So, I heard some of you are a fan of this one game, Sonic Adventure 2. It’s a pretty great game, I must admit. Most people who have played are familiar with the very first stage, City Escape. The very first part has this little part where you do a bit of downhill “skateboarding.” Pretty fun, right?
Now imagine a game based on that, because that’s precisely what Sonic Team was working on at one point in time.
Sonic Extreme is a game recently discovered on a development unit for the original Xbox console that appears to be based off the Sonic Adventure 2 engine, possibly between the time of SA2 and Sonic Heroes, and features Sonic skateboarding around in an area reminiscent of Heroes‘s Seaside Hill. Additionally, there appears to be a battle mode with Sonic and Shadow built in the same split-screen style as Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. More videos after the cut.
We are working on obtaining as much information as we can about this unreleased game and will be delivering more news on the situation promptly. Stay tuned.

The engine looks like it functions extremely closely to the old Tony Hawk engines.

Looks kind of like some Tony Hawk rip-off…
I’m guessing this is what became Riders…

You know, this is hardly surprising to see when you look at the time context.
At the time, Tony Hawk’s line of games were mad popular, if already starting to decline. The whole skateboard craze was in full force, Rocket Power was on the air…
So of course Sega would dick around with the idea of making a Sonic Skateboarding game, especially the already skater feel they were trying to give Sonic in SA2. Nevermind that around that time, a certain more mature franchise attempted its own skateboard knockoff, albeit not in a full game.

I like how that still manages to look and sound ten times better.

well this stinks I was hoping for info on the cancelled Sonic Xtreme game and not a Tony Hawk rip-off hack.

Skateboard games weren’t really in full force around 2003/2004, which is when this game seems have been done- those games were more 2000-2002ish. That’s probably why development didn’t go any further, and also due to the fact that it’s not cool enough to JUST be Sonic on a normal skateboard.
If you look at the scenery, it’s really similar to Seaside Hill, and of course, Green Hill Zone, especially those boxes. Looks as though they were planning a revival of Sonic which didn’t really go ahead until lately. Also, Sonic has his Sonic Heroes voice acting, which is 99% of the time recorded in the later half of development, and Heroes was pretty much done by mid 2003.

awesome luckily i still got my modded Xbox, i’d love to try out this baby one day!
i’m sure if the title stayed “Sonic Extreme” people would mix a lot between this and teh unreleased Saturn game “Sonic Xtreme”, in a way both games use the same title and both were canceled =p

Maybe it’s just the way the video looks, but the graphics for this game look better then Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Heroes. It’s a shame they didn’t release this, I know not many people took to Riders, but if they made Sonic a little faster and had some kind of stat system like the THPS games, I’m sure loads of people would have bought this. Can you imagine “Create a Skatepark” in a Sonic game? Green Hill Zone parks everywhere.

Well technically, it’s “Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme.” We should probably stick with that for simplicity’s sake.

Am I really the only one finding it ironic that another Sonic-game involving the name ‘Extreme’ was axed as well? =P
By the way, I hear a song from Sonic Adventure 2 in the beginning of the second video.

So Shadow was decided to stay in the franchise before the development of Sonic Heroes. …. Great.

Guys, you probably can’t tell, but this is just a modification of Rocket Power beach bandits.

Anyone notice that Shadow is not using the Shadow voice from SA2, but rather the Sonic Voice from SA2? I think that they hadn’t completely finished Shadow besides being a reskin of Sonic. All things considered, this does look rather nice and I would have loved to see it released.
