First Gameplay Footage of Chemical Plant, City Escape

You waited patiently enough and, as is the nature of online games reporting, it’s just not good enough to wait until the game is out to absorb every detail of it. So, to feed your insatiable hunger for all things Sonic Generations, we bring you this video courtesy of German website Gameswelt.

Thanks to a tip from forum member TimmiT, we get our first look (and listen!) to both the classic and modern version of Chemical Plant and City Escape. Let me tell you, Chemical Plant has never looked better–or worse, if you approach it from a pollution-generating plant. The modern version, which looks to be Chemical Plant in the middle of a critical meltdown, has quite a few references to Sonic Unleashed‘s Eggmanland in look.

And of course, the music. Chemical Plant’s iconic theme was touched up not unlike Green Hill’s theme and it doesn’t sound too bad, even if the loop back is still a little strange sounding. In the brief burst we get to hear the Modern version, it sounds like they went with a full rock and techno remix.

City Escape is much less a shock, as we’ve had gameplay trailers and music leaks of it from before, courtesy of Sega and both Sonic Boom!.

Before you panic that Modern Sonic sounds different, they didn’t fire Roger Craig Smith and replace him with what sounds like Lance Bass’ Sephiroth. This is a Japanese build of the game. Obvious statement, I know, but people do panic over small things like this. Rest assured, Smith will keep his wise ass role ready for the English-speakers. [UPDATE: Apparently this really IS  a German dub of the game, part of a cluster that includes Spanish and French dub of the game in Europe. Neat!]

If you wish to download the 720p version of the video for whatever, simply follow this link.

I got one this to say, epic! 😀
wait, German actor? I thought outside of Japan it’s always the English voices 😮

Little slip on the info received. I had a feeling something was up when I saw action button prompts in Japanese. Still, if that is Jun’ichi Kanemaru, he sounds quite a bit more bored in those grunts than usual, or did they change voice actors over there too while I wasn’t looking?

      • Reply

So this is the voice of Junichi Kanemaru or are they using German voice actors now?

Two funny facts about the voice acting:

    1. Sonic’s voice (Marc Stachel) is also the voice of the well-known Pokémon Gym leader Brock.

    2. While an interview with the gaming website GamersGlobal.de Iizuka-san revealed that the German voice of Dr. Eggman (Harmut Neugebauer) is his favorite Eggman voice.

Ah, so it’s fully confirmed now that Europe is getting multiple dubs now? I kept hearing it was, then it wasn’t… quite frustrating. Good to hear! I swore this couldn’t be Jun-ichi. I’ll fix that up.

Iizuka-san obviously haven’t heard the truly best Eggman voice actor:

      Long John Baldrey!

I agree with this comment entirely.

In fact, I wish we could resurrect Long John Baldry just for this game.

Wow. Chemical Plant looks.. pretty damn awesome, both Modern and Classic. And that music, oh shit. I like what I hear from Classic a lot, and with Modern it sounds pretty nice. I like how the music goes to a slower pace as compared to the original music, but still rocking out with synth. If there’s going to be guitar added to the music like with Green Hill, that’d be awesome.
Also, is it me or did the modern City Escape music get touched up on? (not to mention some of those effects… Damn.)

  • Reply

This is absolutely fantastic and i can’t wait for this game to come out. the ONLY thing I want to point out is that the music for the modern segments don’t sound right to me. I.E.: The Modern Chemical plant sounded slow and didn’t seem to fit the pace. And the Modern City Escape singer sounded off key.

those are honestly my only issues at this point in time with Generations.

I think it’s a bit disappointing they didn’t give the modern stages when playing as classic Sonic some kind of Megadrive remix or something, I mean Modern Sonic gets all of the classic stages a remix, why shouldn’t Classic Sonic also get his own 16-bit music remixes?

    • Reply

To be honest I was hoping for this as well but it doesn’t really matter I guess. Sonic always has awesome music (except for Dark Brotherhood, that OST sucked)

    • Reply

      Because Sonic 4, that’s why.

    • Reply

      • Reply

what i mean is that it was confirmed that classic sonic would have a 16 bit remix

        • Reply

          Classic City Escape indicates otherwise.

    • Reply

I guess they were aiming for the STYLE of the 16-bit era(and stated as such), not actually composing straight out of there (you can still hear some classic Sonic sampling, though) and would explain why Junichi Masuda is NOT doing as per Sonic 4.

  • Reply

    Did they fix the roll?

  • Reply

People are getting excited by a stage where it’s gameplay might probably be better in the original. I am mainly talkin about the classic bit. I still see scripts, I still see bad rolling physics. How is chemical plant even chemical plant without working ball physics?
Anyway, this game is total trash to me. I am sadly not a graphics whore.

    • Reply

dont say that because when the game comes out your going to buy it.

      • Reply

Last sonic game i’ve bought was sonic and secret rings so dont worry about that. Not everyone is a lunatic sonic fanboy, some actually have brains. It’s funny because other sega divisions make alot better games from a technical point. The most important team is actually the crappiest.

        • Reply

Well, most of Sonic Team has been replaced, so this is a totally different team compared to the 90’s team. But I actually thi9nk they’re getting better. They listen to us now. A lot of games don’t even have a forum to give their thoughts on the game, or a day where you can come into their building and give them your opinions. Plus, no matter how bad games like Sonic 20** were, they almost always bring in great music!

This explains why your point of view is so negative.

And don’t give me that “I played a bit of Colors on a friends’s Wii” or something, is not the same thing.

    • Reply

Lol @ assuming the only reason people like this is graphics. Also there was no evidence of bad physics anywhere.

I’m sorry, but if you haven’t bought a Sonic game in that long, why the fudge are you here? And I see nothing wrong with the physics, knowing SEGA it won’t be PERFECT, but it looks a hell of a lot better than that abomination of DLC SEGA gave us.
And trust me, man, if you’ve spoiled this game as much as I have, you’d know this game is about a lot more than graphics.

      • Reply

I haven’t bought and KEPT a Sonic game since Sonic Heroes. I’m here. Why? Because I love the franchise, but don’t support a lot of the recent games. I’d get Sonic Colors, but I lack a Wii. Will be buying Generations, fact.

    • Reply

to be honest I can see where you’re coming from. I was won over by the graphics, rather than the gameplay.

      • Reply

The last Sonic game I bought was Sonic Adventure 2 on DREAMCAST…

I didn’t like the demo…  I’ll wait to see how this game plays… I’m hoping they fix things, or, I’ll skip out on this too..  Marvel Vs. Capcom…. Sonic… certain things were at their best in the 90’s and turned to crap in present years.
But, things that sucked in the 90’s are awesome now… like.. Mortal Kombat…

My favorite part of Chemical Plant was that I could get Sonic going so fast, that the game had to catch up to me. From the video, doesn’t look like that’ll be happening.

    • Reply

It’s not all momentum anymore, and besides – if they had half the chance Sega would have corrected the camera issue to bring it up to where more recent Sonic games of the style are (think about it – Sonic NORMALLY goes at such a speed these days (see: Sonic Boost) that it’s the norm for the camera to follow such a high speed perfectly)

    Well.
I’m a fan of classic sonic but… in chemical plant… the modern stage is more interesting.

I find it amusing that I prefer Classic City Escape and Modern Chemical Plant rather than the eras they are from XD But Chemical Plant…the sound of those blue blobs *thinks back* How they used to take my rings when I was younger D:<

  • Reply

I’m liking the Levels, but besides the lack of change to Classic Sonic’s momentum and general physics. What strikes me the most is the Music. The music creates HALF of the feeling when Speeding through these Stages.

The modern levels are not impressing me with their music, Sonic goes well with FAST “HARD ROCK” not this slow half rock synth stuff. They should scrap these new lyrics for City escape and just use the old ones, either that or switch in a Lead guitar instead. Also That chemical plant is in some serious need of a Chunky lead guitar and an increase of Tempo. And the classic remix is SERIOUSLY lacking in general.

I found this chemical plant zone remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReWWgPMqDNs I think this is much better than what SEGA did.

    • Reply

Well, the music is your opinion. 🙂 But as a fan of most types of music, I really like the modern remix. I think it’s nice, smooth, and adventurous, and it really goes along with the feel of speeding through the plant. IN MY OPINION, Sega’s mix is better for the modern act. If you’re talking about the classic act, however, the music is kinda weird in flow… The music gets louder with more bass, and then loops back to silent. The volume increase is very climatic, but with it looping every minute it gets weird. (It still fits though:D)

*NOT TROLLING(btw), but why did you post a link to a steady-paced(pretty cool)remaster with synths if you wanted a fast-paced rock remix with a lead guitar? 😛

      • Reply

Ah, i should have been more specific. Although i mentioned that the Modern version was in need of some changes, i Posted that link to the classic remix, because i thought the Classic version they did was seriously lacking in general, and i thought that, that one was better.

Although, i am sure, that once i hear the full version of Chemical plants MODERN mix, i’ll probably like it more so, I’ve just been spoiled by listening to the Sonic 3 Angel island Rock remix that was in Brawl. Which was one of the most epic things i’ve ever heard. (which saddens me because it should have been in a proper sonic game, rather than a nintendo game).

I’m real disappointed with Modern City Escape’s Music, the modern remixes of Green Hill and Chemical Plant were phenomenal while CE’s is just humming a little diddy in the corner.

    • Reply

Well, I see what you mean, you have a great point (along with everyone else), but the music kinda begins to fit in with the video, dontcha think? Kind of a revamped city escape with a revamped theme? Maybe Sega didn’t use the original because it didn’t fit in as well with the stage?

All I read is “its not the right physics, he is too heavy, the spin dash is too strong.” It looks fun and that is the point of a game. If you don’t like it than play your hacks and don’t darken our front steps ever again. We real fans who played Sonic1. • Reply

Many diehard Sonic fans have varying thoughts about SONIC06 and I understand that totally. I as a diehard Sonic fan liked SONIC06 but that’s just me. (The only thing about 06 that angered me was the running parts for Sonic. They were WAY to hard for no reason. Everything else was fine) I’m going to quote something I said in another post.
“…but than again you have to thing about it like this: Sega is NOT making a Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3&K type game, their making Sonic Unleashed type games now. Their two very different Sonic games. As a company Sega is keeping up with the times which EVERY video game company is doing and which is SUPPOSE to happen. I can’t speak for the Mario games because I was never a big Mario fan, but even the Great Zelda series is changing their game play. Their adding Wii motion to it. I honestly prefer the old control system like that found in OoT and MM but their changing it up. Sega has done that with Sonic. Keep that in mind people Sega is NOT creating a Sonic Mega Drive game their making a Sonic game for the new systems. I LOVE the classic games but I’ve ran through Angel Island Zone so many times I’m sick of it. Sega didn’t change anything because the old style games are exactly the same right? If Sega made a game that was suppose to be just like the old school games but they messed up THAN complain. Sonic 4 I loved but we can all agree it did not play as the old games did, so that we can complain about. But Generations is a WHOLE different game entirely. It just happens to star Sonic, but it’s a new style of video game, that’s all.”

        • Reply

I love the modern (mainstream) Sonic games but you have to understand there ARE some legit reasons why people prefer the older games.
The Genesis games did have a fast speed to it but it also had a good focus on platforming. In the Unleashed style gameplay, it’s usually boost first, jump later. While I do appreciate Colors for trying (TRYING you haters) to put a bigger emphasis on platforming, it’s still mostly boosting (granted the boost gauge was seriously nerfed in Colors but still). It seems like Generations is moving more toward Unleashed gameplay than Colors gameplay, which means there probably is more emphasis on boosting in this game than actually platforming.
That’s not to say I won’t enjoy it when it comes out, I’m just saying it’d be nice if it was less of a cutscene and more of a game

        • Reply

@itsjustsomerandombatfan: The older games also had a sense of momentum, and an actual physics engine. In most games (ex, mario, rayman) you run at a fixed speed, and you jump to a fixed height and distance. In classic sonic, you could ACCELERATE, and your speed affected how far you would jump and how fast you would spin. The angle of the incline you ran on would affect how high sonic could launch himself into the air while running up that incline. And so the physics engine was very unique. 🙂

Mephiles is done for, Sonic 06 never happened, therefore Mephiles never happened.

      • Reply

Generations would have us believe otherwise, considering Crisis City is not only in, but still is ruined and infested with the Iblis’ spawn, and filled with lava. If the Iblis is around, that probably means Mephiles is too, and all it would take is them merging to make Solaris again.

        • Reply

Sonic 06 didn’t necessarily never happen, it just happened in a temporal pocket dimension of sorts created by the self-retcon. The “time holes” could easily break into that time frame, regardless of whether the main characters remember it or not. Regardless, this will lead to some interesting dialogue when Sonic gets here, for sure.

Phoenix: That’s a genius answer; never thought of that. I love this game so far. It looks spectacular. I love the classic levels but there’s one flaw in the game so far: Modern levels. The modern side seems way too bland. There’s no obstacles or anytihng to get in your way. I don’t see why they can’t use the same Sonic Unleashed daytime level design here. They hould be giving Modern the same effort that Classic has had so far. At this rate, we could end up with another Sonic Unleashed problem: Modern is the “werehog” of the game. People will think that the game’s only half good because of Classic stages so they won’t give a damn about Modern Sonic. Sega needs to use the level style from Sonic Unleashed in the 3D levels as well as more paths in 3D too. Music’s great though, Classic is looking amazing. Everytihng seems alright apart from Modern so far.

Bottomless pits are esily avoidable (City Escape, I’m looking at you) and ther’es a general lakc of danger in 3d where as 2.5d looks like there’s alot going on. I know it’s not shonw ehre but Green Hill is a common cultprit of making the 3D sections p#ss easy and there’s only minor platforming sections which are easy to beat. I do hope the Modern sections show some definite improvement in hazards and obstacles. Most of the levels look like a walk in the park in 3D by this point.

One of the main things I desperately want to see for downloadable content is the End Of The World level from Sonic 06. Give Jun Senoue the music while the graphic guys work their magic on the level. It would be one bit of downloadable content I’d kill to get. I know the original level is awful but a new one would be amazing.

I’ll just turn on my old megadrive and play the original wonder. Hope they will stop wasting their time and do something new *yawn*

So you’re saying that Sonic Team should stop working on Sonic Generations – the 20th Anniversary game that celebrates the franchise’s history – and do something new? What haven’t the recent titles (excluding Sonic 4: Episode Rehash) haven’t done that isn’t new at all?

      Anyway, cool story bro.

    Dang,wish I had an Xbox360 so I could play this game…

It’s also on the PS3 and, if the rumors are true, PC

I must say, I’m really impressed at Chemical Plant, the classic music is similar to the original, which as we all know is always a plus. But the modern version really caught me off guard, if Eggmanland were more like that, I’d play it more often.

This looks amazing, but It’s not done yet, so it may get better …or worse. I can’t judge a game until I have played it, but because of all the hype this game is getting before release I’m setting my standards high (I set my standards high for Sonic 4 and that didn’t turn out so well =( ). The Green Hill Demo played great, although I saw a few bugs that I hope are fixed before release. I hope we get 1 more demo before release =) (and one without locked up features).

I want to see Sky Sanctuary sooo badly…..

Is it just me, or is the classic Chemical Plant music the EXACT SAME as in Sonic 2? I thought I heard some added drums, but that’s about it.

    • Reply

Not completely. There’s new synth sections added. Their going for Genesis sounding remixes that also sound new for classic Sonic while modern gets a revamp. PRetty awesome concept when you think about it.

I agree. I LOVED the Green Hill remake; maybe I just don’t like Chemical Plant’s music all that much.

yknow this means that you just need the original Sonic 1, 2, 3 and knuckles OSTs put some extra instrumentals in them and u have generations soundtrack. Good luck though

Also who saw the pic of ray and Mighty at the end?

      That is pretty weird.

    • Reply

Has someone done that for Green Hill as well? I almost lost Sonic a couple times in the demo because he’s so tiny.

    • Reply

Yeah. Playing the demo, the first thing I thought was, “Why is the world enormous?”

    • Reply

The grabbers are so huge compared to Sonic…

    This looks really cool.
But…Since when did Sonic become emotionless? His voice seems really flat. And What’s this about European dubs?

    • Reply

That “emotionless” and “flat” voice IS his European dub

The VO from Colors hasn’t changed (in America)

I saw Red Rings hidden in the levels as they were in Sonic Colors. Does this suggest that Super Sonic will appear in this game’s levels aswell?

    • Reply

Can’t say with 100% certainty because plans always change, but seeing as their models were found and there’s an icon for seven chaos emeralds, chances are looking very good.

But it’s just a video game, Sonic Generations looks and plays fun. So who really cares if Sonic needs boost pads or doesn’t roll right? That’s why the scripted ramps are their for! I don’t know that’s just me. I say Sonic Generations is fun and that’s the bottom line cuz Stone Cold said so! *Laughs*

They DID say other characters were gonna be in the game. But we’re not being forced to play as them (unless a particular rumor is true, if that’s the case, a lot of Knuckles fans are gonna be pretty happy)

  • Reply

It seems like with the Sequence SEGA is going through here, there’s also going to be a level or two from the Sonic 3 and Knuckles(Which would be Awesome) , I could be the Carnival Night Zone or Hydro City Zone.

    • Reply

Actually, the rumors are possibly true that Sky Sanctuary is going to represent Sonic 3. Don’t know why because it wasn’t that popular…

      • Reply

I think he meant that there would be a level representing Sonic 3 (my personal pick is Ice Cap Zone) and a level for Sonic and Knuckles (the aforementioned Sky Sanctuary)

Are the voice changes part of some new international law for gaming or something? An internet friend of mine said that in Quebec games had to start being translated into french, which is very interesting.
