Sonic Teaser Video Shows… Classic Sonic?

Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic team up in the next Sonic game.

At 9 a.m. EST, Sega showed off the 50-second teaser video on their Sonic The Hedgehog fanpage on Facebook, offering that it’s a teaser of the next major Sonic title. [UPDATE: Video after the jump. Thanks, Twimfy!]

The footage begins with the green-eyed modern Sonic running along through a very white, lightly textured version of Green Hill Zone in 3D, going through pipes and shuttle loops until flying through the air and being joined by his classic chubby companion.

The two then run along side by side and we’re treated to a loose release date of “Coming 2011” and confirmation that the game will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, including online support in some capacity.

Although it does not confirm a title, it’s very likely to hold the name Sonic Generations, especially with how recently the domains were registered. Did your guess on our poll from last night come true?

They skipped over a 360/PS3 main sonic title last year so I assume they have been working on this game forever now. Hopefully that means they have put a lot of time into it. Hoping for the best, so far so good…

Sega shows us another vague trailer promising in each of our unique minds a different product which they can’t possibly deliver. Mario 64 came out in 1996. I’m still waiting for Sega’s proper response. Could this be Classic Sonic in 3D as it should be, with properly built levels where you can explore the whole thing and not run into invisible walls when you try to go back for more rings, or just to play around with the environment? I’ll give it a 0.1994% chance because I’ve been burned too any times. 99.8006% chance they sloppily throw classic sonic into the Colors Engine taking away his spindash and jump attack, subtract the wisp things, and build a few crap levels to slide around in. Expectations can’t be lower for me, but somehow they will dig below where I’m at so they can lower the bar for next time.

  • Reply

So they finally went the extra mile with the fan requests? Wasn’t too impressed in the beginning, but having classic Sonic run alongside Modern Sonic was a bit unexpected. Awesome job, Sega. 🙂

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/1853/oldeyelids.png they even gave classic sonic the right eye lid color! nice attention to detail, still it will never deliver on this promis, but its cool enough for me to keep tabs on it, because who am I kidding

Hmm, Interesting… From what I have seen and heard it looks like we will play stages like Green Hill, Chemical plant, Ice Cap, Sandpolis. In a Sonic Unleashed day style. In other words something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ycymywGv7c

And stages like Emerald Coast, Pumpkin Hill, Rail Canyon, Spagonia. In a Classic Sonic way. In other words something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZPUY3sTKzU

This is of course only my take on it.

  • Reply

This is a new kind of bs.

Don’t get me wrong, this was completely unexpected, but it’s quite a face heel turn for Sega to be ignoring the Classic Sonic design for many years – even branding retro compilations with Modern Sonic’s silly mug – and teasing us with the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 silhouette with what turned out to be Modern Sonic. Sega’s gone out of their way to ignore the original Sonic in their series since Sonic Adventure, and suddenly he shows up? It almost seems as if this was done to please all the people who wanted Classic Sonic in Sonic 4. On top of that, there is now no excuse why Sonic 4 doesn’t include Classic Sonic (other than the fact they KNEW it wouldn’t live up to the classic series).

So what IS this game? Will it include time travel? Is it going to be the official “missing bridge” between classic and modern? My only hope for this game is that it’ll establish Classic Sonic as a disconnected continuity far removed from Modern Sonic. But watch this – y’know what happened with Turtles Forever, with the 80’s Turtles being extremely exaggerated and the whole thing ended up being a disappointment as a result? I predict the same would happen here. They’re going to make Modern Sonic look good in comparison. Plus, Classic Sonic with a voice. It’ll happen.

In conclusion, Sega: Great Troll or Greatest Troll?

    • Reply

      Shut up, narrator.

Your turtles comparison is ironic, considering the juxtaposition between what is and isn’t “classic” TMNT.

Tch… I say fuck the Wii. I’m GLAD they are sticking to a PS3 and 360 exclusive title. We can have a great Sonic game with astounding GRAPHICS now since they don’t have to keep limitations on looks due to the Wii’s shitty graphic compacity… Look at how they had to tone down Unleashed on Wii and give it the same resembling graphics as the PS2 version. I say EXCELLENT choice SEGA!!! PLEASE NO WII VERISON!!! Give us those badass graphics!!!

    • Reply

Hey, while I can see why we should be happy about this not having a Wii version, f***ing the Wii is essentially modern f***ing the Master System of 90s. Let it have its games.

    • Reply

Yeah, Sega worked out good pushing the limitations on the Wii. Sonic Colors got really positive criticism on the graphics. If SEGA want money, Wii and 3ds is the platform to work on.

    • Reply

lol @ graphics being this HUGE factor… in my day…

      • Reply

In your days people were even more obnoxious about graphics, remember Blast Processing? Hell, the entire 8, 16 and 32 bit wars were graphical dick size contests between the different companies involved.

        • Reply

lol. you know what, you’re absolutely right. but in the end, graphics weren’t an illusion of great game play like they are now.

    • Reply

Unleashed on Wii/PS2 was a completely different game from Unleashed on 360/PS3. Plus, ’06 had no Wii version. You complaints are invalid.

    • Reply

I think you could get more sales if you distribute the game evenly. Also, graphics don’t always make a game. It’s the gameplay and presentation that does. Mario Kart DS, Sonic Colors on both consoles, and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing tend to be good examples on such, well, not the last one as much. Also, didn’t Unleashed get higher reviews on the Wii than on the 360 and PS3? Also, Sonic ’06. That is all.

      • Reply

lol i like how when colors was ONLY on wii and DS. Wii and DS owners were like HA! sucks for you. BUT NOW that it’s the other way around their being all cry baby about it. really? if anything i say this evens it out. HD gamers deserve some love too.

I’m not exactly bitching about it. It’s just a shame such a title like this is going to the big boys, if you catch my drift. Honestly, I’ve been saving money to get a 360, and now’s my excuse to get it just for this and Mortal Kombat! 8D

The problem with Sonic 4 was not the lack of classic Sonic. Looks good, but I remain skeptical until we get any details.

    • Reply

While it’s true the lack of classic sonic wasn’t the main problem, the exclusion of him showed sega didn’t care about this game and they were going to half-ass it. And they did. here, Classic Sonic looks really good, he has all the small details and he’s even pumping his arms rather than letting them flap behind him, sure sign that Sega care about this game. :]

      • Reply

It doesn’t mean they care, it just means that they decided to drop the rather stubborn stance of sticking exclusively with the “modern” look as echoed by Takashi Iizuka.

        • Reply

Right. I am just seeing alot more effort in this one trailer. since the sonic 4 trailer reflected the whole game (sloppy, disappointing) I am hoping this one reflects on the trailer too. The classic design is a good sign.

^ Did you actually play Sonic Colours? I’m guessing you didn’t. The Wii is perfectly capable of awsome graphics without much of a compromise. Games like Call of Duty JUST scrape it, but Sonic Colours looked and felt amazing. Also; swearing, don’t fucking do it.

Anyway, I’m anticipating this. This just made me orgasm, though I don’t see why some of you are commenting on how good this game looks already- that was a CGI cutscene, about 30 seconds long, with no indication whatsoever what the game will be like. Hell, don’t even expect ‘classic Sonic’ in any playable form, it’s likely- as the rumours have gone of the last couples of months- that it’ll be classic Sonic levels to play through.

    • Reply

Colors has cool graphic, but it’s still too far away from Unleashed. One of the biggest issue is its low frame rate of 30 per second (While HD Unleashed has 60 frames per second, despite that the PS3 version’s fps isn’t too steady in latter levels.
It’s obviously not a good idea for Sega to lower the graphic of the 20th anniversary game because of Wii. Come on, an HD console is not that expensive in this days. I am glad they keep it in just HD consoles and didn’t make it a multi-platform like Sonic 4, Sonic Team surely don’t want to sacrifice the quality of the anniversary game just for a little bit better marketing. They may have realized that the brand value of Sonic the Hedgehog is a lot more important than short term sales in a single game.

    • Reply

There’s another reason for Wii isn’t capable for the new Sonic game aside graphic is the volume of the Wii Disc. 4.8 Gb is obviously too small for a Sonic game. A lot of people complain that Colors has too less 3D gameplays and too many automated sections, the small disc memory is all to blame.

      • Reply

Wii’s discs have the same capacity as a standard DVD (the 4.8 is single-layer; dual-layer is, well, double). When you factor in the fact that graphics don’t need to be as detailed, you come across the potential for there to be more content per disc as compared to the Xbox 360, whose standard DVDs are currently utilizing less space than they could due to Microsoft’s security format.

And your last sentence makes zero sense in any event.

      • Reply

I’m sure the Wii hold 4.7GB on a regular regular disc, and 8.5 GB on a dual dual layer disc.

In contrast, Xbox 360 the same amount of space with a singe or dual layer.

        How does this change anything?

      • Reply

Actually, the Wii has the same maximum disk space as the 360 (4.7 Gb if single layered and roughly 8.5 Gb dual layered.) So if the Wii doesn’t have enough disk space for sonic, neither does the 360.

Yeah….it sounds like an awesome idea, but knowing Sega, they are probably going to royally and epically mess this up. I’m not going to lie; I’ve kinda lost confidence in Sega making a decent Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2 and maybe Heroes. (Excluding the 2D portable games and RPG)) Look at Sonic ’06. It was supposed to be the bomb, and we all know how that turned out. I’m not holding my breath, but I am hoping for the best. Maybe (and hopefully) Sega will prove me wrong. Only one way to find out…

I agree that the downfall of sonic was SA2, Cause SA1 was awesome :-). For one thing, SEGA better not mess this up! It’s one thing to mess a game up with current Sonic, But when you mess a game with Classic Sonic up, you’ve gone to far!

P.S. Mr. Lolspeak wants to say something. WHY NO HAS WHEEL FEET!?

      • Reply

Sonic Adventure 2 had great gameplay for the Sonic\Shadow and Mech levels, but where it dropped the ball was the dang Knuckles\Rouge stages. They were so tedious and boring that they ruined the whole game for me. I’d be going on a good roll, playing for about ten minutes or so getting pumped up into the game, and then bam; it would hit you with one of those fetch quests, and another twenty minutes or so you were so out of the game you just hit the power button on the Dreamcast. A real shame. It would have been almost perfect if it wasn’t for those dang emerald levels. There were some cheap deaths too, but you had unlimited continues so it wasn’t that bad. The camera needed work too. But I could deal with all of that if I hadn’t had to play the fetch quest levels.

        • Reply

Yeeeaaaah….SA had those “fetch quest” levels too, and they were not only mandatory if you wanted to complete the game fully, but they got you to do them continuously in a row. (Assuming that you played each story straight through instead of taking a break from one story and switch to another) though with SA2, they switched it up so you didn’t get bored doing the same thing over and over again in a row like with SA. (unless again, you MANUALLY switched it up in SA.) Also, SA2 is a bit better than SA IMO because it didn’t have Amy & Big stages slowing you down to a grinding, smoldering halt.

        • Reply

You took 20 minutes on a single Knux/Rouge level?

Dude, just read all the clues every time and be done with it. besides the space level, all levels are rather small, and knux’ space level was corridor to boot!

        • Reply

I think the fetch quests in the whole series should have been scrapped, but I like the way the implemented it in SA1. It just seemed to play better to me. But I do like the flow of action (just going straight to the levels) in SA2. I always found it a pain and cryptic to figure out where you’re supposed to go in SA, since you had to go all around the adventure fields. Yeah, I am pretty embarrassed it takes me 20min or more on the first try. I just don’t really like the search quest in SA2 as I did in SA1. But I do have to agree the Amy and Big levels are not that great though. I guess I’m just used to 2D Sonic on the MegaDrive\Genesis.

My guess for gameplay, you run around as either-or and you hit a past/future gate that, like in CD but instead, switches Sonic’s generation. Classic has gameplay built around spindashing (maybe super peel-out) and precision jumping, while Modern has gameplay built around holding the boost button and homing attack.

Sounds like a decent idea, that way all we need is a gecko code that prevents switching from Classic Sonic.

      • Reply

It COULD be a choice, and if it is then your idea is redundant. But I’d laugh if Sega made it so that you couldn’t complete the entire game without having to switch into the other at least once in a stage – the two could possibly differ in abilities, for example. Then you’d need a few extra codes to get Classic Sonic to be able to complete the New Sonic sections…

    This game sounds EPIC.

That doesn’t make any sense. I wouldn’t be surprised at a Sonic game being put out on the Wii. But if they’re not saying this game is on the Wii for this trailer, unless they change their mind and hastily port it…how does chargers with Sonic’s face on them imply anything. Wallets have Sonic’s face on them. Does that mean U.S. currency will now feature him?

My hope is that this will play somewhat how Mega Man Universe was supposed to work- Being able to play as current-style Sonic or classic Sonic in the same levels. I’d be real excited if you could play 3D stages as next-gen Sonic and 2D stages as classic Sonic. I’m a bit upset that it isn’t saying if there’s a Wii version, because, somehow, it’s the only home console I’ve got.

Well IMO, classic sonic might just be there to symbolize Sonic going back to his roots (level wise) and could not even be there in game.. but I could be wrong and we could have another good Sonic game coming up!

Funny how people say that Sonic fans are impossible to please, and all they had to do to make them like this game was put Classic Sonic in the trailer.
It’s impossible to tell whether the physics will be improved in this game or not, but considering that they listened to complaints about Sonic’s model, I’m hoping that they’ll listen to our complaints about the gameplay.

Have you seen some of the replies here?

This is exactly what people have wanted yet others STILL COMPLAIN. Sonic fans are the worst. period.

Every fanbase is like this. You just can’t please everyone.

In the teaser, Blackeyes’ arms swing from side to side. Classic Sonic’s fists remained in a static position in front of him while he was running.

    BAWWWWW SWINGING ARMS

And where’s the wheel of feet? YOU’VE SCREWED UP CLASSIC SONIC ALREADY, SEGA.

Maybe they didn’t screw it up. It’s just a trailer.

Plus, if he didn’t have spinny feet in-game, then I’d want this animation.

Just thought. In the trailer at the end classic Sonic and Modern are shown speeding up. Maybe spinny feet would have come after, but we just couldn’t see it.

        (sorry for double post)

The wheel of feet, it’s meant to be a representation (yes, hate me now nostalgiafags) of his feet moving up and doing it fast.
Heck, it might not even be the actual FULL SPEED of Sonic (hence the swinging arms)

I just noticed. What if you have to fight Eggman AND Robotnik? That would be absolutely EPIC!

Sonic Peel Out better be back! XD

Meh, I like the idea, but it doesn’t really matter. Official HD remake Sonic 1 – 3 ( & Knuckles ) Or remake favorite stages and I’m sold.

I hope they add classic robotnik in too… 🙂

Yes! I can’t wait for this!

I’m pretty upset to see that theres no Wii or DS title coming out. I remember reading somewhere that SEGA’s best sales come from Nintendo’s consoles. Plus, theres also the new 3DS thats getting pretty popular. If SEGA really wanted to appeal to the fans, they’d put this on Wii, at the least. I hope to see some more of this at E3 soon! 😀

Wait sorry this is bad because classic sonic’s eyebrows are too big.

No Sonic Adventure 3? Oh well…

And thus, the fanbase proves its tendency to argue again…

Here’s to hoping this game will be good. Classic Sonic in 3D is pretty awesome. Knowing SEGA they’ll find a way to screw it up.
