tell, a “Flip Platform” could function pretty much any way possible – a trick platform which flips upon “contact” and makes you fall down, a timed platform that flips after a few seconds or every time you jump it flips (similar to a mechanic in Super Mario Sunshine with red/blue flipping tiles which one of them was activated at a time and the other would be activated upon jump – returning in Super Mario 3D Land as is and previously in Super Mario Galaxy 2 by using the Spin to change platforms). The last thing I can think of is that it has something to do with what’s on the bottom – if it’s flipped, you hit it and it flips over allowing you to stand on it, or if it’s regular side up and you’re below it you can TRAP yourself in there (unless it’s a puzzle-like thing where the bounce (assuming it is higher than regular jumping) is the only way you can get to a platform to continue, for example).

Um, does anybody really care about enemy design? How about some level artwork?

…or some gameplay footage showing the game doesn’t suck? I’m not being stung again (again)- episode 1 wasn’t worth 1200 points- I purchased it when it was reduced for half price and still felt ripped off.

Dude, it WILL be better in terms of gameplay. Ken said that the physics were fixed and that there will be no uncurling. It won’t suck. That, I assure you.
