Add one more to the number of ports this game has.
While people enrolled in PlayStation Plus have had the game (for free) for over a month, the game has now been deemed worthy of release to the lowly free peons of the PSN in exchange for $4.99 out of your PlayStation Wallet.
What will you find? Just Sonic 1 as you remember it, only now with a new menu system that prevents using the level select code but allows for savestates to be made at the player’s leisure.
In other words, it’s a port of the Xbox Live Arcade “Sega Vintage Collection” port of Sonic 1, with all the pluses and minuses (moreso minuses) well intact.
If you’re visiting this site, you’ve likely played this game in some sort of capacity. This one’s purely for the diehards who want Sonic 1 on every system they own (legally) or for those who somehow missed on the multiple other ports of the game. May I suggest just picking Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection instead?

Oh look, is that 2xSAI (or similar) up-scaling I see there?
And there is no other way to really experience Sonic 1 other than on an actual Genesis and an old TV.

Yup, it's an optional feature in the PS3/Xbox 360 ports.

Forgot to mention the awesome trophies…

What SEGA should have done is made the US PS3 version’s level select code the Japanese level select code and vice versa. Then everyone would assume that it’s a direct 360 port and no one would figure it out for 5 years.

Why do you consider this version to be bad? WHich are the minuses? I mean, the image looks good, probably the best of the sonic ports released.

Mostly the shoddy emulation behind it. It likes to chug every now and then, controls sometimes don't respond, and there's the usual problem with audio.
I wasn't expecting perfection on either version of the port, but at least to be good. Still, it's better than the GBA port by far!

There's no level select code. That's why it's bad.

If there’s no code then it’s not good enough to be Sonic.

If you have PSPlus, download it, play through it once to grab a few free trophies. Then delete the turd.

Oh no you mean you actually have to be GOOD at this one? Seriously guys you can’t cheat so it’s bad? I’ve had it for two days now and I’ve already got all the trophies. It’s really a rather good port tbh. Though there are a few bugs (all of which are more noticeable and problematic than a little control mishap and slightly-out audio but it’s still a very fun little game that costs less than most of the games on there anyway. Value for money it’s still better than most of the PSN games on there.

"Oh no you mean you actually have to be GOOD at this one? Seriously guys you can’t cheat so it’s bad? "
Uh... most if not all of us have beaten the game without cheats, with all the emeralds countless times.... the point is the un-necessary crippling.

I didn;t liek this port. only because them music was wasn’t ported at 100. I dont give a damn about level select. *Will stick to Sonic’s ultimate Genesis Collection*

Actually, this is kinda weird that they haven’t done this before (although it IS the 20th anniversery, and all I did was this for a comic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxD3yvd8qbI ).

Is it me or does it look like one of those HD Genesis filters have been applied?

No, that's exactly what it is. It can be disabled, though.
