Brand New Sonic Generations Trailer Showcases Sky Sancturary

After the small bits and pieces of information that have trickled out over the last couple days concerning Sonic Generations, Sega today decided to be nice and show off even more new juicy tidbits, straight from the source. Put together in a trailer showcasing the world of Classic Sonic, we not only get to see the now-familiar footage of Green Hill and Chemical Plant, but the final stage connected the first era of Sonic the HedgehogSky Sanctuary. And yes, you can hear the music.

First seen in Sonic & Knuckles back in 1994, the original version of Sky Sanctuary was the turning point of the entire Death Egg Saga. Knuckles had finally learned of Dr. Eggman’s intentions. The Death Egg had launched once more. Angel Island remained in peril, and the only force that could stop Eggman from succeeding were none other than Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles “Tails” Prower. So it only makes sense that, if any level were to be revisited in glorious 3D, it would be this saga-defining moment. And that sweeping soundtrack…that’s something not easily duplicated. You know something is going down. The remix just reinforces that fact, even if the trailer only lasts for a minute. How can anyone wait for that whole song to be played in full? Man, that soundtrack can not come out soon enough

With Eggrobos galore and even a hint of the Death Egg in the background, the Classic Era of the game is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Heck, the whole game looks to be shaping up that way, with so much effort in making sure this is the one entry in the series that can please old and new fans alike. Since Generations is only a couple months away, it won’t be long before every level is teased in some way, the Dreamcast and Modern eras of Sonic surely looking for their moment in the spotlight as well. Speaking of teases…yes, the ending of the trailer has Metal Sonic in full motion. The only downside is that we don’t get to see more…but I’m sure that will happen in due time.

Now all we have to hope is that somewhere in the level, Knuckles pops up but only if Sonic crouches between a certain pair of pillars.

Explaration and a little bit of platforming in modren parts. Nuff said to buy this game.

    • Reply

….that’s just the duty of any platforming, Generations is only showing itself great because of the unavoidable comparations to prior shitty games.

“even Sonic Colors?” – SPECIALLY Sonic Colors.

        • Reply

Sonic Colours was only bad because it was too easy. It needed the open plan style levels but there needed to be some challenge in there somewhere.

I really cannot wait for generations now.

HOLY SHIT. SKY SANCTUARY…EGGROBOS. It’s making me feel like a 10 year old again. TBH, it looks more like Angel Island Zone from Advance, but oh well. It still looks great. Nice to see Metal Sonic at the end as well. Can’t wait to see if Gamma makes an appearance.

    meh… whatever

Mind blown. That is all. Even though, anyone noticed how they skipped Sonic 3? I smell another secret announcement.

    • Reply

They’re most likely considering Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a single game. I smell Sega with favouritism on Modern Sonic.

      • Reply

Less favouritism, more there are more Modern Sonic mainstream titles.

        • Reply

More there are more Classic Sonic good games than Modern Sonic good games.

          • But now it’s subjective. You’re more than welcome to your opinion, but it still remains fact that there are more “modern” than “classic” Sonic mainstream games.

I would believe that if it weren’t for the fact that they said “1994: Sonic & Knuckles” and not “1994: Sonic 3 & Knuckles”.

        • Reply

They have to put out 3 levels for each era. They had to choose between Sonic 3 and S&K.

Sky Sanctuary sure got a major face lift.  It looks more amazing then I was expecting.

Sonic! You owe me a new TV!!!
J/k, but it’s nice to see the Eggrobo as a fightable enemy once again.
And Chibi Metal Sonic actually looks badass in motion, a feat that still surprises me.

It’s…. it’s… glorious! Originally I was disappointed when I heard they passed over Sonic 3 for this stage from S&K as I always preferred the Sonic 3 stages. But this is total justification.

Now the only two zones we haven’t seen are Speed Highway and Crisis City. I wonder what order you play through the levels? I reckon Crisis City will be the final stage.

First off, thank you to all the commentors who tipped us off. This is certainly something nice to come home to after working a late shift at work.
Thanks goes to Sega for using the actual music in this trailer. It sounds absolutely stupendous and not gonna lie, I shed a manly tear. Sky Sanctuary is one of my all time favorite zones from S3K.

No problem Gene, and yes I think they did a particularly good job with this zone.

I still wished Flying Battery made in but Sky Sanctuary is good too!

This new Sky Sanctuary Zone truly emphasizes a Sanctuary in the shy. It looks a lot like Twilight Princesses sky temple. Them Occuco god birds with human faces thing. I was so happy 2 hear Sky’s music cuz SS. Was my one of my favorite zones in Sonic 3 & K. I think they skipped Sonic 3. Cuz Sonic 3 & Knuckles are the same game. Come on November!

    Sonic 3 – Ice Cap pleaseeeee 😀

I hope with all my might pal.

Epic video! Never liked the original sky sanctuary that much, I feel I might prefer this one with its similarities to angel island and marble garden in particular…ah, and temple of gaia, too. Still jaw-dropping, can’t wait for november.
Sonic 3 logo is absent from the trailer, so we can dream of future dlcs. Hydrocity anyone? C’mon, I love icecap, but think of hydrocity in hd! °_°

There goes all hope of IceCap. Oh well.

Hey don’t wory about it, there’s always DLC.

Just epic. The new remix for Sky Sanctuary is pretty well 😛

  • Reply

With all the stages they have, there’s a lot they don’t/won’t. I hope they keep releasing DLC until they get all mentionable levels in. I don’t care if I have to pay more, I just don’t want this game to end :O

Oh sweet heavens that music takes me way back.

    I’m about to cry…

I had to watch that video 4 times in a row.

    Thank you Sega.

Also, More levels in DLC please, I don’t care. Just do it.

Nice trailer, but.. what the hell? Did they just advertise their skills at bad physics with the part where Sonic breaks out of the little TV? XD

  • Reply

My god. Even as much as I love this news, I must ask of you SEGA…
    THREE Sonics….

    • Reply

where do you get 3 sonics from?

      • Reply

i presume he means adding dreamcast era sonic in.

      • Reply

Adventure 1 & 2, Advance 1, 2, & 3, Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and because of it’s admittedly Adventure-y feel, 2006, all combine into the Sonic between Modern and Classic…

        ADVENTURE SONIC!

        • Reply

But, isn’t there only 2 sonics in the game? I already know there is 3 eras in the game since they announced this already, but negiWDJr said 3 sonics which is false. Unless we get some kind of unlockable sonic character and gameplay.

      • Reply

Yes, there are only 2 Sonics in this game. Didn’t you fully read his comment? He ‘must ask of SEGA’, he did not say there are 3 Sonics in the game in any way.

Oh god. I just noticed something terrible. The physics we see – is that all? Is it all about running through an environment, with a few tricks up Sonics sleeve, but without much environmental physics? All dynamic things are just targets for homing attacks or linearly moving objects. What happened to the spinning platforms from Sky Sanctuary, or the ‘spring clouds’, hence, even any variation in the few existing objects in the game? It’s like every spring is the same, no matter how you move into it, as opposed to the originals where you had actual control of how you moved.

It feels like all you do is follow a simple path, just in a pretty looking environment. As with all the moderns, there is so little freedom, and even in the 2d classics you had way more control over your character.

“What happened to the spinning platforms from Sky Sanctuary, or the ‘spring clouds’”. you can see a clouds from 0:29-0:30 and 0:34. watch from 0:31-0:34 and you can see multiple paths.

      • Reply

I meant an actual coded cloud, not a background element that’s just for the graphics. I did see the multiple paths, which looks promising, but it doesn’t look like it provides as much freedom as other games used to.

        • Reply

the coded clouds are there look closer. at 00:30 theres one right after the stairs with the EggRobos, and at 0:34 theres two behind the EggRobo

    • Reply

It’s just a little 20 seconds preview. You don’t expect the whole game to be an autorama like that, right? (even though the full Modern Green Hill Zone did follow the linearity of it’s 20sec preview…. but still…)

      • Reply

True, we’ve yet to see the whole deal, but if they do the same as they did with Green Hill Zone, I fear it will be just another Sonic Colors. Just with a strong hint of nostalgia and the best music ever.

I used to tihnk the Modern was a bland mess but now I’m starting to think it’s looking up. Certainly, the 2D segments of the 3D gameplay are exciting but the 3D bits look like they have a little more variety.

    1. You spelt “Sanctuary” wrong in the title, you gave it an extra r 😛
    2. I totally went to sonicKAI on YouTube and listened to Sky Sanctuary for a good bit of my day thanks to this trailer…Soooooo excited for this game!!!

If Sega can top the Ashura’s Dark Reign version of Sky Sanctuary (which they have) then I can’t wait to see Crisis City and Speed Highway and the other bosses. Truly amazing how Sega can top any level you throw at them.

That remix gave me tears. Really.

  • Reply

Is this too much to hope for, or will there possibly be more remixes available as downloadable content? :p

    • Reply

I hope they do. My only hype over the game is the music and a bit of the classic gameplay.
