UPDATE: Sonic Generations PC Specs Detailed, Official Press Release

[UPDATE: Erase all doubts about the PC version now. Sega Europe and Sega of America put out a press release confirming a digital version for PCs, which includes support for Steamworks so players can use their saves via Steam’s “cloud” to play their save game from any computer. No word if this will include PC/PS3 interoperability like other Steamworks title Portal 2.]

If any doubts of a PC version of Sonic’s 20th Anniversary flagship title remained, today’s releases from GreenManGaming may be enough to clear it all up.

So what will you need to run this on your computer?

Minimum Requirements
Microsoft Windows 7/Vista/XP Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 (2×2.0GHz) or AMD equivalent 2GB RAM (Windows 7/XP)/3GB RAM (Windows Vista) NVIDIA GeForce 8800 / ATI Radeon HD 2900 11 GB free hard drive space

Recommended Requirements
Microsoft Windows 7 Intel Core i5 @ 2.66 GHz / AMD Phenom II X4 @ 3.0 GHz 3GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5850 11 GB free hard drive space

The Recommended Settings are certainly nothing to sneeze at in terms of the power needed to fuel the game’s use of Sega’s proprietary lighting engine, the Hedgehog Engine, among other influences like keeping the game running at large resolutions at a smooth 60 frames per second.

No word yet of the game appearing on Steam outside of references in Steam’s index to a pre-order page appearing soon, but sites like Direct2Drive are also allowing pre-orders for the digital edition while Amazon’s French site has a temporary box art for the game with the Games for Windows Live banner.

“No word yet of the game appearing on Steam”

The Sonic Generations pre-order is in the Steam registery.

    • Reply

Yep, that much we know of, but it’s more waiting for a page on the service to go up with a nice pre-order button. =P

Since when is it on PC?!

    • Reply

For a while now…it was a bit of a rumour before with it appearing suspiciously on certain documents, later being removed.
From this, though, it seems that we will be seeing it on PC after all!

It just seems weird to me that Sega would wait until now to say anything about it.  I’ll be getting it for PC, but I guess that means the $5 I already put down for the 360 version will go to waste D:

Actually, the Steam registry lists Sonic Generations.

Also, my friend and I were arguing for an hour over the specs needed for this game. All I can conclude is that the PC version will look FAR better than the 360 and PS3 versions with those requirements.

    • Reply

Which is why I’m glad I never bought a PS360. Many of the games I want to play on one of them are available and slightly better graphics-wise on a PC.

or that GFWL will be a CPU consuming satanic beast, and sega won’t optimize the game

I’m hoping this’ll work on Mac… My PC is way to weak.

    • Reply

You’re kidding, right? Mac…strong? Did you order it yesterday for the $6000 they’re charging for any good Macs? My gaming PC meets those specs and better for $700.

I believe mine is the mid-2010 model. And the reason I have it is due to the better editing software for videos.

Because i’m not a techie… Is it possible to have a game run at more than 60FPS, or is it the limit, or is it just that the eye doen’t pick up many more than 60FPS, therefore it’s useless to have it run faster than 60FPS?

    • Reply

60 fps isn’t the limit, you can go much higher, 60 fps just happens to be the minimum frames to make most games enjoyable.

      • Reply

You sure? OoT3D plays at 30FPS and I’ve NEVER had any slowdown or problems with the halved-from-standard Framerate.

        • Reply

60FPS is what we should be almost always be aiming for, but no one cares.

        • Reply

The faster the game and/or the more important it is to track fast-moving objects across the screen, the more it benefits from a higher FPS. For something like sonic, at 30FPS and at highest speeds the likelihood of something important appearing 1/3 past the screen on its first frame is quite high, and quite an issue. This is my main beef against Wii/Colors, although that game really is gorgeous for its hardware.

Another example is music games. The higher the scrollrate, the more obvious a low framerate is.

To get even more nerdy, technically there isn’t a point to render more frames than your monitor can display (most monitors are guaranteed to run at 60Hz, and it’s an NTSC standard) but beyond that, 60fps is only perfect if you have vertical sync. In most cases vertical sync also introduces a slight delay, which annoys people in games which require as small an input latency as possible. Higher draw FPS will reduce apparent screen tearing with vsync off, due to the smaller difference in subsequent images.

Seriously? IS THAT A CUTSCENE!? By this time we already saw a cutscene from colors, wheres the generations one?

    • Reply

The Colors cutscene was released to dissuade fears that Roger Craig Smith was going to sound all warped and terrible like the Alton Towers recordings. That doesn’t need to be done in this case.

      • Reply

I want it to see how classic sonic reacts. Seriously the first snapshot of a cutscene at least add some motion to it. Its just so nerve wreaking. But its out in 3 weeks so oh well

      • Reply

Indeed. In this case, we already know that Roger Craig Smith will sound all warped and terrible, so, no need for us to see a Generations cutscene.

  • Reply

Yes! Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes YES! And here I was thinking it wasn’t going to happen!

Well, granted, I suppose it could still fall through, but assuming it DOES come to PC, I am totally getting it. PC’s MY gaming console, man.

Of course, if I do get it, my little brother will probably steal my laptop so he can play it himself (he’ll probably be more excited about this news than I am).

    Awesome!

    I just hope:

    XPS 630
    Processor: Intel Core2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.40GHz,1066FSB)
    OS: Windows Vista
    Memory: 4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz -4 DIMMs

    Is good enough….

    • Reply

      Oh… and I should include Video Card: nVidia GeForce 9800GX2 1024MB GDDR3

      • Reply

wow. you just listed my exact computer stats… but only difference is I have an extra 9800 cause it was cheap 😛 I really hope that our PCs are enough to play it 🙂

        • Reply

Hah, go us! I hope so too. I’ve overclocked a bit (not that I can recall the present settings, though I know I didn’t go as far as the guide said, as I wanted to install another exhaust fan), but whether or not that will have an impact on gameplay is an unknown. I do know when I had StarCraft II on the highest settings, there was tons of lag.

I hope attempts at recording via fraps don’t cause horrible lag… assuming the game even runs halfway decently. ;p

Why is Sonic and Sonic reinacting a scene from Aha’s music video ‘Take on me’? oh and I’m glad that Generations is coming on PC

    • Reply

The “two person mirror” gimick actually predates that reference of yours. First time I saw it was in an old Marx Bros. movie.

      • Reply

It’s a very common pantomime trick used since the 1920s. Two characters pretend to mirror each other until one of them breaks the illusion, usually by breaking the fourth wall.

        • Reply

It was also featured in the Sonic Underground episode where Sonic and his siblings travel into the future where they became dictators and Robotnik became good.
(Namely where Sonia visits her future self)

And I would bet it was featured in AoStH a few times as well.

    Time to upgrade.

  • Reply

why are the rec specs so high? An 8800 is easily capable of keeping up with a 360’s graphics chip… are they catering to pc gamers?! :O Perhaps we’ll have a better looking game 🙂

  • Reply

yes i think that i am able to run sonic generations

  • Reply

Very cool. Just a Steam page and the PC confirm is… confirmed 😛

People have been going nuts for a PC version since we first heard of SG. Why can’t people just buy a 360 or a PS3 and play the game on that system and call it a day??

    • Reply

Some people aren’t interested in buying a console for one game. The more audiences a game reaches, the better.

      • Reply

Not to mention the game should look and play better on PC.

      • Reply

And I don’t have $250 to fritter away on the ONE GAME I would ever buy on the system.

  • Reply

well i need to get a graphics card update.
besides, a PC release saved me $200 because i though i was going to have to buy a 360.

If I don’t have to have steam, I’ll buy!
    Great news!

  • Reply

So i assume you already preordered. Gene

    • Reply

Nope. I managed to snag a PS3 Collector’s Edition from Amazon.co.uk before they sold out. I wouldn’t be opposed to a PC version pick up if and when it shows up on Steam, however.

  • Reply

I, for one, won’t be able to run it, but then again my PC is outdated as shit. 😛

  • Reply

Might be asking a little too much, but I hope there is a retail PC version. It would make my day to have an actual disk, I just don’t really like buying non-material games.

  • Reply

Woah, those PC Specs are amazing! I was already getting the XBOX 360 Version, I don’t know if I should get the PC Version too. My PC is Barely Meeting the recommended Specs…

    • Reply

Me too! I’m still getting the 360 version because If I am to run it on my slow PC, I’d have to by an external hard drive! And believe me they are not cheap!

  • Reply

I’m going to shit myself is Sonic’s shoes appear as Pre-Order weapons in Team Fortress 2.

(Makes the wearer run faster than usual)

    • Reply

      Why would they do that?

      • Reply

They would boost the sales of the PC version.

        • Reply

That, and usually when there’s something exciting coming up on Steam, TF2 usually would have a pre-order item for it. I’m not looking forward to it THAT much, but it would be cool if they did.

  • Reply

Great I have that video card and guess what, windows won’t recognize it, EVEN with the Drivers in it.

  • Reply

I’m happy this is going straight to PC. As soon as I have a lil extra scratch it’s getting a preorder. Here’s hoping it doesn’t suck.

  • Reply

Cool, my laptop can run it, though I might have to turn down some of the visuals because mine is Intel Core i3, damn my sister is lucky because her laptop is Intel Core i5, oh well I can always trick her into playing it on hers if mine lagged =p

  • Reply

    Main objective now: buy it.
All other worries are clear, YES!!!

  • Reply

Well there’s no chance MY Laptop can run it…

    o.o….
    *shits pants*

    YES!

Saving cash right now. Hope that Steam does not include any region restriction.

Where Is it on Steams registry I searched and nothing popped up in the store.

  • Reply

    Why can’t this stuff ever be for Mac? Ugh. Now it’s official. I can’t get this game. I don’t have a ‘360, a PS3, a 3DS, or a PC.

    • Reply

I just hate how it isn’t on Mac. Yeah, I’m also getting the PS3 and 3DS versions, but I’d also like the computer version. My PC is mainly for writing essays and such. My Mac is my gaming computer.

  • Reply

Hmmm getva pc version or no? Nah 3ds is good for me.

    • Reply

My friends keep telling me that classic tails is gonna talk for clasdic sonic. I said hell no. Anyways is that true and for the 3ds vetsion are the classic genesis stages gonna be changed or are they the original stages?

      • Reply

The classic stages on the 3DS versions has the very same level design as before. The modern stages on the 3DS have the very same linear-boost-to-win as Dimps’ previous games (except for Sonic 4, because…. it… didn’t have any boost, but still, all you needed to do is run)

I’m incredibly worried what terrible tf2 item this game will generate.

  • Reply

I have no idea if my laptop will run it. I don’t have any of the consoles needed otherwise, just the Wii. Can anyone tell me if these specs will work?

    Dell Studio XPS
    Intel Core Duo 2 P8700 @ 2.53GHz
    Installed RAM: 4.00 GB

Looking like it may not, but I just NEED this game…

    • Reply

Depends of which graphic card and how many VRAM you have. I’m glad for having ATI, ’cause my HP laptop with its crappy cooling system will melt if I had a nVidia CUDA.
      I need this game too.

  • Reply

Will it be worth buying the pc version just for the inevitable mod support? Or should I get the ps3 version to have guaranteed good performance?(I have no idea what my pc specs are)

  • Reply

    YES!!!! YES!!! THANK YOU SEGA!!
I don’t have an Xbox 360 or PS3, so I was pretty jealous, considering Wii technology is lacking when it comes to this. BUT OH YES!!! Now I can STILL enjoy both versions of the game!

  • Reply

    Thank you god!!!

  • Reply

Well for Macs you can always get Windows via bootcamp… although that would involve buying Windows… it might be a sound investment just to access all the Windows-only software (games, finances, software development).

  • Reply

I hope you guys talking about bootcamp know that it won’t run very nicely in it. I know some one who bought a £3000 mac last year, it can’t even run 3D max in bootcamp for crap.

I have Windows 7, a AMD Phemon 2 N660 Dual-Core 3.2 Ghz processor, an ATI Radeon 4290 graphics card, 3 GB of RAM, and way more than enough hard drive space to install it. Are those specs good to play with decent enough settings to replace my Xbox 360 preorder?

Do you think my computer will be able to run it?
