Elemental Shields: How Do They Work?

Decent, apparently. Locked away (poorly, once again) in the Sonic Generations demo is, you guessed it, power-ups. Power-ups that haven’t been seen in what feels like ages. The lightning, fire and water shields bring back the double jumping, bouncing and air dashing insanity originally introduced in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and we’ve got a video of them in action.

I get this strange vibe that Classic Sonic with the fire shield is how the designers want the game to play all the time.

Thanks again to PolygonJim for his sorcery. Buy the man a reasonably priced donut next time you see him.

    OMG!!! Hype Zone 1 CLEAR!

While I find this to be an incredible piece of news. I hope they bother animating those shields at some point. 😛 You know, the bubble deforming a bit because of the force? Still, great news! 🙂

I liked all of the bubble shields haha, gives the levels more replay value! The fire one i really couldnt see the boost that well ,due to the jittering screen, but i hope they add that part where when you boost with the fire, thge fire covers the whole bubble. 🙂

I have the same feeling about the missing animations. I do hope they add those. The shields from 15-plus years ago should have no reason to look superior to the shields of today.

I guess Sonic Team should fix the bubble shield. Sonic is floating too high.

The shields work through the power of Love. Come on, you knew that.

Shame the flame shield looks so lazy compared to its original counterpart. Doing its mid-air move sould make him turn into a fireball temporarily instead of just… nothing.
Hell, the shield should literally look like flames instead of a sphere with a little red aura.

Ah. So glad they decided to bring the elemental shields back and judging by the lack of animation they’re not finished so they’ll probably undergo a few changes (like fixing the moon-like physics on the bubble shield)
Anyways, can’t wait to try it out for myself in November.

Elemental shields from Sonic 3&K are back? YES! 😀

it would seem to me they left that stuff in there on purpose for all the sonic hackers to find.
Otherwise they wouldn’t have added it in at all.

For me though the Demo tells me to stay away from the title.
Maybe they’ll fix it up by release.. maybe give it a rental.

Also I bet the shield graphics weren’t finished yet no doubt.
I’d at least expect those to look nicer by the time its released.
Providing they didn’t cut the shields all together. Which the demo would have me believe. Unless theres one hidden some hard to find place.

Hah! Elemental shields are back. From complete banishment to complete love of them, I think they will come back complete in the final. hopefully they fix the glitchy physics and graphics. I think this will work.

Sega probably locked them because they weren’t done animating them yet. Still great to see this 😀 I didn’t know the shields would be back.

My question is, will modern Sonic get to use these shields?

    • Reply

From the looks of it, nope.

he might but i doubt he would get a new move they might just protect him from thier respective hazards

im going to buy polygon jim a box filled with reasonably priced donuts after letting us see this. Ah, nostalgia done right feels better than something trying to be nostalgic and failing

Hey SEGA, get your modern pitfalls out of my classics, thanks.

The jumping sounds in the bubble shields are repetitive and the fire sheild just looks like the normal sheild.. THIS IS POOR!!

Is it my impression or people here are complaining about something HACKED (and that means, probably unfinished)???

*remembers everyone already complaining about the uncurling hill before*…

Keep these coming…. and I hope some one finds cutscenes and more info on the 3DS

It’s nice to see those “extra” shields come back since I loved to use them in Sonic3&K.

Especially the fire shield was my favorite but also the water shield since it saved your butt when going underwater 😀

Just wondering if we can still use them in the modern stages 😮

we can only hope the bubble provides the same advantage this time around.

I think with each new game and with each new attempt, they get a little closer to whats right. Its not quite there yet but almost. Happy to see the lightning shield is back!
