First Look At Sonic CD In The Wild

I don’t know how many people were aware that Gamestop was making their own gaming tablet until someone noticed that Sonic the Hedgehog CD was being included for free on it. I know I certainly didn’t, but then again I don’t really pay all that much attention to the tablet scene. Well, the tablets were meant to be released today, and already the demo units are up and running. Soon enough all the juicy details of this port will be up on YouTube. And by soon enough, I mean starting right now.

YouTube user Spindash54 woke up bright and early, deciding to record footage from his nearest GameStop with his trusty cell phone. While there is the same footage of Palmtree Panic we’ve all seen, we get our first look at the snazzy new menus within the release. Pausing has never looked so good, my friends. And the main menu, along with an extras list? Yes, you can make out the return of D.A. Garden and the Visual Mode on there, but two more remain with the illustrious question mark. One is assuredly Miles “Tails” Prower, but the other? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

All I do know is that Christian Whitehead certainly isn’t unlockable. Look at his name scroll by. You certainly deserve it, Tax ol’ boy.

Oh man is that Brand-new World in your credits sequence oh man that is fancy.

It seems like it’s running significantly slow, but I’m so glad they fixed the Spin Dash animation.

Now to wait for the APK. I’ll buy it for sure when it comes out on other devices, but until then I can’t wait to play this on my touchpad.

Christian Whitehead, well done. Superb work, I am looking forward to getting my hands on this for the iPhone.

Any chance of doing S3&K for them next as “Sonic 3 Complete…?” I jest, of course. Congratulations – you deserve all the plaudits for this game.

The game is running 50gps. Is that normal?

Yeah… something is definitely weird. Either really slow, or really floaty.

It looks pretty good so far, but the jump seems super freaking floaty.

Now if we can only get the big whomper: Sonic 1, 2, 3&K combined into one game. 😛

That Japanese soundtrack is like a dream come true.

I’ll add on that I got a chance to try the game out today while doing errands. As you saw, the Sonic 2 style spindash is still in. The game doesn’t look so good on video, but it ran pretty smoothly on the tablet I was using. Not 60FPS smooth, but about 55-59 or an odd hiccup now and then.

Now, I’m no tablet gamer and the best of my touch screen capabilities regard flinging birds at structures and cutting up fruit, so I found the controls a bit annoying. That said, there wasn’t any latency issue, so Sonic jumped right when commanded to.

The whole game is available there, as one of the save files was up to Tidal Tempest. There are about five or six slots for save files. The rest of interest is already highlighted in the video above.

It’s a solid job, though. The game feels very good on a tablet, so I can only imagine it feeling better on a proper console or PC.

perhaps it’s a setting? maybe the physics can be changed in the options menu…

i have to ask.. will it have the intro video?

    • Reply

Yes it does, it only shows up when you start a new save file. Which is fine by me, seeing as who didn’t watch the video before they started playing the game anyway? Besides, if you really want to watch the intro over and over, that’s what the visual mode is for.

Ill get it for my ipod

Notice how he couldn’t “hold right to win” in Sonic CD XD

Reading Christian’s name really made my day, now THAT’S a Sonic fan we can be proud of, instead of wasting his time bitching about green eyes he used his time to create a great engine that eventually was BOUGHT by SEGA, it’s almost impossible to believe a Sonic fan actually used his skills in something good =p
