New 2D Sonic Game Announced for 2010

SEGA has come out of left field with an announcement that has rocked the supersecretsonic2010_56297_screenboat among fans of Sonic everywhere–the announcement that a brand new, 2D Sonic game is slated for release at some point in the year 2010 for what is assumedly one of the “modern” gaming platforms of our generation.

Code-named “Project Needlemouse”–a reference to the original name for the Sonic character, Mr. Needlemouse–SEGA aims to please “old-school Sonic fans” who “have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay” according to an interview between GameSpot and Sega associate brand manager, Ken Balough. According to Balough, the game is also slated to contain HD graphics, likely in a similar reign to Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix or even our own Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD project.

The full interview between GameSpot and Balough is available here, while the original GameSpot article–complete with teaser trailer–is available here.

As of yet, very little information has been revealed regarding this release, but we fully expect that SEGA has a lot to live up to, given the expectations of most scrutinous critics of the Sonic franchise as of late. The trailer slates the release of the game for the year 2010, flaunting speed as one of the core points of appeal for the upcoming title.

Will SEGA be able to live up to the hype? Given recent trends, that doesn’t seem likely; it’s always nice to keep an open mind, though!

    Oh my, this is exciting!

I hope they go with a two dimensional, anime-like front end with three dimensional backdrops such as those seen in many of the beat-em-ups of the early 2000’s.

If they were to go purely two dimensional in the style of say, the Sonic Advance titles, that would also be great.

As always I look forward to the music also, less lyrical levels would be great.

But please, don’t introduce more hedgehogs, cats or llamas to the already ridiculous character portfolio.

Let’s hope it lives up the hype, it’s about time they listened to the fans. As for playable characters, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are quite enough, although I suspect Amy and/or Shadow will also be included to avoid being too similar to Sonic 3. Nice one Sega!

They should make the character sprites the same as Sonic 3’s, I hope they get this right.

SEGA is going to pick it up where the Sonic 2 HD project left? ;)

I sure hope they are going to pick up the old story line on Sonic 3 + Sonic and Knuckles. The Sonic 1 2 3 and knuckles games are THE best games EVER.

Sonic Advance style isn’t anywhere near good enough. It needs to recapture the feel of the original three sonic games.

I hope they can manage this, but who knows.
If this game really does bring back the true Sonic, I’d probably buy an xb360/ps3/whatever just to play it.

This sounds awesome. For years sega have let down fans with dissapointing games and now we can hope that this will be amazing like the best games ever the sonic titles on the megadrive (genesis)

Sonic in 3D was ok but it never could match up aginst S3&K!!!
    I truly hope
Sega gets it right this time and that instead of amy and shadow we get the freedom fighters form the saterday AM series as well as the Chaotix and knuckles, and of corse sonic it wouldnt be the same with out him what would be nice would be if they have it continue after the end of S3&k kinda like Sonic XG did that would be great. one thing I think they need more bosses like Enerjak mamoth mougil and doc. fintivus it would be nice to even see nack the weasel in there.
