Modern Generations Trailer Brings It Back to Modern Times

We’ve seen glimpses of the Genesis and Dreamcast Era stages, leaving just one era to explore before Sonic Generations sweeps its way to consoles globally in a few weeks. Tonight, IGN has fired the last shot courtesy of Sega with the debut of the Modern Era trailer.

Set to the new remixes of Sonic 2006‘s Crisis City music, we’re given first glimpses of Crisis City, Unleashed‘s Rooftop Run, and ColoursPlanet Wisp in full motion. Crisis City doesn’t miss a beat in terms of looks from its original counterpart, although we can only hope it doesn’t bring any stigmas from its origin game. The fire tornado is in its full presence, though it’s hard to tell if the two Sonics will have to avoid flying debris the tornado throws out, including any sort of automobiles.

The other big draw is the reveal of Planet Wisp, now even more crisp and vivid than before on its Wii origin stage. While some fans may be sad to see the level isn’t all green and does include Eggman’s construction sites, the stage still keeps its elegant charm. Even the Rocket and Spikes Wisps make returns with their announcer cues. ROCKET!

Meanwhile, Spagonia hasn’t ever looked so festive with all the hot air balloons, even if one of Dr. Eggman’s flying attack blimps is ready to wreck havoc on the city. Not much else is new here visually, as it’s been the most displayed stage these past months for the modern era. However, there’s still no sign of a Werehog!

And if that didn’t top it all off, we get one last sneak peek at a certain final boss making his grand return, now with a very unusual change to a dragon-esque scale look.

    I love the music.

Perfect Chaos inspires me to draw something massive. Also, I bet the next trailer is dedicated to nothing but the 3DS version. If not, then, here’s to DAT REMIX!

Now I really wish Sonic Colors was an HD title…

Crisis City OMG O_O I love you SEGA <3 also Whisps are back XD

Didn’t realise it was Crisis City in the background till the end. Also notice they didn’t have a big Modern to Classic switch as in the last trailer.

And lol Perfect Chaos takes what should be a “Modern” boss spot.

    • Reply

Actually, no, he doesn’t. If you’ve seen the achievements and such, there’s ones for Metal Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. Knowing you race Metal and Shadow, and knowing Metal’s race is stored in Chemical Plant, we can assume Shadow is stored in City Escape, and Silver in Crisis City. Perfect Chaos will be the boss at the end of the Dreamcast Era, like Death Egg Robot is for the Genesis Era. Modern’s Final Boss will be the Time Eater, from what I can tell.

      • Reply

Actually, Modern’s Boss will be Egg Dragoon.

Time Eater will be the Final Boss anyway…

        • Reply

Yeah, I remembered Egg Dragoon like 10 minutes after I posted that.

He’s a boss like that! Silver must be pissed.

      • Reply

Yeah, but look at all that nice press over a Sonic game, Sega has gotten lately. Why ruin that with Silver?

Crisis City is confirmed! YES!!! 😀

I wonder if it will just be regular Sonic vs Perfect Chaos? After all, Sonic can run over water when you boost so it shouldn’t be a problem.

    • Reply

I think perfect chaos will be fought by classic sonic ( because he only has 2 bosses as of right now). It should be fought much like the sonic 3 and knuckles death egg battle phase 2.

  • Reply

That tornado is carrying a car!

OH, and I think clasic sonic’s tornado chase will be like the 3rd act of Lava Reef from Sonic and Knuckles? anyone think so too?

    • Reply

      That would be sweet!

  • Reply

Anyone else thinks they kinda messed up on Perfect Chaos? I was expecting it to look more organic – or realistic, to put it in other words – but this looks even less detailed than the original, which is quite the issue. Surely I haven’t seen everything yet, maybe it’s still in development (but I kinda doubt that.. the game is pretty much done).

    • Reply

Well, the be honest, when you look at how the universe of Sonic has shifted from say.. SA1/2 to Sonic 06 where everything was meant to be the ‘what if’ realistic side to Sonic where Unleashed took the Pixar/Disney route to design, and then Colors created even more of this revamp with the Badniks after Sonic 4 tried to pull off the same thing. I personally won’t mind though aslong as it still looks like Perfect Chaos to me. I wouldn’t really say he looks less detailed either, more so he has scales under his liquid form.

      • Reply

And how do you know that this “new” look wasn’t the look Sega wanted in the first place, but couldn’t pull it off at the time due to the limits of the time’s technology?

Either way, I think the new look makes Perfect Chaos look that much more wicked. XD

And yay for Crisis City! That’s probably the level I’m looking forward to the most. 🙂

        • Reply

Because Chaos has looked liquidy from Sonic Adventure to every game beyond it

        • Reply

I feel like Perfect Chaos was meant to be like this from the get-go. Each addition of chaos adds some bones or veins or something, so it’s only fitting that Perfect Chaos has a whole body. Besides, it was a close-up. He probably still has water all around him also.

I never played Sonic 06, but Crisis City looks cool. And Classic Planet Wisp looks *really* classic.

I want that Crisis City Remix on my MP3 now! I watched this video three times and every time I saw Perfect Chaos I had to change my pants! Crisis City is looking too sweet and did any one catch Modern Sonic chasing that Eggman Battle ship in RoofTop Run? COME ON NOVEMBER 1ST!!

  • Reply

Oh shit that Crisis City music remix. Fucking awesome. Even with the scales, can’t wait to see the Perfect Chaos boss fight, considering it will hopefully have an Open Your Heart remix to accompany it.

This sonic game looks amazing so far.
    Can’t wait to purchase it,
Sega, you may have done it!

  • Reply

I’m actually most excited to play Crisis City. How weird is that?

If SEGA remade Sonic 2006 on the Generations engine i’d buy it quite quickly.

Cannot wait! Always been a sonic fan even of the recent releases while some weren’t amazing i still loved them! This game will be THE sonic game and crisis city was the best level from 06 even though the game itself wasn’t so great better this then the jungle level or the train one so cant wait sonic generations you have my full pre-order!

Amazingly it´s one of the weakest trailers for me… The only level that looks awesome is Planet Wisp. Crisis City looks too dull and boring, and it´s the first remix I don´t like of all the released ones. Rooftop Run seems so far nearly the same level with a meh remix… And that Perfect Chaos model seems from last generation. It´s a pitty, I thought the Dreamcast era trailer was totally awesome.

    Crisis city. CRISIS CITY!
Sega, i have one thing to say:
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you

Is it me, or is this game just getting better and better? Also did nobody notice the Metallic Madness Mix at the end. Proof: listen at 50 seconds till the end. Then listen to MM present. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMLDesSJ1BI&feature=related (link provided). Sounds similar?

    • Reply

Maybe its gonna be similar to the Classic City Escape mix, how it has Endless Mine mixed into it.
Personally I’m still hoping for Rooftop Run mixed with Balloon Park. It makes sense and it seems like it would sound good.

I’m officially hyped. Even the crappy stages from the crappiest games from the crappiest generation look BLOODY EPIC. Especially for Classic Sonic. It looks llike they’re REALLY taking a look at design choices they made in 90’s games. Not just from Sonic ones too. I’m seeing some stuff from the original Crash Bandicoot and Donkey Kong Country titles as well. I want it to be Christmas already.

    • Reply

Rooftop run and planet wisp are nowhere near crappy. And the only bad game from the modern era was Sonic 06

Here’s my restored copy of Chemical Plant Zone Modern from Generations. Taken from three different audio sources. It’s on par with Big Arms and Mushroom Hill rips.  Enjoy.

Chaos doesn’t look very… “water-y”. He looks like a giant dragon or something.

    • Reply

      Well…He IS a water dragon. =P

REALLY not impressed with that Crisis City remix. Almost disappointed. It doesn’t have that epic feel that the original did. It sounds rushed and boring. The music should be noticeable to add to the gameplay, I forgot it was there for the majority of the trailer. Almost for the best.

    • Reply

Me too. So far is the only remix I don´t like at all. I think Rooftop Run one is worse than the original though, but I still find it enjoyable.

      • Reply

At first I was a little disappointed with the remix too, but after re-watching the trailer a few times over the past week or so, I have to admit it’s growing on me.

Original’s probably still the best, though.

In SA1 perfect chaos looked like that to show off the system’s capabilities and show off an enemy that couldn’t previously be possible. In short, Perfct Chaos not being made out of water is like Sonic not being blue. Sure the gameplay will be fantastic though, even Crisis City looks like fun

    • Reply

He is made out of water still. You can clearly see the liquid running off his body in the cutscene.

      • Reply

He’s not made out of water here. The scene in the trailer looks more like a wet lizard.

        • Reply

He has scales UNDER the water, you can clearly see that in the SA1 opening. Most likely, you see the water come off his head, then it zooms into the face and the eye with the water surface coming off, then zooms out and he’s made of water again.

      • Reply

        @Jack and Rodgers

Idk, he just doesn’t really…look as good as he did in the SA1 intro. He sorta did have scales, but here the scales are like…completely flat, he’s not transparent (won’t be able to see his brain like in SA1 :O ) he looks duller and he’s glowing neon green. It’s a shame because with todays technology he coulda looked like he did in the SA1 intro…

  • Reply

Planet wisp doesnt look any different. SADX’s chaos looked better than that. And haha classic can use wisps.

    • Reply

I fail to see how Classic is using Wisps. Both shots that show the Wisps in use are Modern Sonic.

      • Reply

Ok, SPIKE! *might* be Classic, but still. Pretty sure it’s Modern. WE’LL FIND OUT IN JUST UNDER A MONTH.

      • Reply

No wait, when he jumps while using SPIKE! it uses the sound of Modern Sonic jumping.

        • Reply

That actually was classic sonic using wisps. If you listen after modern sonic goes down the zipline the music switches to classic, and it shows all classic gameplay. The noise you heard when Spikes jumped is the same noise from Colors, so I’m sure they just made the same spikes jump noise for both Sonics

    *Possible Spoilers*

I only wish the hub-worlds are 3D as-well as 2D… I’d imagine it when it got announced that it would be like in Unleashed.

Exploring level hub worlds should be, for example like Chemical Plant Zone, should have flickies and small animals you interact with for fun, and explore levels for power-ups, easter eggs, secret warps and other fun memorabilia (like annoying the badnik workers there), in which this game ticks off almost every point, sans 3D hubworlds.

I wish that there is an ice-cap style level, a multiplayer online race/knock-off mode (16-25 players) and a free-roam mode but this game looks amazing!!

I am very sad that Sonic CD was not included in Generations. I have reason to believe many others are in agreement with me.

    • Reply

You race Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway Bad Future.

    • Reply

I agree with you. Actually, i’m very sad that there is any post-1998 game in Generations. And even sadder that there’s Unleashed and Colors.

      • Reply

Then I guess Generations just isn’t the game for you. If all you wanted Generations to be was “the classic games remade in HD, and oh maybe with Modern Sonic thrown in,” then I’m afraid you’ll have to find a way to make that game yourself. Because you’re not getting it here. Now could you kindly take your pessimism elsewhere?

        • Reply

Hmm… no. I wouldn’t kindly take my pessimism elsewhere, because I do complain about what I find wrong, I’m not the kind of guy who’d even buy a dildo if Sonic’s name and logo were printed on it. Since the very beggining, I thought Generations’ main goal was to bring us back to Sonic’s gold times. Even the so called “Dreamcast Era”(modern modern modern modern) is worth appearing, but, really, Crisis City? Ok, the level itself is good, but ahead of the plothole of it’s appearance, not a good level to “remember old days”. Orange Roofs?? We’ve seen the very same level in the very same graphics and very same engine like a year ago. Planet Wisp? Saw it yesterday, although it isn’t such an Aberration like the 2 previous levels and has a whole graphic revamp.

        • Reply

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the kind of person who worships the ground Sonic stand on. I understand that Sonic has been less-than-stellar lately (and that’s putting it nicely), and I complain about what I find wrong, too. But this game isn’t even out yet. And frankly, if all you have to say about the game is bad things (which seems to be the case here), why are you even still here? I’ll admit that the game probably could benefit from being more balanced toward the classic stages, but even so, the modern stages have just as much right to appear.

And by the way, it’s not up to you to decide what Generations was “meant to be.” It’s up to Sega. And what it’s meant to be, according to them, is a celebration of 20 years of Sonic. ALL twenty years. Even the shitty ones. And yes, even the ones that just happened. Because they happened, and are hence part of Sonic’s history. 20 years ago or 20 seconds ago, history is history. What would be the point of a 20th birthday game if you were only going to focus on the first five years?

From the way you put it, it sounds like what you want is just to relive the classic games again. And if that’s the case… just play the classic games. They’re right there, on about 20 different compilations that are readily available for purchase and/or download. Generations is a digest of 20 years’ worth of Sonic. If you’re just going to hate 70% of the games stages, then don’t play it.

This reminds me of Donkey Kong Country somehow.

    …That’s a good thing.

But…But… According to the Story, Sonic Never was in Crisis City… well he was but he wasn’t. Sonic 06 never really happened. So this is new for both of them isn’t it? lol Time Paradox

    The Colour Power Blue Cube deserves to return;
Blue Cube was far more superior.

    Needless to add on, I find that Aquarium Park is superior to Planet Wisp as well;
That Zone had deserved to return, not Planet Wisp. 🙁

I know the feeling. I was really hoping Dragon Road would be in Generation, but we get boring Rooftop Run instead. Oh well.

      • Reply

        My friend Chuck had wanted Jungle Joyride to return;
Personally, since we didn’t get any GG/MS zones, Hidden Palace, or Icecap and Lava Reef, I would have at least wanted Cool Edge, as it is a Water Stage.

        Hopefully, Sega and Sonic Team pull off what Konami was doing with Harmony of Despair and give us the more popular zones of the Sonic series;
That would make my day. 🙂

Guys, its a celebration of the past 20 years. Sonic cd IS being recognized with stardust speedway bad future…..they botched it up by removing classic amy and classic eggman, but besides that it IS there.

Now sonic 3D blast, or the flickies….or the music should have been in this game. It was sonics FIRST 3D game and it deserves some recognition….I can only hope that there’s an unlockable.

Reguarding chaos….his teeth….are green….and they look printed…..it looks like his mouth is stuck shut. He’s always had scales in CG but in game the graphics couldn’t handle the scales. So the scales are okay, I’m sure he will secrete the water.
